For the highest sustained XP rate, build a guardian farm; an enderman farm is usually nearly as fast and simpler once you can reach the End. Before that point, use a dungeon spawner, a furnace-based smelter, or Nether quartz mining. Your edition, game version, farm design, and whether kills are credited to a player all change the result, so published “levels per hour” figures are estimates rather than guarantees.

How Minecraft XP actually works
Experience appears as green orbs. You collect an orb by moving close enough for it to home toward you; it then fills the progress bar for your current level. A farm can produce many items without producing XP if the final kill or block break is not credited in a way that awards experience.

When a mob drops XP
- Most mobs award orbs when killed directly by a player or by a tamed wolf.
- Fall damage, fire, entity cramming, suffocation, and other fully automatic deaths generally do not award the player XP. Farms therefore leave mobs one hit from death, use a trident or another player-crediting mechanism where supported, or provide a manual kill chamber.
- Hostile mobs normally drop more XP than passive mobs. Baby animals, bats, iron or snow golems, and villagers give no XP when killed.
Why large farms can hit a collection bottleneck
Third-party guides commonly cite a practical absorption limit of about 10 XP orbs per second. That is not a universal per-hour cap: orb size, entity spacing, collection geometry, simulation distance, and edition all matter. Guardians are valuable partly because guides describe their drops as larger orbs (one documented breakdown is two orbs worth 7 and 3 XP, for about 10 XP per guardian), while an enderman is commonly listed at about 5 XP, split into smaller orbs. A crowded kill chamber can therefore make a guardian farm produce more usable XP per second than a farm with the same number of kills.
Levels are not the same as XP points
The number of points needed rises as your level increases. “Level 30 in seconds” claims from old videos cannot be applied to every version or design. Compare farms by the XP they reliably deliver and by how quickly they refill the level range you actually use, rather than by one headline level figure.
#1 Best Overall
Fastest XP methods compared
| Method | Practical speed | Progression requirement | Build effort | Extra output | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Guardian farm | Community guides generally rank it highest for sustained XP | Ocean monument, strong gear, and a large building project | Very high | Prismarine materials, shards, crystals, fish | Rates vary sharply by design, edition, monument preparation, and simulation settings; do not treat unsupported figures such as 180,000 XP/hour as established. |
| Enderman farm | Often described as nearly as fast as a guardian farm | Defeat the Ender Dragon and reach the End | Medium | Ender pearls | Platform location, spawning rules, and edition change the result. |
| Gold/zombified-piglin farm | Mid-to-late-game high output | Nether access and a design that keeps piglins spawning | High | Gold and rotten flesh | A guide’s claim that a good design can reach level 100 in roughly one hour is design-specific, not a guaranteed rate. |
| Dungeon spawner farm | Reliable early and mid-game XP | Find a zombie or skeleton spawner | Low to medium | Arrows, bones, armor, or other mob drops | Keep the player within the spawner’s activation range and finish kills in a player-crediting chamber. |
| Furnace or smelter bank | Slow, passive XP while items cook | Fuel, hoppers, and a renewable crop or kelp supply | Low to medium | Cooked food, glass, dried kelp, or other smelted items | A Minecraft Wiki farming-tutorial summary lists about 360 XP per real-time hour for one cactus furnace under its stated assumptions; crop and edition rates differ. |
| Nether quartz mining | Very fast burst when first entering the Nether | Nether access and equipment for dangerous terrain | None | Quartz for redstone and building | One guide reports 3–4 levels in minutes at Y=15; treat that as a single-guide observation, not a fixed yield. |
| Sculk breaking | Situational burst in an Ancient City | Deep Dark access and careful exploration | Low infrastructure, high danger | Sculk blocks, sensors, and shriekers | Summaries of the Minecraft Wiki tutorial list 1 XP for a sculk block and 5 XP for a sculk sensor or shrieker. |
Pick a method for your stage of the game
Before you have Nether or End access
Use a nearby zombie or skeleton spawner if you can find one. It gives repeatable XP without a dimension-scale construction project. A furnace bank is useful alongside it because it stores XP until you remove the finished items, letting you convert a crop surplus into a small reserve while you work.
After entering the Nether
Quartz is the fastest no-build option for a short session. For repeatable output, consider a gold farm once you have safe Nether transport, fire resistance, and the materials to build a large spawning platform.

An enderman farm is usually the best balance of construction time and output. A guardian farm can surpass it in sustained production, but monument preparation and spawn-proofing make it a much larger commitment.
When you need passive XP rather than maximum speed
Automated furnaces continue processing while you gather resources. They are not a substitute for a mob farm when you need many levels quickly, but they are convenient for mending equipment and collecting XP during ordinary smelting.
Guardian farms: the highest reported sustained rate
Community guides consistently place guardian farms at or near the top because guardians spawn around ocean monuments and provide comparatively large XP drops. The exact output depends on the edition, version, monument handling, spawn-proofing, kill method, and how efficiently the player collects orbs.
What you need
- An ocean monument and a way to travel safely through an ocean biome.
- Strong armor, a water-breathing plan, mining tools, and blocks for temporary structures.
- Building materials for a spawning area, water channels, a kill chamber, item storage, and an AFK platform.
- A kill system that awards XP to the player. A fully automatic fall or lava kill can produce drops without producing the XP you expect.
Build sequence
- Mark the monument and establish a safe access route. Keep a bed and spare equipment on land rather than inside the danger zone.
- Choose a design for your edition and version. Guides disagree on whether the monument must be completely drained; follow the tested requirements of the design you are using instead of assuming draining is mandatory.
- Construct the spawning volume and route guardians into a compact chamber. Remove nearby competing spawn spaces when the design requires it.
- Separate item collection from the player’s standing position. Hoppers, water streams, and storage should not force you into the damage area.
- Finish guardians manually, with a player-crediting weapon, or through the design’s supported trident mechanism. Verify XP drops before decorating or expanding the farm.
- Run a short test from the intended AFK location. Check that guardians spawn, reach the chamber, die in the credited way, and that orbs reach you rather than stopping in walls or water.
Why advertised rates vary
There is no single guardian-farm rate that applies to every world. Simulation distance can limit spawning; nearby caves or ocean spaces can absorb the mob cap; Java and Bedrock use different mechanics; and a player standing too far away can stop the relevant chunks from ticking. Treat “fastest” as a ranking of farm types, not a promise of a particular number of levels per hour.

Enderman farms require access to the End but generally avoid the monument-scale excavation of a guardian build. Community guides describe them as nearly as fast as guardian farms when the platform is placed and spawn-proofed correctly.
Construction checklist
- Locate a suitable area in the End and build the farm where surrounding spawnable spaces are minimized or controlled.
- Use a platform and lure or funnel that moves endermen toward a safe drop or kill chamber.
- Set the fall height or damage system so endermen survive until you deliver the final hit, unless your edition’s supported mechanism explicitly preserves player XP credit.
- Place the collection point close enough that orbs do not scatter, while keeping the player safe from teleporting endermen.
- Carry a carved pumpkin only if its reduced visibility is acceptable; otherwise use a roof, trapdoors, or a one-block attack opening to prevent eye contact.
Common reasons an enderman farm feels slow
The platform may be competing with the main island, the player may be outside the farm’s effective spawning range, or the kill chamber may be killing endermen without player credit. Endermen can also teleport onto nearby blocks. Remove unintended surfaces, use the spacing required by the design, and test XP collection before adding storage or cosmetic blocks.

Gold and zombified-piglin farms
Gold farms combine XP with a valuable resource, making them attractive after you have reliable Nether infrastructure. Designs differ widely: some use a Nether roof, some use a portal system, and some rely on a large spawning platform. Edition-specific mob behavior means a Java design cannot be assumed to work on Bedrock.
Build and safety priorities
- Secure the route to the farm with fire-resistant materials and a recovery path. A death in the Nether can erase the equipment needed to finish the project.
- Use the spawning and entity-count requirements for your exact design. Overlapping portals, nearby Nether terrain, or an incorrect AFK height can reduce output.
- Separate gold-item collection from the XP standing area. Test that piglins die only after the player receives credit.
- Keep a way to stop the farm. A jammed kill chamber or excessive entity buildup can cause lag and make recovery dangerous.
One community guide says a good design can reach level 100 in approximately one hour. That is a single-guide estimate under particular conditions, not a universal benchmark; use it to judge the potential of the method, not to plan an exact leveling schedule.
Spawner farms: the dependable early-game answer
A zombie or skeleton dungeon spawner is often the first repeatable XP source worth building. The spawner activates only when a player is close enough, so the farm must put the waiting and killing positions inside its activation range.
Simple water-channel design
- Light the room and mark the spawner’s location before removing blocks.
- Clear the required area around it, then use water channels to move mobs into a single collection point.
- Build a drop or holding chamber that leaves mobs alive with low health.
- Stand at the kill slit and finish each mob with a weapon. If using an automatic device, confirm that it still awards XP in your edition.
- Add hoppers and storage only after XP collection works. Item throughput does not prove that the farm is awarding experience.
Skeleton farms supply bones and arrows; zombie farms can supply rotten flesh and occasional equipment. Their output is lower than a dedicated guardian or Enderman farm, but the short build time and immediate availability make them practical for enchanting and repairing tools.

Furnace and smelter XP: slow but bankable
Furnaces retain the experience from smelted items until you take the output. A hopper-fed array can therefore act as an XP bank: let it process crops or mined materials, then remove a finished item when you need a burst for mending or enchanting.

Crop choices and reported rates
| Input | Reported output | How to read the figure |
|---|---|---|
| Cactus in one furnace | About 360 XP per real-time hour | Figure summarized from a Minecraft Wiki farming tutorial for a single-furnace setup; its fuel and throughput assumptions apply, and cactus XP differs between Java and Bedrock. |
| Potatoes | About 252 XP per hour | Guide estimate under stated assumptions; actual output changes with furnace count, fuel, and collection timing. |
| Kelp | About 72 XP per hour | Guide estimate under stated assumptions; dried kelp can also be used as fuel in an expanded design. |
Reliable smelter layout
- Place furnaces in a row or array with a hopper feeding the top and a hopper pulling the output from the bottom.
- Supply fuel from the side hopper. Use a renewable fuel source if the array is intended to run unattended.
- Send output to a chest, but leave a safe way to access one furnace’s output directly.
- When you need XP, remove an item from the furnace output slot rather than taking only items from the chest; stored furnace XP is released when the furnace is manually emptied.
- Measure your own edition and version for a full cycle before scaling up. Cactus, potato, and kelp values are not interchangeable across editions.
Nether quartz mining for an immediate burst
Quartz ore gives XP when mined and is abundant enough to provide a rapid early-Nether boost. One guide recommends strip mining around Y=15 and reports gaining 3–4 levels in minutes. That result depends on ore exposure, tool speed, luck, and the player’s starting level.
Safer quartz runs
- Bring fire resistance, food, blocks, and a spare pickaxe.
- Mine from a tunnel rather than opening a large unsupported cavity; lava pockets and ghasts are the main hazards.
- Mark the portal route and carry the quartz home frequently instead of risking a full inventory.
- Stop when the ore density drops. Quartz is excellent for a short burst but does not compete with an operating mob farm for long sessions.
Sculk: high-value blocks in a dangerous biome
Sculk can be an efficient one-time source of XP while exploring an Ancient City. Summaries of the Minecraft Wiki farming tutorial list 1 XP for breaking a sculk block and 5 XP for breaking a sculk sensor or sculk shrieker. The Deep Dark’s danger, rather than the mining speed, is the limiting factor.
How to collect it without losing the run
- Use wool to reduce vibrations and carry tools suited to quickly clearing sculk.
- Locate sensors and shriekers before mining. Triggering too many shriekers can summon the Warden.
- Break blocks from the edge, retreating to a prepared escape route.
- Use Silk Touch only when you want the blocks themselves; XP comes from the relevant break conditions, not from storing the blocks.
- Leave once your inventory is full or the warning level becomes unsafe. Sculk is a burst source, not usually a permanent XP farm.
Fixed XP events worth knowing
Ender Dragon
The first Ender Dragon kill awards 12,000 XP. Later respawned-dragon kills award 500 XP each. These values are game rules, so no farm design can increase the reward for a particular kill.
Best Value
Player death
When a player dies, the game drops 7 × the player’s current level in XP, capped at 100 points; any remaining XP is lost. Store valuable levels before dangerous monument, Nether, End, or Deep Dark work instead of treating a death as a harmless setback.
Make any XP farm faster and safer
- Fix the kill credit first. If mobs die from fall damage or another non-player cause, the farm may produce items but no XP.
- Control the mob cap. Light caves, roof nearby spawnable spaces, or move the AFK point as the design requires. A farm cannot reach its intended rate while other locations consume the available hostile-mob slots.
- Match the edition. Java and Bedrock differ in spawn rules, redstone behavior, furnace XP, and some farm mechanics. Use a design labelled for your exact edition and version.
- Use the correct simulation distance. The player must keep the farm’s spawning, transport, and kill chunks active; too far away can make a working build appear dead.
- Prevent orb loss. Keep the collection point unobstructed, avoid water currents that carry orbs away, and stand close enough for them to home toward you.
- Plan storage and overflow. Full chests, blocked hoppers, and entity buildup can stop a farm even when spawning is healthy.
- Test before AFKing. Run the farm for a few minutes, watch a mob spawn and die, collect an orb, and inspect the output chest. Only then leave it running unattended.
Troubleshooting by symptom
Mobs spawn, but the XP bar does not move
Check the final damage source. Replace a fully automatic fall, lava, or suffocation kill with a manual hit or a mechanism documented to preserve player credit. Also verify that you are close enough to collect the orbs.
No mobs spawn
Confirm the spawner is active or that you are in the farm’s spawning range. Check light levels, spawnable floor space, mob-cap competition, and edition-specific block rules. On a guardian farm, nearby ocean or cave spaces may need spawn-proofing; on an Enderman farm, the main island may be stealing spawns.
The farm works, but output is far below the guide
Compare version, edition, AFK height, simulation distance, and the guide’s preparation steps. Rates quoted for a drained monument, Nether roof, or heavily spawn-proofed area cannot be expected from an unprepared location.
Items collect but the farm lags or jams
Reduce entity accumulation, enlarge storage, clear blocked hopper lines, and add an emergency shutoff. A slower stable farm gives more usable XP than a theoretically faster build that crashes or destroys its own drops.
Best choice by goal
| Your goal | Choose | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| First reliable levels for enchanting | Zombie or skeleton spawner | Low infrastructure and immediate player-kill XP. |
| Passive XP while processing resources | Furnace bank | Stored smelting XP can be collected when needed. |
| Fast burst in a new dimension | Nether quartz | No farm construction, but dangerous and finite in a local area. |
| Best balance after entering the End | Enderman farm | High output with less monument preparation than a guardian farm. |
| Highest long-session potential | Guardian farm | Community guides rank it first, provided the large build and spawn controls are completed. |
| XP plus a major resource stream | Gold/zombified-piglin farm | Produces gold while supplying mid-to-late-game XP. |
For most worlds, the efficient progression is a spawner or smelter first, quartz during the first Nether trips, an enderman farm after reaching the End, and a guardian farm only when the larger build is worth the additional preparation. Recheck the design against the Minecraft Wiki for your current Java or Bedrock version before investing in a version-sensitive farm.
