To configure a controller in Kega Fusion, connect it before launching the emulator, then open Options → Set Config… → Controllers. Select Port 1, choose 3 Button Pad or 6 Button Pad, select your physical controller in the Use menu, click Define, and press each control as Fusion requests it.

This guide covers Genesis/Mega Drive, Master System, Game Gear, Sega CD, and 32X controller setup, plus the fixes for missing devices, swapped buttons, and non-working Player 2 input.

Before you begin

  • Install and launch Kega Fusion.
  • Connect a USB controller or pair a Bluetooth controller with your computer.
  • Confirm that Windows, macOS, or Linux detects the controller before opening Fusion. Older Fusion builds may depend on the operating system exposing a compatible joystick interface.
  • Use a game image and any required BIOS files only if you are legally entitled to use them.

Connecting the controller before launching Fusion is recommended. Setup guides report that a device connected after Fusion starts may not appear in the emulator’s Use list, although this is not an absolute requirement on every system.

Kega Fusion is a legacy Sega emulator commonly associated with the final Steve Snake release, version 3.64, which dates from 2010. Current download pages are not necessarily official, so be cautious with bundled or repackaged files.

Logitech G F310 Wired Gamepad Controller Console - Blue/Black
  • With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
  • The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.

Configure Player 1

  1. Start Fusion with the controller connected.
  2. Open Options from the menu bar.
  3. Select Set Config….
  4. Open the Controllers tab.
  5. Under the section for the system you are configuring, select Port 1.
  6. Choose 3 Button Pad for most Genesis/Mega Drive games, or 6 Button Pad for games that use X, Y, or Z.
  7. Open the adjacent Use selector and choose your detected keyboard or gamepad.
  8. Click Define.
  9. Press the physical control you want to use each time Fusion displays a prompt.
  10. Click OK when mapping is complete.

Fusion assigns controls sequentially. Depending on the selected pad, it will ask for directions, A, B, C, Start, and—on a six-button pad—X, Y, Z, and Mode. Press one control at a time and wait for the next prompt.

Choose the correct Genesis controller type

3 Button Pad

3 Button Pad is the best default for ordinary Genesis/Mega Drive games. It provides directional controls, A, B, C, and Start, matching the controller used by most titles.

6 Button Pad

Select 6 Button Pad when a game requires X, Y, Z, or Mode. Fighting games and other titles designed for the later six-button controller are the most likely to need it.

A six-button physical gamepad does not automatically make Fusion emulate a six-button Genesis controller. You must select 6 Button Pad in Fusion and map the additional inputs. Conversely, selecting six-button mode unnecessarily can create input or compatibility problems in some games. Start with three-button mode and change only when the game needs the extra controls.

Suggested modern controller layout

Fusion control Suggested physical control
Up, Down, Left, Right D-pad, or left analog stick as a fallback
A Lower face button, such as Xbox A or PlayStation Cross
B Right face button, such as Xbox B or PlayStation Circle
C Left face button, such as Xbox X or PlayStation Square
Start Start or Menu button
X, Y, Z Remaining face or shoulder buttons on a six-button pad
Mode An unused face, shoulder, or auxiliary button

These are only suggested positions. Fusion maps the physical controls you press during Define; it does not automatically interpret Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo button labels as Genesis A, B, or C. A D-pad generally feels more precise for Genesis games, while the analog stick is a practical fallback.

Configure Player 2

  1. Open Options → Set Config… → Controllers.
  2. Select Port 2.
  3. Choose the appropriate controller type.
  4. Select the second physical controller from Use.
  5. Click Define and map it independently.
  6. Click OK, then test it in a game that supports two players.

Port 1 corresponds to Player 1 and Port 2 to Player 2. Connecting a second controller alone is not enough: the game must support multiplayer, and its own title screen or options menu may require multiplayer to be enabled.

Fusion also supports specialist multiplayer hardware such as the Sega TeamPlayer, EA 4-Way-Play, and J-Cart. Use these modes only with games designed for the relevant hardware. Selecting a multitap for an ordinary game can prevent normal controller input from working properly, and four connected USB controllers do not guarantee four-player support.

Do not assume that one controller selection applies identically to every Sega system. Configure the section corresponding to the game you are launching.

  • 【Simple USB Plug and Play】If your program or application accepts USB controller input, this classic game controller do not need install drivers or patches. 1.5 meter external cable(approx. 5 ft. Long). Notice: Please download the game emulator first before start the games, and then you must manually set the buttons and directionals within the emulator you're using, and the controller not automatically assigns buttons/directional axes. If on the Steam platform, you need to first enable Steam's "Universal Controller Configuration Support" and then restart Steam. After entering the game, you also need to manually bind key positions in the game
  • 【High Sensitivity without Delay】Super sensitive buttons for precision control: 6 fire buttons, a 'Start' button and a 'Select' button, motion control cross. Play your favorite old school games with classic retro feel. Fits perfectly in the hand and also perfect for two player action.Note: Not applicable to Switch/PS games. Not Compatible with TV/ TV Box, third Mini Games Box and Tesla Model 3
  • 【Supported Game Emulators】The game controller works with most emulators. Download any emulator you wish to download and use from Google and do the same with ROMS. Notice:Third party controller, not original controller. But it works phenomenal with the Raspberry Pi game emulation and so on
  • 【Product Service】If you have any problem during use, send message to us and we will help you to solve the problem soon
  • Genesis/32X: Standard three-button and six-button pads, Sega Mouse, Menacer, Konami Justifier, TeamPlayer, EA 4-Way-Play, and other specialist devices.
  • Master System/Game Gear: System-specific two-button controls and supported accessories such as paddle or light-phaser-related inputs.
  • Sega CD/Mega CD: Usually uses the controller configuration of the underlying console, although individual games may require a mouse or light-gun device.

For a normal gamepad, restore the port to a standard three-button or six-button pad rather than leaving a mouse, light gun, paddle, or multitap selected.

Test the configuration

  1. For a Genesis or 32X title, open File → Load Genesis/32X ROM.
  2. Move through the game’s title screen or menu with the directional controls.
  3. Test A, B, C, and Start.
  4. If the game uses a six-button controller, test X, Y, Z, and Mode.
  5. Test Player 2 only in a supported multiplayer game.

If input fails, return to Options → Set Config… → Controllers and inspect the selected port, controller type, and device before assuming the gamepad is defective.

Fix common controller problems

The controller does not appear in the Use list

  1. Close Fusion.
  2. Connect the USB controller or pair the Bluetooth controller.
  3. Confirm that the operating system detects it.
  4. If it has a mode switch, try its standard PC, XInput, or compatible joystick mode.
  5. Launch Fusion again and reopen Options → Set Config… → Controllers.

If the device is still missing, the problem is probably below Fusion’s configuration layer: pairing, drivers, controller mode, or operating-system compatibility. Installing a random driver is not a reliable universal fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fusion sees the controller, but buttons do nothing

  • Check that the intended device is selected under Use.
  • Make sure the controller is assigned to Port 1 when testing Player 1.
  • Disconnect unused controllers and virtual input devices temporarily.
  • Check that a mouse, light gun, or multitap has not been selected accidentally.
  • Run Define again from the beginning and press only the control requested by the current prompt.
  • Try a normal 3 Button Pad or 6 Button Pad profile.

The controls are swapped

This is normally a mapping issue. Return to the Controllers tab, choose the correct port and device, click Define, and press the physical buttons in the order Fusion requests them. Do not assume that a controller’s printed A, B, X, and Y labels match Genesis A, B, and C.

Six-button controls are unavailable

Confirm both that Fusion is set to 6 Button Pad and that the physical controller exposes enough distinct buttons for X, Y, and Z. If the game still behaves incorrectly, test it with 3 Button Pad; some games expect the standard controller.

Start or Mode is unavailable

Map the prompt to an unused face, shoulder, Menu, or auxiliary button. Mode is part of the six-button input set, but not every game uses it.

Player 2 does not work

Verify that the game supports two players, the second controller is assigned to Port 2, the correct physical device is selected, and multiplayer is enabled in the game. Also check that a multitap mode has not been selected accidentally.

A mouse or light-gun game breaks ordinary controls

Fusion supports specialist peripherals, but they replace normal pad behavior for the relevant port. Reopen the controller settings and restore the port to the appropriate standard pad when returning to an ordinary game.

Choosing a controller for Fusion

A standard wired PC gamepad is usually the simplest choice for Windows users, particularly if the operating system already recognizes it. Its face-button labels will not match Genesis A/B/C automatically, but manual mapping solves that problem.

A dedicated six-button Genesis-style controller is a better fit for authentic ergonomics and fighting games. The 8BitDo M30 is one example of this type; its USB, Bluetooth, and 2.4 GHz variants should not be treated as identical because connection methods and PC modes differ. Retro-Bit also sells Genesis/Mega Drive-style controllers, but compatibility depends on the specific model and its selected input mode. Check the manufacturer’s current product information before buying.

Do not buy a controller merely because it has six face buttons. Fusion still requires the correct emulated controller type and a manual mapping pass, and a controller advertised for another console or mobile device is not guaranteed to work with the PC build.

Is Kega Fusion still the right emulator?

Fusion remains useful if you want its familiar, portable interface or already have a working setup. However, its commonly distributed final Steve Snake build is version 3.64 from 2010, so modern operating-system, driver, display, and input issues are possible.

If Fusion cannot detect your controller after operating-system troubleshooting, a maintained alternative such as RetroArch with a Genesis/Mega Drive core, BlastEm, or BizHawk may offer newer input handling. That is a reason to consider changing emulator—not evidence that every alternative will work identically on your computer.

Quick reference

Connect controller → launch Fusion → Options → Set Config… → Controllers → choose Port 1 → choose 3 Button Pad or 6 Button Pad → select the device under Use → Define → map every prompt → OK → load a game and test.
