Close a game or app on PS5
- Press the PS button on your controller to open the control centre.
- Select Switcher. It shows recently started games and apps.
- Highlight the game or app you want to close, then select the on-screen close command. Follow the prompt displayed for the selected item; the exact prompt can vary by interface context or software version.
PlayStation describes Switcher as the control-centre feature for switching between recently started games and apps or closing a game: PlayStation Support: customise the PS5 control centre.
Close, Rest Mode, or turn off the PS5?
These actions have different outcomes. Use Switcher to close a selected game or app. Rest Mode puts the console into a low-power state and can keep a game or app suspended. Turning off the PS5 shuts the console down completely.

How to enter Rest Mode or fully shut down
Enter Rest Mode
- Press the PS button to open the control centre.
- Select Power > Enter Rest Mode.
The indicator turns orange in Rest Mode. A suspended game or app is not the same as a closed one.
Turn off the PS5 completely
- Press the PS button to open the control centre.
- Select Power > Turn Off PS5.
- Wait for the power indicator to stop blinking and turn off.
The indicator is white while the console is on, orange in Rest Mode, and off when the console is shut down. Labels can vary with localization or software version.

Do not unplug the PS5 while its indicator is on
Do not disconnect the AC power cord while the power indicator is lit or blinking. Sony warns that disconnecting it at that point could cause data loss or corruption and may damage the console. Wait until the indicator is off before disconnecting power. See Sony’s PS5 support guidance and its PS5 Quick Start Guide for model group CFI-71XX.
