Use OpenSSH’s ~/.ssh/config file to turn long connection commands into readable aliases, and use ssh -o Option=value for a temporary override. A profile can select a hostname, account, port, key, jump host, forwarding rule, and host-key policy; the effective result depends on command-line precedence and the order of matching configuration blocks.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
Choose between a one-off option and a saved profile
OpenSSH accepts the same option syntax in two places. A command-line override is useful for a single test or an emergency connection:

For a connection you use repeatedly, put the settings in your per-user configuration file, ~/.ssh/config, then connect with the name in its Host line. This keeps ports, usernames, keys, proxies, and forwarding rules out of shell history and makes the intended connection easier to audit.
| Method | Best for | Example | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
-o Option=value |
A temporary change or a quick diagnostic | ssh -o Port=2222 host |
Must be retyped and is easy to mistype |
~/.ssh/config |
Repeatable aliases and groups of hosts | ssh work-server |
Requires correct matching, ordering, and file permissions |
/etc/ssh/ssh_config |
System-wide defaults supplied by an administrator | Applied when the user file does not provide a value | May be outside your control and affects multiple users |
OpenSSH reads command-line options first, then the user file, then the system-wide file. For each individual parameter, the first value obtained is used unless the manual specifies an exception. That rule is why the position of a host block matters.

Create a useful alias in ~/.ssh/config
Create the .ssh directory and the config file in your local home directory if they do not already exist. The file must not be writable by other users; apply owner-only permissions appropriate to your operating system. Private identity files should receive similarly restrictive permissions. On a managed computer, an administrator may also set defaults in /etc/ssh/ssh_config; your per-user file is the place to add personal aliases without changing settings for everyone.
A minimal work-server profile looks like this:
Host work-server
HostName server.example.com
User alice
Port 2222
IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_ed25519_work
IdentitiesOnly yes
Now run:
ssh work-server
Host is the local alias or matching pattern. HostName is the real DNS name or IP address sent to the SSH client. The other lines select the remote account, TCP port, private key, and authentication behavior.
Configuration entries are keyword-and-argument pairs. Keywords are case-insensitive, while values are case-sensitive. If an argument contains spaces, quote it according to the configuration syntax. Keep indentation consistent for readability; OpenSSH treats the leading whitespace as presentation rather than a separate nesting language.
Core options and when to use them
| Option | What it controls | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
Host |
Starts a conditional block whose settings apply to matching names or patterns | Create aliases, groups, and exceptions |
HostName |
The actual hostname or IP address to contact | Use a short nickname without changing DNS |
User |
The remote login account | Connect as a service account or a different administrator |
Port |
The remote SSH TCP port; OpenSSH documents 22 as the default | Reach a service listening on a nonstandard port |
IdentityFile |
A private identity file used for authentication | Select a work, personal, or project-specific key |
IdentitiesOnly yes |
Restricts authentication to identities configured in files or on the command line, even when an agent offers additional keys | Prevent the wrong agent key from being tried first |
Include |
Loads additional configuration files; wildcard paths are expanded and processed lexically | Split a large configuration into maintainable files |
You can specify more than one IdentityFile. OpenSSH tries the configured identity files in sequence. This is useful when a host accepts several possible keys, but use IdentitiesOnly yes when you need to prevent an SSH agent from adding unrelated identities to the negotiation. The private key path is local; it does not identify a file that must exist on the server.
Control scope with patterns, defaults, and ordering
Use specific blocks before broad defaults
A pattern such as Host *.example.com can apply a shared default to a group. A Host * block applies defaults broadly. Put host-specific declarations before those wildcard blocks:
Host work-server
HostName server.example.com
User alice
Port 2222
IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_ed25519_work
IdentitiesOnly yes
Host *.example.com
User defaultuser
IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_ed25519_default
Host *
ServerAliveInterval 60
If the same parameter is encountered in a matching block and then again in a later matching block, the first obtained value remains effective. A later Host * line therefore cannot generally replace a value already selected by Host work-server. This is different from a last-line-wins configuration language. The same principle applies across included files, because included fragments are processed in lexical order.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallUse negated patterns for exceptions
Patterns support wildcards and negation. For example, this block covers most hosts in a domain but excludes one legacy system:
Host *.example.com !legacy.example.com
User alice
The pattern is evaluated against the name used for the connection. If you type an alias, make sure the alias is what the block is intended to match, or provide the matching alias explicitly. A negated pattern does not make a later broad block override an earlier value; it controls whether the block applies at all.
Separate configuration with Include
When one file becomes difficult to review, load fragments from a directory:
Include ~/.ssh/config.d/*
Wildcard include paths are expanded and processed in lexical order. Use predictable names, such as numeric prefixes, when one fragment must be read before another. Keep the most specific host declarations early enough that a broad default does not claim the parameter first. Included files should be protected with the same care as the main configuration.

Use Match for conditional rules
Host is the right tool for stable name-based groups. Match evaluates additional conditions, including host, originalhost, user, localuser, canonical, final, exec, and localnetwork. A conditional block can, for example, select a setting only when a particular local account or network is in use.
Match host internal.example.com user alice
IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_ed25519_work
Read the conditions carefully: they can change which values are obtained during parsing, and an exec condition may run a local command. CanonicalizeHostname can cause configuration files to be processed again with the canonical hostname, allowing a second matching pass to select additional settings. This can explain why a rule appears not to match on the first pass but affects the final result.
Connect through a bastion or jump host
Prefer ProxyJump for declarative jump routing
ProxyJump tells OpenSSH to connect to one or more intermediate hosts before reaching the destination. A simple profile is:
Host private-app
HostName app.internal.example.com
User appuser
ProxyJump bastion.example.com
The jump host can include its own account and port:
Host private-app
HostName app.internal.example.com
User appuser
ProxyJump [email protected]:2200
Multiple jump hosts are comma-separated:
Host private-app
ProxyJump first-bastion.example.com,second-bastion.example.com
The destination host’s configuration is not generally applied to the jump hosts. If a bastion needs a different username, port, or key, define a separate block for that bastion:
Host bastion.example.com
User jumpuser
Port 2200
IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_ed25519_bastion
IdentitiesOnly yes
Host private-app
HostName app.internal.example.com
User appuser
ProxyJump bastion.example.com
Use ProxyCommand when a command-based proxy is required
ProxyCommand runs a local command that must provide a connection to the target. A netcat-style HTTP CONNECT proxy can be expressed as:
Host proxied-server
HostName server.example.com
ProxyCommand /usr/bin/nc -X connect -x 192.0.2.0:8080 %h %p
ProxyJump is the higher-level, readable choice for SSH bastions. ProxyCommand is the lower-level option for an HTTP proxy, custom transport, or another program that speaks the required stream protocol. They compete: whichever is specified first prevents a later instance of the other from taking effect, so do not assume that adding a second directive will override the first. Shell metacharacters in commands must be quoted safely; the configuration manual places that responsibility on you.
Configure local and remote forwarding
Expose a remote service on a local port with LocalForward
LocalForward listens on the local side and sends traffic through the encrypted connection to a destination reachable from the remote side:
Host database-tunnel
HostName bastion.example.com
User tunneluser
LocalForward 127.0.0.1:15432 db.internal.example.com:5432
After ssh database-tunnel is connected, a program on the local machine can use 127.0.0.1:15432; the SSH server side attempts to reach db.internal.example.com:5432. The same directive can forward a local Unix socket when the platform and syntax support it. Bind to a loopback address when only the local machine should use the tunnel, rather than exposing the listener on every local interface.
Publish a remote listener with RemoteForward
RemoteForward creates a listener on the remote side and forwards connections back through the local side. With a fixed destination:

Host remote-callback
HostName server.example.com
User alice
RemoteForward 127.0.0.1:9000 127.0.0.1:9000
When no fixed destination is supplied, RemoteForward can act as a SOCKS proxy, allowing the remote listener to request connections through the local side. Treat remote listeners as exposed network services: bind deliberately, restrict access where possible, and remove the rule when it is no longer needed. Forwarding may also be limited by server-side policy, so a correct client profile cannot override an administrator’s restrictions.
Run a command after connecting with RemoteCommand
RemoteCommand runs a command on the remote machine after a successful connection:
Host logs-shell
HostName server.example.com
User alice
RemoteCommand tail -f /var/log/app.log
This changes the session’s purpose from a normal interactive shell to the configured command. Use it only on profiles where that behavior is intentional, and keep it separate from an alias intended for ordinary administration.
Use connection tokens safely
Several directives substitute tokens at connection time:
| Token | Value |
|---|---|
%h |
Remote hostname |
%p |
Remote port |
%r |
Remote username |
%n |
Original hostname supplied by the user |
%d |
Local home directory |
%C |
A hash of connection fields |
%j |
The configured ProxyJump value |
Tokens are particularly useful in ProxyCommand, where %h and %p pass the destination host and port to the proxy program. Because some directives construct shell commands, quote values containing shell metacharacters and do not insert untrusted text into a command without understanding how the local shell will parse it. Proxy directives accept only the token set supported by that directive; do not assume every token works everywhere. %n is useful when canonicalization changes the eventual hostname but a proxy still needs the name originally typed.
Keep host-key verification enabled
Custom connection profiles do not make host identity verification optional. StrictHostKeyChecking ask is the default behavior described by OpenSSH: new keys prompt for confirmation, while previously known keys are verified automatically. A changed key is treated as a warning that requires investigation.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Setting | Behavior | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
yes |
Requires manual addition of new host keys and refuses changed keys | Highly controlled environments where keys are provisioned separately |
accept-new |
Automatically adds new keys but still rejects changed keys | Environments that can safely trust first contact but must detect replacement |
ask |
Prompts before adding a new key and verifies known keys automatically | The documented default for interactive use |
Do not weaken host-key checking merely to silence a warning. A changed key can indicate a rebuilt server, a stale entry, or an active interception attempt; verify the replacement key through a trusted channel before accepting it. A convenient alias does not change the identity of the host you are connecting to.
Inspect the effective configuration before changing anything
Aliases fail most often because a pattern does not match, a broad block claims a value first, or a jump host is configured under the wrong name. Use this workflow:
- Print the resolved values. Run
ssh -G work-server. This displays the effective configuration generated for the alias when the installed OpenSSH client supports the option. - Trace the connection. Run
ssh -vvv work-server. The verbose output shows option parsing, name resolution, key selection, proxy setup, and host-key decisions. - Check the name that is matched. Confirm that the text after
sshmatches the intendedHostpattern. If hostname canonicalization is enabled, remember that a second parsing pass may occur. - Check permissions. Make sure
~/.ssh/configand private keys are not writable by other users. An SSH client may refuse to use files that are too permissive. - Check ordering. Move host-specific declarations above
Host *or other broad blocks. The first obtained value wins for each parameter. - Check the jump host separately. Give the bastion its own matching block when it needs a different account, port, or identity file.
For a one-time experiment, reproduce the suspected setting with -o rather than editing several blocks:
ssh -o HostName=server.example.com -o User=alice -o Port=2222 -o IdentityFile=~/.ssh/id_ed25519_work -o IdentitiesOnly=yes work-server
If the command-line version works but the alias does not, compare the output of ssh -G with the options you supplied and focus on matching and ordering. If a key is rejected, verify both the path and the account named by User; a valid private key for one account does not grant access to another.

Practical profile patterns
Separate keys for two environments
Host production
HostName prod.example.com
User deploy
IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_ed25519_prod
IdentitiesOnly yes
Host staging
HostName stage.example.com
User deploy
IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_ed25519_stage
IdentitiesOnly yes
The aliases make it difficult to send a staging key to production accidentally and make the selected identity visible in the profile.
Apply a shared port and account to a host group
Host *.lab.example.com
User researcher
Port 2200
IdentitiesOnly yes
Place any exception above this group block so its specific values are obtained first.
Keep a forwarding profile distinct from a normal shell profile
Host metrics-tunnel
HostName gateway.example.com
User tunnel
IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_ed25519_gateway
IdentitiesOnly yes
LocalForward 127.0.0.1:19090 metrics.internal.example.com:9090
Using a dedicated alias prevents a routine shell login from unexpectedly opening a tunnel and makes the purpose apparent in scripts and documentation.
Combine a bastion with a tunnel
Host private-db
HostName db.internal.example.com
User dbadmin
ProxyJump bastion.example.com
LocalForward 127.0.0.1:15432 db.internal.example.com:5432
Use this only when the local endpoint and the destination are deliberately chosen. The jump route controls how SSH reaches the database host; the forwarding rule controls which local program can reach a database service after the session is established.

Frequently asked configuration questions
How do I set a custom SSH port? Add Port 2222 inside the matching Host block, or use ssh -o Port=2222 host for one connection. The OpenSSH default is port 22.
How do I use a different username? Set User accountname in the profile. You can also write accountname@host on the command line, but putting the account in an alias avoids repeating it.
How do I select a private key? Add one or more IdentityFile lines. Add IdentitiesOnly yes if an SSH agent has other keys that should not be offered.
Why did my wildcard default override the setting I expected? It usually did not override it; the broad block was parsed first and supplied the first value. Move the specific block earlier and inspect the result with ssh -G.
Can one alias use a jump host with a different key? Yes. Give the bastion its own Host block with its account, port, and IdentityFile, then refer to that host in ProxyJump.
Should I use ProxyJump or ProxyCommand? Use ProxyJump for ordinary SSH bastions and chains. Use ProxyCommand when a local proxy program, such as netcat through an HTTP CONNECT proxy, is required.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Why does a host-key warning still appear when the alias works? The alias only changes connection parameters. OpenSSH still compares the destination’s key with the known-hosts record. Investigate a changed key through a trusted channel instead of disabling checking.
Bottom line
Put repeatable connection choices in ~/.ssh/config, use -o for temporary tests, and treat each Host block as a scoped profile. Start with HostName, User, Port, and IdentityFile; add IdentitiesOnly, ProxyJump, forwarding, or conditional rules only when their behavior is understood. Because OpenSSH keeps the first value it obtains for each parameter, deliberate ordering, explicit jump-host blocks, strict file permissions, safe quoting, and intact host-key verification are what make a short alias dependable rather than merely convenient.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the SSH client configuration file?
Per-user settings belong in ~/.ssh/config. System-wide defaults are normally in /etc/ssh/ssh_config and apply when the user file has not supplied a value.
What is the safest way to test an option before saving it?
Use ssh -o Option=value for a single connection, then compare ssh -G alias with the intended values before editing the profile.
Why is my IdentityFile ignored?
A previous matching block may already have supplied an identity, or an agent may be offering additional keys. Move the specific block earlier and use IdentitiesOnly yes when only configured files should be tried.
Can I include several SSH configuration files?
Yes. Include supports wildcard paths, which are expanded and processed lexically. Use predictable filenames when ordering matters.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Does ProxyJump automatically use the destination host’s settings for the bastion?
No. Configure the bastion explicitly if it needs a different user, port, or key.
What should I do when a host key changes?
Stop and verify the replacement key through a trusted channel. Do not weaken StrictHostKeyChecking just to suppress the warning.
The Bottom Line
Use ~/.ssh/config for dependable, reusable SSH profiles and ssh -o for one-off changes. Put specific blocks first, inspect effective settings with ssh -G, trace failures with ssh -vvv, and preserve key and host verification while adding ports, identities, jump hosts, or forwarding.
