Pokémon GO’s Go Big event ran from September 10 to September 15, 2024, and has ended. During it, players could take on one-star Max Battles featuring Dynamax Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Skwovet, and Wooloo. To complete a battle, bring an eligible Dynamax Pokémon, spend Max Particles to enter, fill the battle meter with attacks and collected energy, then use Max Moves during the three-turn Dynamax phase. The event’s dates and bonuses are historical; the battle steps below describe the general mechanics in Pokémon GO’s Go Big announcement and official Max Battle guide.
What happened during the Go Big event?
The event ran Tuesday, September 10, 2024, at 10 a.m. through Sunday, September 15, 2024, at 8 p.m. local time. It introduced Dynamax Pokémon in one-star Max Battles. The featured lineup was Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Skwovet, and Wooloo. Trainers also received 2× XP for winning Max Battles and 2× XP for spinning PokéStops, according to the event announcement.
The event’s Max Out Special Research included Max Battle-focused tasks that could award Max Particles, a new avatar item, and other rewards. The stated window to claim that research ended December 3, 2024, at 9:59 a.m. local time. These event-specific opportunities and bonuses are no longer available.
What do you need before entering a Max Battle?
- An eligible Pokémon: Standard Dynamax Max Battles require Dynamax Pokémon; a Trainer must have at least one Dynamax Pokémon in the battle party. The Go Big announcement said Pokémon caught from Max Battle encounters, and their evolutions, could be Dynamaxed in Max Battles. The official “To the Max!” Special Research was identified as a way to catch initial Dynamax Pokémon.
- Max Particles: Battles take place at active Power Spots, which also provide Max Particles. You must have enough particles to enter, and the cost depends on the boss’s strength. The official guide says particles are spent only when the boss is defeated. It does not establish stable numerical collection or storage caps, so check the current game for your limits.
- A prepared battle party: Max Moves can be unlocked and strengthened with Candy and Max Particles. A Dynamax Pokémon can have an attack, Max Spirit, and Max Guard; the attack type depends on its Fast Attack.
How to complete a Max Battle, step by step
- Find an active Power Spot. Open the map and look for a Power Spot hosting a Max Battle. Check the boss and make sure you have the required Max Particles before joining.
- Choose your eligible Pokémon and enter. For a Dynamax Max Battle, use Dynamax Pokémon. Once the battle begins, tap to use Fast Attacks and build energy for Charged Attacks as usual.
- Fill the Max meter. Attacking fills the meter at the top of the screen. Keep attacking while watching for the boss’s targeting prompt.
- Dodge attacks and collect energy. Swipe when the targeting prompt appears to dodge the Power Spot Boss. Swipe toward energy icons on the battlefield to collect them; doing so fills the meter faster.
- Use the three-turn Max phase. When the meter is full, your Pokémon Dynamaxes or Gigantamaxes for three turns. Use the available Max Moves during that window. The Max attack deals damage, Max Spirit heals the user and allies, and Max Guard reduces damage taken.
- Cheer if your whole party faints. Tap to cheer for your teammates so their meters fill faster. The official guide describes cheering as a way to support the remaining Trainers after your Pokémon faint.
- Claim the victory rewards and encounter. Winning grants rewards such as Rare Candy, XP, and Premier Balls, then gives you an encounter and a chance to catch the Power Spot Boss. Afterward, you can leave one Pokémon from your battle party at the Power Spot. Stationed Pokémon can earn Candy and provide a damage bonus to future Trainers; they return after enough battles or when the Power Spot closes.
How many Trainers do you need?
The number depends on the boss and the group’s preparation; the official guide does not set one universal minimum for winning. It gives these group-size limits:

Gigantamax battles allow eligible Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon. For either format, consider the boss’s difficulty, the particle cost, and whether the group has prepared its Max Moves rather than relying on a fixed player count.
