The right choice is the one whose face, proportions, customization options, animation and overall visual tone make you want to keep playing that character. Compare the exact race, body type, class and game version you will use, inspect the model both up close and at normal gameplay distance, and treat “classic,” “modern,” “SD” and “HD” as version-specific labels rather than universal quality rankings.
What the model labels actually mean
Players often use “classic model” and “modern model” as if they were two permanent, clearly defined products. In practice, those labels can describe different things depending on the World of Warcraft version, patch, race and setting being discussed. A screenshot from a Classic release, a Retail character-creation screen and an announced Forever visual preset may not represent the same options.

Classic and modern are descriptive, not quality grades
Older models generally have simpler geometry, textures and facial construction, while newer models usually add more facial detail, revised proportions, additional expressions and more elaborate animation. That does not make the newer presentation automatically preferable. Some players value the exaggerated silhouettes and familiar faces associated with older versions; others prefer the cleaner detail and expanded customization of later models. Forum comments about the difference include conflicting judgments about face design, animation and whether an update preserves the older visual identity. Those comments show the range of personal reactions, not a representative player survey.
SD and HD need a product and patch attached to them
Blizzard Entertainment’s October 7, 2026 announcement for World of Warcraft: Forever discusses work on Standard-Definition (SD) player character models and High-Definition (HD) druid forms. A September 12, 2026 “What’s Next” panel recap also describes modern and Classic visual presets and HD/SD character-model choices. These are announcements about an evolving Forever project. They should not be presented as proof that every Retail or Classic client already contains the same controls. Before comparing screenshots or writing down a recommendation, identify the game version, patch and exact model setting visible in the interface.

If a choice is announced but not yet present on your character-creation screen, it is not an option you can evaluate in that client. Check the current in-game menu and patch notes when you make the decision.
Begin with the character you will actually play
Model comparisons become misleading when they use a different race, body type or class from the one you intend to spend hundreds of hours playing. A face that looks balanced on one race can feel too narrow or too severe on another, and a class animation can change how often you notice a model’s movement.
- Select the race first. Compare only the model variants available to that race. Options are not a universal catalog shared by every character.
- Set the body type and class you intend to use. Silhouette, armor coverage and class actions affect how the model reads during normal play.
- Use the same camera and lighting when possible. A creator preview can make texture detail look more important than it is during quests, combat or travel.
- Record the version and patch. Write down whether you are in Retail, a particular Classic release or Forever, plus the model preset or SD/HD setting shown in the menu.
This like-for-like setup prevents a common mistake: choosing a model because a different race looks good in a promotional screenshot.
Compare the customization you can really use
Blizzard’s character-customization redesign treats appearance as separate categories rather than one undifferentiated list. The character-creation and Barber Shop interfaces share the same general approach, so you can preview available choices when creating a character and revise eligible features later at the Barber Shop.
Inspect each category instead of judging the default face
Hover over the available choices and examine the categories presented for your character. Blizzard’s documented interface separates choices such as eyes, face and facial hair; other categories can appear according to race and character. The default face is only one combination, not a complete representation of the model’s range.

- Face: Compare brow shape, cheek volume, jaw width and how the face reads in profile as well as straight on.
- Eyes: Check eye shape, color and spacing at the close preview distance, then see whether those details remain visible during ordinary play.
- Hair and facial hair: Look at the silhouette from the front and back. Hair can hide or emphasize the geometry around the forehead, ears and neck.
- Body and markings: Check any race-specific body, skin, horn, tattoo or marking choices offered in that client. Their availability can vary by race and version.
Do not infer the number of player-facing choices from technical permutation figures. Blizzard’s 2020 Engineer’s Workshop: Enhancing Character Customization article described Shadowlands texture permutations in the range of millions. That figure refers to possible texture combinations generated by the system, not millions of distinct buttons a player can select and not a measurement of visual quality.
Use the Barber Shop as a second test
If you already have a character, open the Barber Shop and inspect the same categories available during creation. This lets you evaluate the model with your usual transmog, hair coverage and equipment rather than a bare creator preview. Not every feature is necessarily editable on every race or in every version, so rely on the controls actually shown in your client.

A static face is only one part of the model. Animation can determine whether a character feels lively, heavy, comic, stern or familiar after hours of play. A Blizzard-hosted discussion illustrates the split in priorities: some players focus heavily on animation, while others care more about the face or barely notice movement beneath transmog. These are individual opinions, not measured preferences.
Check three movement situations
- Idle stance: Leave the character still long enough to notice breathing, posture, head movement and how the face settles. An appealing screenshot can feel different when the character repeatedly returns to its idle pose.
- Run and turn: Watch the silhouette from the side and rear while running, stopping and changing direction. Look for stride length, arm swing, shoulder motion and whether the model feels too rigid or too exaggerated for your taste.
- Class actions: Use representative attacks, casts or abilities available to the class. Spell gestures, weapon swings and recovery poses can be more visible than facial detail during combat.
Try to view these motions without relying on a single cinematic or emote. A model may look excellent in a posed animation but less convincing during the repeated movement you will see while questing. Conversely, a face that seems plain in the creator can work well once its normal idle and combat motions establish the character’s personality.
Judge visual tone as a complete style
“Modern” can mean more detail, but detail is not the same as a better match for your preferred World of Warcraft look. Evaluate the model’s tone through several connected features.

Proportions and silhouette
Stand back from the creator preview and ask whether the head, shoulders, torso and limbs form the kind of silhouette you want to see under armor. The silhouette remains recognizable when facial textures are hidden by a helmet or viewed at a distance. Compare front, side and rear views rather than judging only the camera angle that the creator opens with.

At close range, compare the construction of the eyes, mouth, nose, jaw and surface texture. Decide whether the result feels expressive, stylized, severe, youthful or overly realistic for the game’s broader art direction. The important question is not whether a face has more lines or sharper texture; it is whether those details create the character identity you want.
Consistency with the surrounding game
Place the character in an ordinary zone, city or dungeon and compare it with nearby NPCs, party members and mounts. A model can be attractive in isolation but feel out of place beside the visual language you enjoy. This is especially useful when deciding between a familiar older presentation and a newer, more detailed one.
Use two viewing distances before deciding
The character-creation camera encourages close inspection, but most play happens farther away. Make both views part of the test.
- Close view: Inspect the face, eye choices, hairline, beard or markings and the way textures respond to lighting.
- Gameplay view: Zoom to the distance you normally use while questing, traveling and fighting. Check the silhouette, posture and whether the features you selected remain legible.
- Equipment view: Put on the kind of armor, helmet and weapon set you expect to use. Transmog can cover the face, hair or body and make animation more important than small texture differences.
- Group view: Look at the character beside other players or NPCs. Relative scale and color can change your impression of a model.
Choose the view that reflects how you actually play. If you spend most of your time in a helmet and at a zoomed-out camera, a tiny forehead texture should not outweigh an animation or silhouette that you will see in every encounter.

A repeatable comparison method
The following process keeps the decision personal while making it more consistent.
- Define the target. Write down the race, body type, class and game version you will use. Add the patch number or date if you are comparing screenshots from different sessions.
- List the available model settings. In the current character-creation or Barber Shop interface, note the labels actually offered, such as a modern, Classic, SD or HD preset. Do not import a setting from another client by assumption.
- Build comparable faces. Use the same broad face, hair and marking choices where the interfaces allow a fair comparison. If a category exists in one model but not another, record that difference as part of the choice.
- Preview every relevant category. Hover through eyes, face, hair, facial hair and other race-specific controls. Inspect both profile and front views.
- Test motion. Observe idle, running and class actions. Repeat the test after equipping representative armor or a helmet.
- Check normal gameplay distance. Leave the creator, place the character in an ordinary environment and use your usual camera distance. Compare the silhouette and visual tone with the surrounding world.
- Remove the labels. If possible, have someone show you the two versions without saying which is which, or take screenshots with the labels hidden. Decide which character you would rather look at before letting the word “classic” or “modern” influence you.
- Choose the character you want to keep seeing. There is no universal winner established by the available evidence. Your final choice should reflect your own reaction to the complete character, not a claim that one model is objectively superior.
How to resolve common trade-offs
More facial detail versus a familiar face
A newer model may offer finer texture and a broader set of facial combinations, while an older presentation may preserve the proportions or expression you associate with the character. Decide whether you identify the character primarily by surface detail or by its older shape and expression. Test the face with your usual hair and helmet before choosing.
Animation versus appearance
If you spend much of a session moving or fighting, animation may dominate your experience. If you spend time in menus, role-play scenes or close-up screenshots, face and customization may carry more weight. The only reliable priority is the one that matches your routine; the Blizzard-hosted discussion demonstrates that players assign these priorities differently.
Customization range versus a single favorite preset
A large menu is valuable only when it contains combinations you actually like. Count the categories and inspect their quality, but do not select a model solely because its interface appears longer. A smaller set that gives you a convincing face and silhouette can be the better practical choice.

Visual continuity versus technical freshness
Some players want the character to blend with an older, stylized world; others prefer updated geometry and texture detail. Compare the character beside the environments and NPCs you visit most often. This reveals whether continuity or freshness matters more to you than a creator-screen close-up.

Version and availability checks that prevent bad comparisons
Recent Forever announcements make version labeling especially important. Use this checklist before relying on a guide, video or screenshot:
- Identify whether the material comes from Retail, a named Classic release or World of Warcraft: Forever.
- Check the publication date and the game patch shown in the footage.
- Read the exact setting name. “Classic,” “modern,” “SD” and “HD” may refer to different systems in different clients.
- Confirm that the race and class match your character. A druid-form announcement, for example, is not a general player-model setting.
- Open your own character-creation or Barber Shop screen to verify that the option is currently selectable.
The October 7, 2026 Forever announcement covers planned or evolving visual work, including SD player character models and HD druid forms. The September 12 panel recap likewise describes visual presets and HD/SD choices in the Forever context. Neither announcement should be generalized to every World of Warcraft version, and an announced feature may change before it reaches a live client.
Why online opinions disagree
Model discussions often sound contradictory because people are answering different questions. One person may be judging a face in a creator preview, another may be reacting to a run cycle, and a third may be comparing a transmogged character at long distance. Lighting, camera zoom, race, hairstyle and nostalgia all influence the result.
The August 30, 2022 World of Warcraft Forums thread titled “Classic character model vs Modern character models” preserves the literal player question, “Which do you people like or prefer more when playing World of Warcraft? And how has it change your experience in terms of playing your character and game?” The grammar and wording are part of the original forum post. The replies provide useful examples of differing reactions, but they are anecdotes rather than a preference study. Use them to identify aspects to test—face design, animation, visual identity—not to establish a winner.
What Blizzard’s customization redesign tells you
Blizzard’s Engineer’s Workshop: Enhancing Character Customization describes the technical and interface work behind the Shadowlands-era redesign. The system organizes appearance choices into categories, supports hover previews and uses a shared approach between character creation and the Barber Shop. That structure is why a careful comparison should inspect each category instead of stopping at the first default preview.
The same article’s “millions” figure describes texture permutations generated by the system. It is useful context for understanding why combinations can be extensive, but it does not tell you how many distinct player-facing options your race has today. Only the controls displayed in your current client answer that question.
A final decision rule
After testing both options on your intended character, ask one question: which version would you be happiest to see during an ordinary session, including travel, combat, group play and the moments when armor hides part of the model? If the answer changes depending on camera distance, give the greater weight to the distance you normally use. If it changes depending on whether the character is moving, decide whether your routine makes animation or static appearance more visible.
Keep your notes tied to the version and patch you tested. When Blizzard changes a model or adds a preset, repeat the same race-and-class comparison rather than assuming an old verdict still applies. Model choice is an ongoing personal preference, not a ranking that can be settled for every player.
