To turn off an Xbox 360, press the console’s front Power button. From a wireless controller, hold the Xbox Guide button for three seconds and choose the option to turn off the console and controller. If by “completely” you mean disconnecting it from mains power, shut it down first, then unplug its AC power supply.

Turn off the console at the console

Press the Power button on the front of the Xbox 360. Microsoft’s wireless controller manual and wired controller manual both describe this as a way to turn off the console.

Turn it off with a controller

Wireless controller

  1. Hold the Xbox Guide button for three seconds.
  2. Choose the option to turn off the console and controller.

In the shutdown menu, choosing the console turns off the console and all connected controllers. Choosing to turn off only the controller leaves the console running, according to Microsoft’s wireless controller manual.

Wired controller

Hold the Xbox Guide button for three seconds, then confirm that you want to turn off the console. You can also use the front Power button, as described in Microsoft’s wired controller manual.

Disconnect it from mains power

Normal shutdown turns off the console through its controls; it does not physically disconnect the AC supply. If you need the Xbox 360 to have no mains connection, shut it down first, then disconnect its AC power supply. The cited manuals do not quantify how much power a shut-down console uses, so they do not establish a standby-power figure.

Set an automatic shutoff

A Microsoft Xbox 360 console manual describes an option in the Dashboard’s System area to turn the console off automatically after six hours of non-use. This is an inactivity setting; it does not mean the console has already shut down in a particular situation.
