If a new PC game will not launch, start with the exact error message, restart Windows, and use the game launcher’s built-in file verification. The cause could be a failed download, a launcher or game-specific issue, or a compatibility problem; the symptom alone is not enough to diagnose it. Work through the checks below before changing security settings or making broad system changes.
1. Identify what happens when you click Play
Note whether nothing happens, the launcher reports an error, a game process remains open, the game crashes, or an anti-cheat message appears. Record the complete wording and any error code. Also note the game title, launcher, Windows version, and any recent game or driver changes. Check whether other games launch; that can help distinguish a title-specific problem from a wider PC issue.
Use the exact symptom to find the right official guidance. For example, Steam has separate instructions for a game that appears to be already running and for a missing executable. Steam: “Failed to start game (app already running)”; Steam: “Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable)”.
2. Restart Windows and retry through the launcher
Restart the PC, open the launcher you normally use, and try the game again. If Steam says the game is already running, check whether a leftover game process is still open and follow Steam’s error-specific instructions rather than repeatedly clicking Play. For a third-party game, check whether its publisher specifies a different launch route.

3. Verify the game’s installed files
A damaged file or incomplete download can stop a game from starting. Use the launcher’s own verification tool instead of deleting or replacing game files manually.
Steam
Open Steam’s library, right-click the game, choose Properties, then Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. Steam says verification can take several minutes; let it finish and avoid other intensive tasks while it runs. Its support pages also recommend restarting and verifying when a missing executable may be caused by corrupted files or a failed download. Epic Games Launcher
In the Epic Games Launcher, open your Library, select the three-dot menu for the game, and choose Manage followed by Verify. Epic says verification checks local game files for damage or corruption. Follow Epic’s current file verification instructions if the labels or layout differ.
4. Check requirements and official notices for the game
Compare your PC with the game’s official minimum system requirements, then check the publisher’s support page or current notices for that specific title. A game may fail to start because the system does not meet a requirement or because the publisher has documented a known issue. Steam’s general troubleshooting also mentions keeping Windows updated and ensuring required components are present, but the right fix depends on the game and error. Do not change drivers, runtimes, BIOS settings, or compatibility options based only on a generic checklist; use guidance from the game publisher or relevant hardware vendor for your situation. Steam’s general page is “Games do not run after ‘Preparing to Launch’”.

5. Check for security or software conflicts cautiously
Security software is one possible cause, not proof of a problem. Capcom notes that security software can sometimes prevent a game executable from launching. Check antivirus or security-app alerts and quarantine for a game file, then follow the publisher’s instructions for handling it. Do not disable antivirus or firewall protection wholesale. If the game’s official support guidance identifies a specific overlay or background utility as a possible conflict, test that recommendation and restore the setting afterward if it does not help. When restarting, file verification, and the title’s official checks have not resolved the issue, contact the game publisher’s support team. Include the exact error text or code, the game and launcher, your Windows version and relevant system details, whether other games start, and the steps you have already tried. These details help support narrow down a title-specific failure. Steam also recommends contacting the game’s support team for a persistent launch problem; for an issue isolated to one PC configuration, a local PC technician may be able to help.
