The hole leads to an optional chest with a Golden Egg. To finish the quest, light both torches beyond the rift with an Ignizol and speak to the Gerudo descendant.
Find the cave and start the quest
Ancestors’ Cave of Rest is at the far north end of the Gerudo Desert, north of the large rift in the sandstorm area. Go inside and speak to the Gerudo there to begin the Rift quest; she is concerned that the cave’s torches have gone out. Zelda Dungeon’s Gerudo Desert walkthrough documents the location and quest sequence.

Reach and learn the Holmill Echo
- Use Bind to move the large boulder on the left side of the cave, then go through the opening and one screen left.
- Defeat the two Holmills in the next room. A Sand Piranha Echo is one suggested way to do this.
- Use Bind on the large boulder at the top of the room to expose the ladder.
- Learn the Holmill Echo before climbing onward. You need this Echo to dig through the sand.
Dig through the sand and collect the chest
In the sand area, place a Holmill Echo at the far-left portion of the sand to dig a hole. Drop through it to reach the chest containing a Golden Egg. This chest is optional; continue to the northeast end of the sand area and climb the ladder to proceed with the quest.
Light the torches and complete the quest
On the other side of the rift, use an Ignizol to light both torches. Afterward, the Gerudo ancestor tells Zelda to speak to her descendant. Zelda appears on the other side of the rift; talk to the Gerudo there to complete the quest.

If the sand or quest objective does not progress
- Holmill does not dig: Make sure you learned the Holmill Echo in the room with the two Holmills, and place it at the far-left side of the sand area.
- The torches are lit but the quest remains active: Speak to the Gerudo descendant across the rift, as the ancestor directs.
