Enable Apache’s HTTP cache with mod_cache, add the persistent disk backend mod_cache_disk, and define a writable cache directory. A minimal disk configuration uses CacheRoot, CacheEnable disk /, CacheDirLevels 2, and CacheDirLength 1. Then make sure origin headers mark only public, repeatable responses as cacheable, reload Apache, and verify a first-request X-Cache: MISS becomes HIT on a fresh repeat. Caching private, authorization-dependent, or session-specific pages can disclose one user’s data to another, so policy and header review are as important as the directives.

What Apache content caching does
Apache’s HTTP-aware cache is supplied by mod_cache. It decides whether a response may be stored, whether an existing object is fresh, and whether the object can be reused or must be revalidated. mod_cache_disk adds a filesystem-backed storage provider so cached headers and response bodies survive beyond the request that created them.

Cache-Control, Expires, Last-Modified, ETag, and Vary determine freshness, validation, and which request variants are distinct. A response that is private, explicitly non-cacheable, expired, or varied by request headers can legitimately produce a MISS every time.
For a game site, suitable first candidates are public patch manifests, versioned JavaScript or CSS, image files, and non-personalized news or leaderboard pages. Account pages, inventory screens, purchase flows, moderation tools, and any response containing a player’s session data should remain outside a shared cache unless you have designed and tested a complete private-cache policy.

Prerequisites and safety checks
Confirm the modules are available
Make sure the Apache installation has loaded both mod_cache and mod_cache_disk. Module package names and loading syntax differ between Linux distributions, so use the module mechanism supplied by your distribution and verify the loaded-module list before changing cache directives. If the disk module is absent, Apache cannot use CacheEnable disk.
Choose storage outside the document root
Use a dedicated directory such as /var/cache/apache/, not a directory served as web content. The directory must exist, be writable by the Apache service account, and have permissions that do not grant unrelated users access. Leave enough free space for the expected cache and for normal operating-system activity; a full filesystem can turn a cache problem into an application outage.
Decide what “public” means for your application
Before enabling a broad path such as /, identify responses that contain authorization decisions, cookies, user identifiers, account balances, private messages, or other per-user state. A shared cache namespace must never serve such content to a different request unless the complete variation and privacy rules are correct. Start with a narrow public path when the application mixes public and private URLs.
Minimal disk-cache configuration
Add the following directives in the Apache configuration context permitted by your distribution. The official disk-cache setup pattern uses these values:
# Ensure mod_cache and mod_cache_disk are loaded first.
CacheRoot "/var/cache/apache/"
CacheEnable disk /
CacheDirLevels 2
CacheDirLength 1
# Temporary diagnostics while validating behavior.
CacheHeader on
# Uncomment when every cache hit must pass normal request processing.
# CacheQuickHandler off
What each directive controls
| Directive | Purpose | Operational point |
|---|---|---|
CacheRoot |
Filesystem root for the disk cache. | It must name a valid, writable directory. Omitting it causes a configuration-processing error for the disk backend. |
CacheEnable disk / |
Enables the disk provider for URLs below the specified path. | Replace / with a narrower public path if the whole site is not safe to cache. |
CacheDirLevels 2 |
Sets two directory levels in the hashed cache layout. | More levels distribute files across more directories but add filesystem entries. |
CacheDirLength 1 |
Sets the number of hash characters used at each directory level. | One character permits at most 64 subdirectories per level; with two levels, up to 4,096 leaf directories can be created. |
CacheHeader on |
Adds cache-status information to responses for troubleshooting. | Disable it after validation if exposing cache state is undesirable. |
CacheQuickHandler off |
Stops cache hits from being delivered by the early quick-handler path. | Use it when authorization, access controls, personalization, includes, or other normal request phases must run. |
The disk backend hashes URLs and stores metadata and content separately; installations commonly show .header and .data files beneath the cache root. Do not edit those files manually. Treat the directory as disposable managed state that can be purged and rebuilt from the origin.

Configure Apache step by step
1. Load and verify the cache modules
Use the module-loading tools and package names provided by your Linux distribution to enable mod_cache and mod_cache_disk. Check Apache’s loaded-module output or startup log to confirm both are active. A configuration that contains cache directives but lacks the corresponding modules will fail validation or ignore the intended backend.

2. Create and protect the cache directory
- Create the chosen
CacheRootpath if it does not already exist. - Assign ownership to the account used by the Apache worker or service.
- Allow that account to create and remove files while denying write access to unrelated users.
- Keep the directory outside every document root and check the filesystem’s free-space and inode availability.
The exact service account and permission commands vary by distribution and hardening policy. Confirm them from the local service definition rather than assuming a universal account name.
3. Add the directives in the active server configuration
Place the baseline directives in the server or virtual-host configuration that receives the requests you intend to cache. Ensure no later include overrides the provider, root, or path. If public and private traffic share a virtual host, scope CacheEnable to a public location instead of enabling it globally.
4. Choose the request-processing path
CacheQuickHandler is on by default. With it enabled, a fresh cache hit can be returned before most request processing, which minimizes overhead but can circumvent authorization and access-control checks. Set CacheQuickHandler off when every request must run those checks, when responses are personalized, or when modules such as mod_include must execute. The normal path costs more processing time, so apply it deliberately and measure the resulting workload.
5. Test before reloading
Run the configuration-test command supplied by your distribution before reloading or restarting Apache. Correct any syntax, module, path, or permission error first. Then reload or restart through the distribution’s normal service tooling. A successful reload proves only that Apache accepted the configuration; it does not prove that a response is cacheable.

Set freshness and privacy with HTTP headers
Use explicit freshness for stable public content
Origin responses should express their actual policy. Cache-Control: public identifies content that may be shared; max-age defines how long it remains fresh. Expires supplies an HTTP-date freshness limit for clients and intermediaries that use it. For a versioned game asset, a long lifetime can be appropriate when changing the URL whenever the bytes change. For frequently updated announcements, choose a shorter lifetime or rely on validators.
Use validators for revalidation
ETag and Last-Modified let Apache ask the origin whether a stale object changed instead of downloading a new body unconditionally. A successful validator exchange can produce an X-Cache: REVALIDATE result while retaining the cached representation. Validators must describe the same representation that the cache stores; changing content without changing its validator can leave clients with incorrect data.
Keep private and prohibited responses out
Cache-Control: private marks a response as unsuitable for shared caching. no-store instructs caches not to retain it, while no-cache requires validation before reuse rather than meaning “never store” in every implementation. Responses tied to authorization, sessions, user identity, or sensitive state should use the directive that matches your privacy requirement and should be tested with real request headers.
Cookies require special care. A response that sets or depends on user-specific cookies can be unsafe in a shared namespace unless the cache policy deliberately varies or bypasses it. Do not assume that placing a private page below a generally enabled path makes it safe; inspect the actual response headers and request conditions.
Account for negotiated variants
The Vary header tells the cache which request headers select different representations. Language, compression, device, or other negotiated variants must be named accurately so one variant is not served to an incompatible request. An overly broad Vary value can reduce hit rates, but removing a required field is a correctness and privacy defect.

Understand minimum expiry and stale-on-error options
CacheMinExpire can impose a minimum retention only when the origin has not supplied a valid expiry. It should not override a deliberate origin policy. CacheStaleOnError on allows stale cached data to be returned when the backend produces a 5xx response and stale content is available. Enable it only for content where serving an older version is preferable to showing an error, and document that trade-off for your operations team.
Verify that the cache is working
Perform a controlled first and second request
- Choose a URL that is public, repeatable, and expected to be cacheable.
- Request headers without downloading the body, for example with
curl -I https://example.invalid/public-file, or capture the complete response withcurl -sD - -o /dev/null https://example.invalid/public-file. - With
CacheHeader on, record the first response. A cacheable object commonly reportsX-Cache: MISSwhile Apache obtains and stores it. - Repeat the identical request while the object is fresh. A successful reuse should report
X-Cache: HIT. - After the freshness lifetime expires, repeat the request and inspect whether Apache reports
REVALIDATEand whether the origin’s validators confirm that the object is unchanged.
Inspect the complete response, not just the cache-status line. A MISS can be correct when the origin sent private, no-store, an expired lifetime, a required Vary difference, or an authorization condition. Compare requests byte for byte, including headers that participate in variation, and check Apache logs for bypass or storage errors.
Turn diagnostics off after testing
CacheHeader on is useful while establishing behavior but reveals internal cache state to clients. Set it back to off or remove the temporary directive after troubleshooting if that information is not part of your operational interface. Continue observing logs and application metrics rather than depending on a public diagnostic header.

| Observed condition | Likely explanation | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Every request is a MISS | The response is not cacheable, expires immediately, or the cache is bypassed. | Review Cache-Control, Expires, cookies, authorization, Vary, and the active CacheEnable path. |
| Apache fails to reload | A module is missing, CacheRoot is invalid, or a directive is in the wrong context. |
Run the distribution’s config test and read the exact startup error; verify module loading and directory existence. |
| Cache files never appear | The service account cannot write the root, or no response qualifies for storage. | Check ownership, mode bits, filesystem read-only status, free space, and the response headers. |
| A HIT bypasses access control | The default quick-handler path served it before normal authorization. | Set CacheQuickHandler off where authorization or other per-request processing is mandatory. |
| Variants collide or hit rate is low | The origin’s Vary policy does not match actual negotiation, or requests differ in a varying header. |
Compare request headers and correct the origin’s Vary value. |
| Requests proceed without cache after an error | The disk cache encountered an I/O problem and stood down. | Inspect Apache and filesystem logs, then verify the cache volume and permissions. Apache can continue serving as if no cache were present. |
Manage disk size, files, and invalidation
Do not expect mod_cache_disk to enforce a quota
mod_cache_disk does not regulate disk consumption by itself. A busy game download site can accumulate many objects and consume either space or inodes even when individual files are small. Monitor the filesystem containing CacheRoot with the same alerting used for other production volumes.
Use htcacheclean for maintenance
Apache documents htcacheclean for listing cached URLs, removing entries, and maintaining size or inode limits. Run it according to the tool’s documented scheduling and limit model, and test its path and ownership settings against a non-production cache before automating deletion. Keep monitoring in place because a cleaner configured for capacity does not replace filesystem alerts.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Purge after deployments that invalidate old content
Remove or rotate affected cache entries when a deployment makes previously stored content unsafe or incorrect. Versioned asset URLs are usually safer than broad cache ignores: publishing a new filename lets old objects age out while clients request the new representation. Purge pages or manifests whose meaning changed immediately, especially when they direct clients to incompatible game data.
Recover from a damaged cache
- Stop or isolate the cleaner and identify whether the problem is permissions, a full volume, filesystem errors, or a failed mount.
- Restore write access and available space for the Apache service account.
- If entries are corrupt or the directory is being rebuilt, stop Apache or follow your platform’s safe-maintenance procedure before removing the affected cache contents.
- Start or reload Apache, perform a controlled MISS followed by a HIT, and watch logs for renewed I/O failures.
Because cache data is derivative, deleting it should not delete origin content. Never place the application’s only copy of private or user-generated data under CacheRoot.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoosing a cache design
| Decision axis | Disk-backed Apache cache | Other cache arrangements |
|---|---|---|
| Storage backend | Filesystem objects managed by mod_cache_disk. |
A shared-object or external cache may keep entries in memory or a separate service; its capacity and failure behavior must be evaluated independently. |
| Request-processing phase | Quick-handler hits are fastest but can bypass authorization; disabling the quick handler preserves normal phases. | An arrangement integrated later in request processing can retain more application checks at the cost of additional work. |
| Cacheability policy | Best for public, repeatable responses whose HTTP headers accurately describe freshness and variation. | Private or personalized data generally needs a user-scoped cache or no shared cache at all. |
| Freshness strategy | Origin Cache-Control, Expires, validators, and Vary control reuse; Apache options can supply limited defaults. |
An external layer may add its own TTL and purge controls, which must remain consistent with origin validators. |
| Invalidation | Expire naturally, revalidate, use htcacheclean, or remove selected cache contents during deployment. |
Shared systems may provide centralized purge APIs; verify that every node observes the invalidation. |
| Capacity budget | You must budget both bytes and inodes because the disk backend has no built-in size limit. | Memory or remote stores trade filesystem pressure for their own eviction, network, and availability constraints. |
There is no universal performance percentage for Apache caching on a generic Linux server. The useful measurement is your workload: origin response time, cache-hit ratio, filesystem latency, CPU cost with and without the quick handler, and the effect of revalidation. Benchmark public game assets and generated pages under representative concurrency instead of applying a promised speedup.

Practical baseline for a game site
For a public game portal, begin with a dedicated location containing versioned static assets and public, non-personalized documents. Give those responses explicit freshness and validators. Keep account, session, purchase, moderation, and player-specific pages outside the shared cache. Validate the narrow location first, then expand only when response headers and authorization behavior have been observed under real requests. This staged approach limits the blast radius of a mistaken rule while still allowing high-volume public files to be served from local disk.
Once behavior is correct, measure hit rate and origin load over a representative release cycle. A cache that returns HITs but serves stale manifests, wrong language variants, or unauthorized pages is not a successful optimization. Correctness, privacy, and an operable cleanup process must remain the acceptance criteria.
