Complete the three Trials of Shar—Soft-Step, Self-Same, and Faith-Leap—to earn three Umbral Gems. Then obtain a fourth gem from Yurgir, use one gem to activate the Traversal Gem lift, and place the remaining three into the lower altar.
Short answer: The Gauntlet of Shar has three formal trials: Soft-Step, Self-Same, and Faith-Leap. Each awards one Umbral Gem. A fourth Umbral Gem comes from Yurgir in the eastern section of the Gauntlet. Put one gem into the Traversal Gem mechanism to activate the lift, then place the other three into the altar below to open the way forward.

Gauntlet of Shar checklist
- Complete the Soft-Step Trial and collect its Umbral Gem.
- Complete the Self-Same Trial and collect its Umbral Gem.
- Complete the Faith-Leap Trial and collect its Umbral Gem.
- Deal with Yurgir the Orthon and obtain the fourth Umbral Gem.

The Gauntlet is reached through the Mausoleum in the Shadow-Cursed Lands. Once inside, the Soft-Step and Self-Same rooms are on the upper level. Continue down the spiral stairs to reach the Faith-Leap Trial and the Silent Library. The Silent Library is a separate objective, not one of the three formal trials.

Before starting the trials
Most of the trials are safer and easier with only one character inside. Ungroup the party and send a suitable character ahead so companions do not trigger traps, enter enemy sight cones, or accidentally fall during Faith-Leap.
- Soft-Step: use someone with good Stealth, Sleight of Hand, or reliable mobility.
- Self-Same: position the party before activating the trial, and be prepared to fight the party’s shadow copies.
- Faith-Leap: send one character and use short, deliberate movements.
Shadowheart can offer blood at the trial altars. This is thematically appropriate and may affect her approval, but she is not mechanically required for every solution.
Soft-Step Trial solution
The Soft-Step Trial is a stealth course filled with patrolling shadows, traps, locked or obstructed routes, and a final reward area. The Umbral Gem is at the far end.

How to complete Soft-Step
- Ungroup the party and choose one stealth-focused character.
- Interact with the sacrificial bowl to begin the trial.
- Enter turn-based mode if necessary. This makes the patrol movements easier to track.
- Hide and move through the gaps in the shadows’ patrol routes.
- Disarm traps when doing so is safe, or take a route that avoids them.
- Unlock the final gate, or use a suitable movement spell or ability to reach the far side.
- Take the Umbral Gem from the reward area.
The patrol arrangement is stable, so a failed attempt is usually recoverable by observing which route caused the problem and trying again. Invisibility is the simplest shortcut, but it is not required. Misty Step, flight, and similar mobility tools can also bypass much of the intended route. If you use invisibility, avoid unnecessary interactions or attacks that could end the effect before you reach the gem.
Self-Same Trial solution
The Self-Same Trial creates shadowy duplicates of the active party. These copies use versions of the party’s abilities and attack from ambush positions. Defeat them, then search the reward area for the Umbral Gem.
How to win the Self-Same fight
- Before activating the trial, use the party members you are prepared to fight as duplicates.
- Position the party so fragile characters are not exposed to the initial ambush.
- Identify which duplicate corresponds to each character.
- When practical, have each character attack their own counterpart.
- Focus damage on one duplicate at a time instead of spreading attacks across the group.
- After the fight, search the area and collect the Umbral Gem.
The trial punishes attacks against the wrong duplicate. The penalty can reduce attributes and make the rest of the fight harder, so target matching matters more than simply attacking the nearest enemy. If the opening ambush overwhelms you, reposition the party and begin again rather than rushing into a scattered fight.

Some players reduce the copies’ threat by removing equipment before activation and re-equipping afterward. Treat that as an optional tactic rather than a guaranteed exploit: its behavior may vary between game updates. Matching targets, controlled focus fire, and sensible positioning are the reliable approach.

Faith-Leap is a chasm-crossing challenge. A faint route is visible near the entrance, but sections of it fade as the character moves. The correct route connects the safe platforms and ends at the altar on the far side.
How to cross Faith-Leap
- Send one character into the room and interact with the sacrificial bowl.
- Study the route shown near the entrance before moving.
- Move from one safe surface to the next using short movements.
- Confirm the destination before committing to a jump or long movement.
- Continue along the route until you reach the altar at the far end.
- Collect the Umbral Gem.
The visible route is the safest reference. Blind long jumps may be quicker if you already know the path, but an imprecise landing can send the character into the chasm. High Jump, Misty Step, Fly, Dimension Door, and other mobility options can help, but use them carefully and confirm where the character will land.
Where to get the fourth Umbral Gem: Yurgir
The three trials provide only three gems. The fourth Umbral Gem is in Yurgir’s area in the eastern section of the Gauntlet.
Yurgir is an Orthon connected to Raphael’s questline. You can obtain the gem by defeating him, or you can resolve the contract-related encounter through its available dialogue and quest choices. The noncombat route is not merely a puzzle shortcut: the narrative result can affect companion and quest content. Consider your choices carefully if you want to preserve a particular story outcome.
Yurgir’s encounter is separate from the three formal trials. You do not need to mistake the eastern encounter for a fourth trial; you simply need its Umbral Gem for the Gauntlet’s later mechanism.

How to use all four Umbral Gems
Once you have the three trial gems and the gem from Yurgir, use them in this order:
- Go to the Traversal Gem mechanism.
- Place one Umbral Gem into it.
- Use the activated platform to descend to the lower level.
- At the lower altar, place the remaining three Umbral Gems.
- The mechanism opens the route toward the inner sanctum and, ultimately, the Shadowfell.
Do not place all four gems into the first mechanism. One gem activates the lift, while three additional gems are required at the lower altar. If the final door does not open, check your inventory and confirm that one gem was used for the lift and that three remain for the altar.
Silent Library: a separate Gauntlet objective
Completing the three Trials of Shar does not automatically complete the Silent Library. The library is on the lower level and has its own enemies, central puzzle, and reward.

Clear the library, solve its central puzzle, and retrieve the Spear of Night. The spear is important to Shadowheart’s Gauntlet storyline, so do not leave the library assuming that the trial gems have already awarded it.
Other Gauntlet story objectives
The Gauntlet also contains encounters and progression involving Balthazar, Raphael, Yurgir, Shadowheart, and the Nightsong. Completing the three trials is necessary for the broader route, but it does not resolve every quest in the dungeon.
Story spoiler: The route beyond the lower altar leads toward the Shadowfell and major Nightsong and companion developments. Make any desired preparations and finish optional Gauntlet objectives before committing to deeper story progression.

Troubleshooting the Trials of Shar
A trial does not appear to be complete
Reaching the endpoint is not enough. Verify that the character actually collected the Umbral Gem from the reward area. The gem is the practical confirmation that the trial has been completed.
The Self-Same fight is overwhelming
Separate the party before activation, protect fragile characters from the opening ambush, identify each matching duplicate, and focus on one target at a time. Avoid attacking a different duplicate when possible because the trial’s punishment effect can reduce attributes.
A character keeps dying during Faith-Leap
Use a single character, inspect the route at the entrance, and move in short steps from safe surface to safe surface. Avoid blind long jumps unless you already know the route. Mobility spells help only when the landing point is precise.
The Traversal Gem lift is dangerous or inconsistent
Separate the party and move characters onto the platform individually. This reduces the chance that companions trigger a lift-related problem or die during the transition.
The lower door will not open
Confirm that you have all four gems. One must have been placed into the Traversal Gem mechanism, and the other three must be available for the lower altar. If you completed the trials but never dealt with Yurgir, you are still missing the fourth gem.
Can you complete the trials without Shadowheart?
Yes. Shadowheart may offer blood at the altars and is closely connected to the Gauntlet’s story, but she is not mechanically required for every trial solution. You can use another character for stealth, combat, or the Faith-Leap crossing. If companion approval and story context matter to you, consider bringing Shadowheart for relevant interactions even when she is not needed to solve the mechanics.
