Riovanes Castle is a chain of three battles: a gate fight, Ramza’s solo duel with Wiegraf followed immediately by the Belias/Velius battle, and a rooftop rescue for Rafa. Prepare Ramza to survive on his own, carry useful health or buffs into the second phase, focus your party on Belias, then protect Rafa while taking down the assassins.
Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles has Enhanced and Classic versions; the advice below focuses on battle tactics that can be adapted to your mode and difficulty. Specific build examples from guides are not requirements. Square Enix’s official game page describes the two versions and their differences.
Before entering Riovanes Castle
Make a separate save before starting the sequence, then check Ramza and the reserve party members you expect to use. One walkthrough describes the battles as chained, but whether the current release lets you leave and reconfigure after starting is not settled; do not rely on being able to change Ramza’s setup mid-sequence.
Build Ramza to last alone
Ramza’s party cannot help during the Wiegraf duel. Favor a combination of sustain, mobility, and reliable damage over a build that only works with party support. Depending on your job and available abilities, options include Auto-Potion, Monk healing such as Chakra, a movement ability, or Squire’s Yell (also called Tailwind in some localizations) to build speed. These are alternative tools, not mandatory skills.

- Consider ranged attacks or other ways to act without standing beside an enemy who can counter physical attacks.
- Keep mobility in mind: Ramza needs room to disengage in the duel, while the party benefits from reaching threats quickly later.
A Wccftech guide documents one successful Enhanced Mode Tactician setup built around a physical job, Auto-Potion, a secondary command, a movement ability, and X-Potions as the remaining potion type. That is one author’s verified playthrough strategy, not a universal build requirement. Read the Wccftech Riovanes guide.
Plan for the gate battle
The gate encounter includes Knights, Archers, and spellcasters. Let durable units absorb pressure while ranged attackers, casters, and item users support them. Avoid sending fragile characters into poor positions simply to reach an enemy sooner; controlling space is more useful than rushing the group.
Win Ramza’s duel with Wiegraf
Ramza fights Wiegraf alone, so the first goal is to stay alive and control the pace. Wiegraf can counter physical attacks, making repeated close-range swings risky when they will not finish him.
Rank #2
- A Nintendo Switch Online membership may be required for online play. Please check the game detail page on Nintendo.com for membership requirements.
- Survive the opening. Heal when necessary and use Auto-Potion or a healing skill if your setup supports it.
- Create space. Move away when you need time to heal, build speed, or line up a safer attack.
- Use buffs when there is an opening. Yell/Tailwind can improve Ramza’s speed; attack buffs can help end the duel sooner. Do not spend a turn buffing if doing so leaves Ramza exposed to a likely defeat.
- Choose attacks with the counter in mind. Use ranged options where available, or attack at close range when the damage can decisively finish Wiegraf.
The duel flows directly into the Belias/Velius fight. Ramza’s remaining health and any accumulated speed or attack buffs can shape the opening of that battle, so avoid ending the duel in a condition that leaves him unable to contribute.
Defeat Belias/Velius after the transformation
After the duel, Wiegraf transforms into Belias, also called Velius in some translations, and summons three Archaeodaemons. Ramza’s selected party joins him. Belias is the main target: spending several turns clearing every Archaeodaemon can give the boss more time to attack.
Manage the opening turns
- Spread out. Belias’s Cyclops summon is a major area threat, so avoid clustering characters when positioning allows.
- Concentrate damage on Belias. Send your strongest available attacks toward the boss rather than treating every demon as an equal priority.
- Keep Ramza active. Use the health, speed, or attack advantage carried over from the duel, but do not leave him in danger just to preserve a damage rotation.
- Revive quickly. If a key unit falls, a prompt revival can restore healing or damage capacity before the next enemy actions.
- Use disables or control when useful. A status effect that buys time can be more valuable than spending turns defeating every summoned enemy.
These are tactical priorities rather than guarantees: the right target or action depends on your party’s jobs, abilities, and current battle state. The Position Is Everything walkthrough covers the sequence and its suggested tactics in more detail: Riovanes Castle walkthrough.

Save Rafa on the rooftop
The final encounter is a rescue: keep Rafa alive while defeating Elmdore’s assassins. The full walkthrough calls the assassins Celia and Lede; other coverage uses Lettie for one name. Localization can differ by edition, so follow the names shown in your game. Elmdore is present, but the walkthrough says the battle ends when both assassins are defeated or forced out, after which Elmdore leaves.
Act before Rafa is overwhelmed
- Use fast units to reach the immediate threats and pressure the assassins early.
- Use ranged attacks where possible so you can contribute damage without losing time moving into position.
- Keep healing and revival support ready for Rafa and any unit who falls while trying to reach her.
- Prioritize actions that protect Rafa or reduce the assassins’ ability to attack her; do not spend early turns on enemies who are not driving the rescue’s danger.
The objective and participants are also identified in Game8’s Riovanes Castle Roof guide.

Choose a setup that fits your party
No single Ramza build is required by the available walkthroughs. Use the combination that addresses the problem you expect to face, and remember that mobility and survival can be more valuable than adding one more damage skill.
| Need | Possible choice | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Sustain in the duel | Auto-Potion, Chakra, or item healing | Healing improves staying power, but a turn spent recovering may extend the duel. |
| More turns or tempo | Squire Yell/Tailwind, or a naturally fast job | Speed can improve Ramza’s opportunities, but buffing is unsafe if Wiegraf can punish the delay. |
| Damage and reach | Strong physical attacks, dual-wielding, or ranged Monk abilities | Close-range damage risks a counter; ranged options may depend on your learned abilities and job setup. |
| Positioning | A movement ability or Teleport | Mobility helps Ramza disengage and lets party members reach threats, at the cost of choosing it over another support option. |
Square Enix describes the game as offering over 20 jobs and over 300 character abilities, but those are game-wide counts, not Riovanes requirements. Square Enix’s announcement does not prescribe a universal level or battle build.
