Start Steel Resolve before the reported cutoff
Talk to Ranger Captain Acierno at Ranger Headquarters in Emerald Stair. Acierno is investigating the disappearance of senior rangers and suspects one of their own may be responsible. Game8 also reports an alternate way to begin: freeing Ranger Verano during the Trantons bounty. Because Steel Resolve is reported to fail after the Naku Tedek section of Ancient Soil, start and finish it before advancing that far in the main story. Follow the ranger investigation
Question Casagrada and Dorso
Speak with Casagrada at the Fior mes Iverno Docks and Dorso near the Fior Southern Gate Beacon. Their conversations point you toward the next investigation sites. You will return to Dorso later, so do not treat this first conversation as the final confrontation.
Find Verano at the abandoned homestead
The abandoned homestead is tied to the Trantons bounty. After clearing the area, use an ice attack to break the cage bars and speak with Ranger Verano.

Reach Ogre’s Cave and recover Monato’s journal
Ogre’s Cave is in the Grim Wetlands in northwestern Emerald Stair. The walkthrough route approaches it through the Infested Camp. Open the way through the fenced area and fortress by activating two electrical generators; one is behind boards that you must shoot. Inside the cave, confront Ulrask and take Ranger Monato’s journal from a body in the room. There is also a generator that opens a loot room, so activate it before leaving if you want to search that area. Search the tree near Lake Lacuna
Travel southeast of Lake Lacuna in The Wildwoods and inspect the base of the root-strangled tree to find the Clandestine Note.

Speak with Dorso at the waterfall
Follow the quest marker to the tent by the waterfall and talk with Dorso. Ask about her motives, then ask where the Steel Garrote are before choosing whether to attack, exile, or help her. Destructoid describes asking about Lodwyn and then asking where the Steel Garrote are as the dialogue route that reveals the group’s cave behind the waterfall. After the confrontation, return to Acierno at Ranger Headquarters. The report is part of the resolution: what happens depends on Dorso’s fate and what you tell Acierno about the culprit and her motives.

What to know about One Last Trick
Walkthroughs do not fully agree on the precise Acierno dialogue that awards One Last Trick across all branches. NightlyGamingBinge lists particular dialogue sequences, while Destructoid describes conditions that differ for some outcomes. If you want to preserve the possibility of receiving it, a conservative choice is to avoid endorsing Dorso’s motives when you report; then follow the dialogue sequence described in the walkthrough for your branch. Do not assume every report or Dorso outcome grants the item.

Destructoid reports that the cave is behind the waterfall near Dorso’s tent and that clearing it before Ancient Soil prevents Fior mes Iverno from burning. It also says that reporting to Governor Ignasi after clearing the cave can earn gold. These are outcomes described by that walkthrough, not confirmed by official quest documentation. If you want to pursue this regional outcome, learn the cave’s location from Dorso and clear it before advancing the main story past the reported cutoff.
