Current version and compatibility
Version discipline matters more than usual with a large Forge pack. The current files page lists Prehistoric World 2 – MC 1.20.1 – 7.1.0, uploaded October 8, 2026, with Forge as the loader. Select Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge in your launcher; do not combine files from another Minecraft version or loader.

Pack files, dependencies and launcher labels can change. Read the file page for the release you are installing and keep a copy of the exact ZIP and version number with your world backup.
What you need before installing
- A legitimate Minecraft Java Edition installation that can run version 1.20.1.
- A launcher that can import CurseForge modpacks, such as Prism Launcher, Modrinth App or CurseForge App.
- A 64-bit Java 17-or-newer runtime. If your launcher bundles Java, verify that the profile actually selects Java 17+.

Memory allocation is hardware-dependent. Start with the launcher’s normal allocation for a large modpack, watch for out-of-memory errors or excessive swapping, and adjust gradually rather than assigning all system RAM. Leave memory for the operating system, the launcher and any voice or recording software you use alongside Minecraft.
How to install the pack
- Install or update a supported launcher. Install Prism Launcher, Modrinth App or CurseForge App from its official distribution channel. Sign in with the account that owns Minecraft Java Edition if the launcher requires authentication.
- Download the pack ZIP. On the Prehistoric World 2 project page, open the files for the 1.20.1 Forge release and download the 7.1.0 ZIP. Keep the filename unchanged so you can identify the release later.

- Set memory and resolution. Use the instance-specific memory controls rather than changing every Minecraft profile. Increase allocation only if logs show memory pressure and your computer has spare RAM; reducing render distance and visual effects can be preferable on a lower-memory system.
- Launch a test world. Start the game without copying an old save into the new instance. Reach the title screen, create a temporary world and verify that the quest-book item or interface is present and that the world loads without a Forge error.
- Back up before real play. Exit the game, copy the test result and then create a clean backup of any existing world before opening it with the new profile. Store the backup outside the instance directory.
If the launcher imports the wrong version
Stop before creating or opening a permanent world. Edit the instance and select Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge, or delete the incorrect instance and import the correct file again. A profile that says 1.20.2, 1.19.x, Fabric or another loader is not a safe substitute simply because the launcher starts.

If the game stops during loading
- Confirm the Java executable is 17 or newer and 64-bit.
- Check that the profile is Forge for 1.20.1, not a manually assembled loader.
- Retry dependency downloads if the launcher reports a missing library or checksum failure.
- Temporarily remove extra shaders, resource packs or client-side additions you added yourself; test the unmodified pack first.
- Read the first clear error in the launcher log rather than the final cascade of generic crash messages.
How progression and quests work
The published project information establishes the broad progression: explore, locate fossils, revive extinct creatures and use the quest system to guide advancement. It does not publish the installed quest book’s chapter names, exact objectives, reward table or universal unlock order. Those details can change between releases, so the quest book inside your 7.1.0 instance is the source of truth.

A reliable quest workflow
- Read every available task in the opening section and note which objectives are exploration-based, which require an item and which require a crafted block or machine.
- Complete low-risk discovery tasks while scouting a base location. Mark unusual terrain, fossil sites and structures so another player can find them later.
- Keep one copy of quest-critical materials in a protected storage area. Turning in an item, consuming a component or moving a world-specific artifact can be difficult to undo.
- Follow dependency lines before starting a large construction project. The next unlock may change which machines, habitats or resources are most efficient.
- Check the reward screen after each completion and record unique items in a written checklist. This avoids repeating an objective because a reward was collected but its purpose was forgotten.
- After a major unlock, make a manual world backup. If an update or a failed experiment damages progression, you can return to a known state.
Why a quest list cannot be supplied here
A fixed list would be misleading because the authoritative pages do not state chapter names, objective text or rewards, and those values belong to the installed release. If a guide, video or server post shows a different sequence, compare its Minecraft version, pack version and quest-book screenshots with your own before following it.
Reviving dinosaurs: what the pack confirms and how to plan
The pack’s central premise is the recovery of extinct creatures from ancient fossils. The available project description does not name a universal fossil block, machine, DNA item, incubation time or species roster, so those mechanics should be learned from the quest book and the recipes visible in your release rather than guessed from another dinosaur mod.
Practical revival routine
- Explore methodically. Carry sufficient food, tools, light and storage, then mark the coordinates of fossil finds and any structure that appears connected to progression.
- Secure the find. Move valuable fossils into protected storage before experimenting with processing recipes. Keep a backup copy of rare materials when the game allows it.

Do not assume that every fossil produces a dinosaur immediately. Some progression systems use several processing stages, and the pack’s public description does not specify which stages exist. Let the installed recipe viewer and quest dependencies answer that question.

Running Prehistoric World 2 with friends
The project lists multiplayer as a category and a separate 1.0 GB Prehistoric World 2 (Server Pack) — Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge is offered with the release. That server package is the appropriate starting point for a dedicated installation; a client ZIP can contain files that are unnecessary or unsuitable for a server.

- Exit Minecraft and stop the server cleanly if the world is multiplayer.
- Copy the entire world save to a dated backup folder. Include server configuration and whitelist files when relevant.
- Install the new pack release as a separate instance instead of overwriting the working profile.
- Launch the new instance once with a temporary world to verify Java, Forge and dependency loading.
- Copy the backup into the new profile only after the test succeeds.
- Enter the copied world, check quests, storage, creature areas and important machines, then play from the new profile.
- If anything is missing or broken, stop and return to the old profile and backup. Do not keep saving over the only copy.

How to keep a useful pack record
Large modpacks become easier to maintain when you record a few facts outside the game. Note the release number, Minecraft version, Forge version, Java path, launcher instance name and the date of each backup. For a shared server, add the server-pack filename, operator, backup location and the names of players who have access.

Keep a short expedition log with coordinates for fossil sites, structures, laboratories and creature enclosures. Where can I find the exact dinosaur species and quest rewards?
