That state immobilizes the boss and creates a chance to attack. Hydro and Cryo instead cool it and move it back toward Geohuman form, interrupting the Pyro-to-Overburn plan.
How the Lava Dragon Statue’s forms work
HoYoverse describes the Lava Dragon Statue in its Version 5.5 update as “A creature with two forms that is capable of continuously generating heat.” Its fight centers on Fury gauges and a choice between building heat with Pyro or cooling the boss with Hydro or Cryo.
Geohuman form: build the first Fury gauge
The boss begins in Geohuman form. Pyro attacks fill its first Fury gauge; when the gauge fills, it transforms into Molten Dragon form.
Molten Dragon form: keep using Pyro for Overburn
In Molten Dragon form, Pyro advances a second Fury gauge. Filling that gauge triggers Overburn, during which the boss becomes immobilized. Use the opening to deal damage. The documented mechanics do not establish a fixed duration or guarantee a particular damage window, so keep attacking while the state lasts rather than planning around an exact timer.

Cooling is an alternative, not part of the Overburn sequence
Hydro or Cryo cools the boss and moves it back toward Geohuman form. Choose these elements if you want to revert its form; they work against a strategy that depends on continuously filling the second gauge with Pyro.
A practical fight plan
- Bring reliable Pyro application. Use Pyro attacks to fill the gauge while the boss is in Geohuman form.
- Switch to sustained Pyro after the transformation. Continue applying it in Molten Dragon form to fill the second Fury gauge and trigger Overburn.
- Attack during Overburn. The boss is immobilized in this state, giving you an opportunity to deal damage.
- Use Hydro or Cryo only if you want to cool it. These elements move the boss toward Geohuman form rather than advancing the Pyro Overburn sequence.
- Dodge while building gauges. The boss uses physical attacks as well as attacks involving Pyro and lava. Avoid incoming attacks as needed; the available mechanics do not establish a single required rotation or universally best team.
Pyro-to-Overburn or Hydro/Cryo cooling?

Neither approach implies a universally best team. Your elemental options and the version of the encounter you are fighting determine which plan makes sense.

Where to find the Lava Dragon Statue
HoYoverse places the boss in Atocpan, Natlan. Game8’s route, updated March 7, 2026, starts at a waypoint southwest of the Stadium of the Sacred Flame: follow the road to a deep chasm, descend, break the hardened Phlogiston obstruction using a Tatankasaurus, Varesa, or Iansan, then enter the cave and activate the waypoint inside. This is third-party navigation guidance; check the current in-game map if the route or obstruction does not match your game.

Do not assume that Stygian Onslaught mechanics apply to the ordinary world boss or to a later event rotation. In its documented Stygian Onslaught version, the Lava Dragon Statue started in Geohuman form with high resistance; Molten Dragon form reduced resistance except to Pyro, and Overburn reduced it further. The event’s “Roiling Agglomeration” modifier increased resistance and required more Pyro damage instances to change form. Hydro or Cryo damage gradually moved that event version back toward Geohuman form. These details describe that named event challenge, not a permanent rule for every encounter.
