Configure the emulated PlayStation 2 pad in PCSX2, not in a game-specific PC settings menu. Open Settings > Controllers, choose Controller Port 1, select SDL as the input source, and try Automatic Mapping. If the layout is wrong or the controller is not recognized, map each control manually. On Windows, SDL Raw Input can address scrambled or unresponsive inputs, while XInput is a practical fallback for compatible controllers.
Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition is a PlayStation 2 game, so PCSX2 presents it with the original PS2 control model: directional buttons, four face buttons, shoulder buttons, Start, Select and two analog sticks. There is no current, verified PCSX2 preset or complete game-specific mapping table established for this title; the reliable approach is to configure the virtual PS2 controller and verify every input yourself.

What this setup actually configures
PCSX2 emulates the PlayStation 2 hardware. Its controller screen maps your physical gamepad to the console’s virtual Controller Port 1 or Port 2. Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition then reads those virtual PS2 inputs as if an original DualShock 2 were connected. This is why the important settings are in PCSX2 rather than in a Windows gamepad panel.
Player one should normally use Port 1. PCSX2 describes the ports as the console’s front controller sockets, and games almost always expect the first player there. Configure Port 1 before attempting a second pad.

Use the current integrated controller system documented by PCSX2. An older PCSX2 Wiki entry for this game mentions the historical LilyPad 0.11.0 plugin, but that is legacy information from an earlier Windows test setup, not a requirement for a current build. Older input plugins were merged into PCSX2’s present controller configuration.
Open the current guide while working if you need the exact labels: PCSX2 Controllers documentation.
Choose an input source before mapping
The input source determines how PCSX2 receives button and stick events. Start with SDL when it is available, then change sources only when detection or input order requires it.

| DirectInput | Windows | No automatic mapping | Last resort for older or third-party devices that do not work through SDL or XInput |
These choices are documented in PCSX2’s controller guide and FAQ. Device behavior still varies by operating system, firmware and controller mode, so regard automatic mapping as a starting point rather than a guarantee.
Step-by-step: configure Port 1 with SDL
- Connect the controller first. Plug it in or pair it over Bluetooth, turn it on, and leave it in its normal gamepad mode. If your controller has a separate XInput/DirectInput switch, begin with the mode your operating system recognizes as a standard gamepad.
- Open the controller page. In PCSX2, select Settings > Controllers. The page contains the virtual PS2 ports and the available input-source controls. The labels can vary slightly between PCSX2 releases, but the Controllers page is the relevant location.
- Select SDL. Choose SDL as the input source when it appears. It is cross-platform and is the source PCSX2 documents as preferred for most controllers.
- Open Controller Port 1. Work on Port 1 for the driver. Do not begin with Port 2 unless you are intentionally configuring a second player.
- Run Automatic Mapping. Choose the detected controller in the automatic-mapping control if that option is offered. PCSX2 will fill the virtual DualShock-style controls from the device’s reported layout.
- Check every assignment. Automatic mapping can produce a usable result while still placing one or more buttons, triggers or axes incorrectly. Press each physical control and confirm that the highlighted virtual control is the one you intend.
- Remap exceptions manually. Select a virtual button or axis, then press the physical button or move the stick that should operate it. Repeat for every incorrect assignment. If automatic mapping is unavailable for your device, perform the entire map this way.
- Keep the mapping tied to Port 1. Start the game only after the first-port assignments are complete. If the game sees no player-one input, return to this page and check that the controller is assigned to Port 1 rather than merely detected by the operating system.
PCSX2’s instructions for automatic and manual mapping are in the official controller documentation. The documentation does not establish a Midnight Club 3-specific preset, so do not expect a named game profile to appear automatically.

What to map from the original PS2 layout
The PS2 manual scan labels the controls that the emulator is reproducing. Use those names when the PCSX2 screen asks for a virtual control. The table identifies the console function; it does not claim a particular keyboard arrangement or a title-specific PC preset.
| Virtual PS2 control | Physical control to assign | Mapping note |
|---|---|---|
| Directional buttons (Up, Down, Left, Right) | D-pad or a chosen digital hat | Assign each direction separately and test diagonals if your pad supports them. |
| Face buttons (Triangle, Circle, Cross, Square) | The four primary action buttons | Use the labels shown by PCSX2 rather than relying on the letters printed on a differently branded pad. |
| Left and right shoulder buttons | L1 and R1 | These are separate digital shoulder inputs. |
| Left and right analog triggers | L2 and R2 | Assign the trigger controls individually; a controller that reports them as one shared axis may need a different input mode. |
| Start and Select | Menu/option buttons on the controller | They are distinct virtual buttons and must not be left unassigned if you need to pause or navigate. |
| Left analog stick | Left stick horizontal and vertical axes | Map both axes, then check that pushing up moves the virtual stick up rather than down. |
| Right analog stick | Right stick horizontal and vertical axes | Map both axes separately from the left stick. |
| Analog mode | Any optional control your pad can use for the PS2 Analog button | The manual labels an Analog mode; if PCSX2 exposes that virtual button, assign it so you can switch the emulated pad’s mode when a game requires it. |
The manual scan is available at Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition’s PS2 manual. It identifies the original controls, but it does not provide a modern PC controller profile.

When SDL gives scrambled or dead inputs on Windows
Some Windows devices are detected through SDL but report button order or axis events incorrectly. In that situation, PCSX2 documents SDL Raw Input as a troubleshooting option. Raw Input changes how the events are received; it is not a shortcut around mapping.
- Return to Settings > Controllers and choose SDL Raw Input for the Windows input source.
- Clear the existing Port 1 mapping so assignments from the ordinary SDL mode do not remain mixed with the new events.
- Map every virtual PS2 control manually by selecting it and pressing or moving the intended physical control.
- Test the directions, both sticks, shoulders, triggers, Start, Select and the face buttons before launching the game.
Automatic Mapping is not expected to work properly in SDL Raw Input mode, so a manual pass is required. If Raw Input makes the device worse, switch back to SDL and remap there instead; the correct choice depends on how that particular controller exposes its events to Windows.
Use XInput when SDL is not suitable
On Windows, XInput is the practical backup for an XInput-compliant controller. PCSX2’s FAQ says Windows users receive XInput bindings that work automatically with Xbox One and other XInput controllers. That describes the input protocol, not a promise that every third-party pad will behave identically.

- Open Settings > Controllers.
- Select XInput as the source.
- Choose the detected controller for Port 1, using automatic mapping if PCSX2 offers it.
- Inspect the resulting assignment and manually correct any button, trigger or axis that is in the wrong place.
If the same controller has an input-mode switch, change the hardware to its XInput mode before reconnecting it. A device that is only presenting DirectInput events will not become XInput-compatible merely because XInput is selected in PCSX2.

DirectInput can help with an older Windows controller or a device that exposes no usable SDL or XInput path. PCSX2 describes it as generally the least reliable option and notes that it has no automatic mapping. Select it only after the other sources fail.
- Choose DirectInput on the Controllers page.
- Assign Port 1 manually, one virtual control at a time.
- Pay particular attention to shared trigger axes, reversed stick directions and duplicated button events.
- Retest after changing any hardware mode or reconnecting the pad, because Windows can enumerate the device differently.
If a controller works in DirectInput but has a poor layout, that is a limitation of the device’s reported inputs rather than evidence of a Midnight Club 3-specific configuration problem.
Verify the mapping before starting a race
Current PCSX2 Qt and Big Picture interfaces do not include an input tester. The documented alternative is the PS2 Pad Test homebrew application, which displays DualShock 2 inputs as you press the mapped controls.
Run PS2 Pad Test through PCSX2 using the same Port 1 configuration, then exercise each button, both sticks and every direction. A test display that responds to the intended virtual control confirms that PCSX2 is receiving the mapping; it does not alter the game’s own control options. If you do not have the homebrew available, you can still perform a practical check from the game’s menus, but a silent menu does not tell you which unassigned control is at fault.

The controller is not listed
- Connect and power on the device before opening the Controllers page, then reopen the page if necessary.
- Try SDL first. If Windows recognizes the pad as XInput-compatible but SDL does not produce usable events, try XInput.
- For a device that only works through an older Windows API, try DirectInput and map it manually.
- On Linux or macOS, use SDL: PCSX2’s FAQ says it automatically detects and binds recognizable controllers through SDL, although individual device behavior can differ.
PCSX2’s FAQ is available at the PCSX2 FAQ on GitHub.
Buttons are swapped or a stick moves the wrong way
- Do not keep the automatic result if it is visibly wrong. Select the affected virtual control and press the intended physical button or move the intended axis.
- Check the left and right sticks independently; a correct-looking horizontal assignment can still have its vertical axis reversed.
- If the problem appears only under ordinary SDL on Windows, try SDL Raw Input, clear the old mapping and rebuild it manually.
The game ignores the controller
- Confirm that the pad is assigned to Controller Port 1, the normal player-one port.
- Verify that Start and the face buttons respond in a PS2 Pad Test or the game’s menus.
- Check that you did not configure Port 2 while expecting player one to use the device.
- If you changed input sources, rebuild the mapping for the newly selected source instead of assuming the previous source’s assignments carry over correctly.
Triggers or axes behave as one control
Some devices report both triggers on a shared axis or expose unusual axis names. Select each trigger or axis in PCSX2 and move only the physical control you want to assign. If the resulting events cannot be separated, try another input source or the controller’s alternate hardware mode; PCSX2 cannot create independent signals that the device does not expose.
Two controllers interfere with one another
Disconnect the second device while building Port 1, complete and test the first mapping, then configure Port 2 separately. Because the ports represent separate PS2 sockets, assigning the same physical device or ambiguous events to both can make it unclear which player is receiving input.

Linux and macOS considerations
PCSX2’s FAQ says recognizable controllers on Linux and macOS are automatically detected and bound through SDL. The same Port 1 and virtual-PS2 mapping principles apply: automatic detection is a convenience, not a game-specific profile, so inspect the assignment and correct it manually when necessary.

SDL Raw Input, XInput and DirectInput are Windows-oriented choices in the documented comparison. Do not look for those Windows troubleshooting paths on a non-Windows installation; use SDL and investigate the operating system’s own controller recognition if the device is absent.
What is and is not known about a Midnight Club 3 preset
The PCSX2 Wiki page for Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition records a historical Windows test using LilyPad 0.11.0. It does not establish that a current PCSX2 release needs LilyPad, nor does it guarantee present-day compatibility for every controller. Current PCSX2 documentation describes integrated controller configuration instead.
There is also no verified title-specific table in the available documentation that says, for example, which modern controller button must be assigned to every driving or menu action. The safe method is therefore to map the PS2 controls named by the emulator, launch the game, and adjust its own control options only after the emulator reports the intended virtual inputs.

- The controller is powered on and visible to the operating system.
- PCSX2 is configured through Settings > Controllers, using the current integrated interface.
- The device is assigned to Controller Port 1 for player one.
- SDL was tried first; XInput or DirectInput was selected only for a specific compatibility reason.
- Automatic Mapping was checked rather than trusted blindly.
- Every D-pad direction, face button, shoulder, trigger, Start, Select and both stick axes has an intentional assignment.
- SDL Raw Input was manually remapped if it was used on Windows.
- A PS2 Pad Test or the game’s menus confirms that the virtual controls respond as intended.
Once those checks pass, Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition is receiving a configured PS2 controller through PCSX2. Any remaining handling preference is then a game-control choice, not a missing PC driver or a requirement for the obsolete LilyPad plugin.
