How to Compare NHL Goalies for a Matchup

A sound goalie matchup comparison combines workload and core results with shot-location splits, game-state measures, video observations, and opponent context—not wins alone.

To compare two NHL goalies for a matchup, look at workload and core results first, then check shot-location and game-state splits, review recurring patterns in goals against, and consider how those observations fit the opponent. Wins alone are not a reliable measure of which goalie is more likely to perform better. Always use the same season and date range, separate regular-season from playoff numbers, and verify the expected starters close to game time.

1. Confirm the matchup and make the comparison fair

Before comparing statistics, verify the expected starters and the game date. A goalie matchup is only useful if both players are likely to start; starter assignments can change, and the NHL.com season and historical matchup pages cited here do not confirm who will start a future game.

Set the same comparison window for both goalies. Keep regular-season and playoff statistics separate, and record games played and starts alongside the figures you compare. Unequal exposure matters: a rate accumulated over a much smaller workload is not directly interchangeable with one earned over a full season. NHL.com’s goalie statistics table includes games, starts, wins, losses, overtime losses, shots against, saves, goals against, save percentage, goals-against average, time on ice, and shutouts.

2. Start with workload and overall results

Read volume and rates together. Shots faced and time on ice help show how much work a goalie has done; starts and games played help put that workload in context. Then compare save percentage and goals-against average (GAA), with shutouts as another outcome rather than a complete summary of performance.

Save percentage describes the share of shots stopped, while GAA describes goals allowed per game. Neither captures every part of a goalie’s performance or the team environment in front of them. Wins, losses, and overtime losses are team outcomes as well as goalie results, so use them as context—not as the deciding column.

3. Check where and when the shots came from

An overall save percentage can conceal differences across shot locations and game situations. NHL EDGE provides save-percentage views for high-, mid-, and long-range shots, along with 5-on-5 measures that include close-situation save percentage. These splits can reveal patterns worth investigating when an overall rate looks similar or does not tell the whole story.

Use the splits as context, not as a complete adjustment for shot difficulty. They do not fully account for every defensive factor, including screens, rebounds, or the quality of the chance. A lower rate in a particular split is a signal to examine, not by itself proof of a stable weakness. See NHL EDGE goalie statistics.

4. Interpret Saves Above Projected precisely

NHL EDGE defines Saves Above Projected as the number of shots on goal faced minus the sum of the projected goal rate on inferred shot attempts faced. The NHL definition excludes attempts taken from greater than 60 feet, beyond the goal line, or against an empty net. Keep that name, definition, and those exclusions attached when discussing the figure; do not silently treat it as interchangeable with every other goals-saved-above-expected statistic. The measure adds a projection-based view, but it does not remove the need to consider workload, game context, or how the metric is defined.

5. Look for patterns in goals against

Statistics can point to questions that video review helps explore: Were goals scored through traffic, from particular angles, or after a technique breakdown? Look for repeated examples rather than drawing a conclusion from one goal. NHL.com matchup analyses have described charting 100 goals against each goalie in specific playoff comparisons: its 2026 Hart–Wedgewood Western Conference Final analysis and Oettinger–Wallstedt first-round analysis. Those were the samples used in those articles, not an official scouting standard or proof that a pattern will recur in the next game.

6. Connect the evidence to the opponent

For the specific matchup, consider whether the opponent’s likely shot profile intersects with a documented strength or vulnerability. For example, a location split may be relevant if the opponent regularly generates attempts from that area, but the split alone cannot establish how the goalie will handle those chances in this game. Keep the distinction clear between what has been observed and what you predict.

No universal weighting formula is established for combining these indicators into a matchup win probability. If you make a forecast, explain the method and uncertainty rather than presenting a collection of goalie statistics as a validated prediction.

A practical comparison checklist

  • Confirm both expected starters and the game date near game time.
  • Use matching season, date-range, and regular-season or playoff filters.
  • Show games, starts, shots faced, and time on ice beside rate statistics.
  • Compare save percentage and GAA, while treating wins as team context.
  • Check NHL EDGE location and 5-on-5 splits, noting what they do not control for.
  • If using Saves Above Projected, name NHL EDGE’s definition and exclusions.
  • Use video patterns as observations from a stated sample, not guaranteed predictors.
  • Relate any observed evidence to the opponent’s likely shot profile and label forecasts as uncertain.
