To compare Jake Oettinger fairly with other top NHL goalies, use statistics from the same season and competition, pair save percentage with goals-against average, and show how much each goalie played. Treat wins and shutouts as team outcomes—not standalone measures of goalie quality—and separate regular-season results from playoff results.
Which stats are most useful for comparing goalies?
No single traditional statistic captures a goalie’s performance. Read efficiency, workload and outcomes together, then account for situation and team context.

What do the 2025–26 regular-season numbers show?
The NHL’s official 2025–26 regular-season table lists Oettinger with 54 games and starts, 35 wins, 1,372 shots against, 1,234 saves, 138 goals against, a .899 save percentage, a 2.59 GAA and four shutouts. The table also lists Andrei Vasilevskiy at .912 and 2.31 over 58 starts, and Logan Thompson at .912 and 2.44 over 58 starts. This is a same-season descriptive comparison, not a definitive ranking of skill. Oettinger’s lower save percentage than Vasilevskiy and Thompson is a clear difference in the reported rates; the figures alone do not explain why it occurred or adjust for the shots each faced.

Why wins and team defense need context
Wins and shutouts are useful records of game outcomes, but they depend on more than the goalie. For context, Dallas allowed 2.71 goals per game in 2025–26, compared with Colorado’s 2.40. Team goals against per game describes the team, not an individual goalie, and does not prove that team defense caused any one goalie’s result. Check team statistics alongside goalie results.
Same-team comparisons can also add context without establishing causation. The Dallas Stars’ July 27, 2026 profile gives Casey DeSmith’s 2025–26 line as 15-8-6, a 2.43 GAA and a .907 save percentage, compared with Oettinger’s .899. Senior staff writer Mike Heika called Oettinger’s season “okay” under the new coaching staff and noted that his save percentage was the worst of his career; that is the club writer’s assessment, not an official league designation. How to compare a particular matchup or situation
When comparing Oettinger with a named goalie, first match the season and competition. If the question is about performance at five-on-five, use a five-on-five statistic rather than a full-game rate. - Use the same season range and situation filters for both goalies.
- Show games and starts, and add shots against or minutes when available.
- Label any split or small sample instead of presenting it as a season-long conclusion.
Keep regular-season and playoff records separate
Oettinger’s results vary by season and competition, so combining them can obscure what a comparison means.

2024–25 regular season
The Stars’ August 2025 profile reports a 36-18-4 record, .909 save percentage, 2.59 GAA and two shutouts in 58 games. It says he ranked 12th in the league in both GAA and save percentage that season. Read the 2025 profile.
2025 playoffs
The same profile reports a .905 save percentage and 2.82 GAA in 18 starts. Those playoff figures are a separate competition from the 2024–25 regular season.

For the specific span from 2022–23 through 2025–26, the NHL’s multi-season goalie table lists Oettinger at 228 games, 143 wins, a .909 save percentage and a 2.56 GAA. Those totals and rates apply to that four-season selection; they should not be mistaken for career figures or a single-season line. Select the seasons in the NHL statistics table.

What traditional stats cannot tell you
Save percentage and GAA summarize outcomes; neither, as presented here, adjusts for shot quality. A goals-saved-above-expected figure could address a different question by comparing results with an expected baseline, but a comparable, season-labeled Oettinger value is not established by the sources cited here. Do not describe his basic rates as shot-quality-adjusted. If adding an advanced metric from another provider, name the provider, its definition and the season so readers can interpret the comparison.
