For WordPress sites that need to send mail through Gmail or Google Workspace, use smtp.gmail.com with port 587 and TLS/STARTTLS, or port 465 with SSL. Connect the site through a maintained SMTP plugin using Google OAuth 2.0 whenever possible. Use an app password only when the selected plugin cannot complete OAuth, and always send a test message before relying on the configuration.

What this configuration does
WordPress can generate messages for contact forms, password resets, order notices, comments and other events, but the site still needs a mail server to deliver them. An SMTP plugin routes those messages through a Gmail or Google Workspace account instead of relying on the web host’s default mail function.

The Gmail SMTP service identifies itself as smtp.gmail.com. Gmail’s IMAP, POP and SMTP services support OAuth 2.0, with XOAUTH2 used to present an OAuth access token to the server. That means a modern WordPress mailer can authorize the sending account without storing its normal Google password in WordPress.
This setup is appropriate for ordinary site notifications and moderate transactional mail. It is not a substitute for a high-volume marketing or bulk-mail system. Google Workspace administrative guidance lists a 2,000-message-per-day limit for the Gmail SMTP server option; a site that regularly approaches that level should assess a dedicated transactional provider.

SMTP host, ports and encryption

Choose one encryption mode that matches the port. Do not select SSL on port 587 or STARTTLS on port 465 unless the plugin’s documentation explicitly defines those labels differently. If the plugin offers an automatic encryption option, verify the resulting connection with its test-mail tool.
What you need before starting
- Administrator access to the WordPress dashboard.
- A Gmail or Google Workspace account that is allowed to send the site’s mail.
- A maintained SMTP plugin with Gmail or Google Workspace OAuth support, such as the WP Mail SMTP Gmail/Google Workspace mailer.
- Access to Google Cloud to create or select a project and configure an OAuth client.
- A final sender address and display name. Keep the sender address equal to the authenticated account, or use an alias that the account is authorized to send as.
Managed Google Workspace accounts can have organization-wide restrictions on third-party OAuth applications or SMTP use. If a personal account works but a Workspace account does not, the administrator may need to review those policies before troubleshooting the WordPress fields.
OAuth 2.0 or an app password?
OAuth 2.0 is the preferred route when the plugin provides a Sign in with Google or equivalent authorization button. Google authorizes the application and supplies tokens; the plugin does not need the account’s normal password. Google recommends Sign in with Google when it is available.

An app password is a generated 16-digit passcode intended for an application or device that cannot complete Google’s OAuth flow. Google states that app passwords can only be used on accounts with 2-Step Verification enabled. Treat the passcode as a credential: store it only in the SMTP plugin, never publish it, and revoke it when it is no longer needed.

Configure the WordPress SMTP plugin with OAuth
1. Install and activate a maintained mailer
- In WordPress, open Plugins and install a maintained SMTP plugin that documents Gmail or Google Workspace OAuth support.
- Activate it, then open its mailer or SMTP settings page.
- Select the Gmail or Google Workspace mailer rather than a generic username-and-password SMTP form.
- Copy the plugin-generated Authorized Redirect URI exactly as displayed. Keep the page open; you will paste this value into Google Cloud.
The exact menu names vary by plugin, but the sequence is the same: choose the Gmail mailer, obtain its redirect URI, create the Google OAuth client, enter the client credentials, authorize the account and run a test.
2. Create or select a Google Cloud project
- Open Google Cloud and select an existing project or create a new project dedicated to the WordPress mail connection.
- Configure the project’s OAuth consent screen. Enter the application information requested by Google and select the account type that matches your Gmail or Workspace use.
- Set the publishing status required by the project. A consent screen left in testing or otherwise restricted status can limit which accounts are allowed to authorize it, so follow the status and test-user requirements shown in the Google Cloud interface.
- If the plugin’s instructions require it, enable the Gmail API for the project. Some plugin flows use the Gmail API while others present the requirement during setup; follow the mailer’s documented prerequisite rather than enabling unrelated APIs.
3. Create a web-application OAuth client
- In the project’s credentials area, create an OAuth client ID for a Web application.
- Under authorized redirect URIs, paste the URI copied from the WordPress plugin.
- Compare the two values character by character. Preserve the protocol, domain, path, capitalization and trailing characters. A redirect URI that is merely similar is not sufficient.
- Create the client and copy its client ID and client secret. Keep the secret private; it belongs in the WordPress plugin and should not be posted in support forums or page content.
4. Add the client credentials to WordPress
- Return to the plugin’s Gmail or Google Workspace mailer settings.
- Paste the Google OAuth client ID into the client-ID field and the client secret into the client-secret field.
- Save the settings if the plugin requires a separate save step.
- Click the plugin’s authorization or Sign in with Google button.
- Sign in to the exact Gmail or Workspace account that should send the WordPress messages.
- Review the requested permissions and grant access. Return to WordPress when Google redirects you back to the plugin.
Do not authorize one account and then configure a different address in the From field unless the authenticated account has that address configured as an authorized sending alias. Mismatched identities can cause authentication errors or poorer delivery.

Set the sender identity
From address
Set the From address to the account that completed OAuth, or to an alias that account is permitted to use. Avoid presenting an unrelated domain as the sender while authenticating to Gmail; the discrepancy can trigger authentication or filtering problems.
From name
Use a recognizable site or organization name. The name affects what recipients see, while the From address determines the authenticated sending identity. Keep both consistent with the site and the account.
Reply-To address
If the plugin offers a separate Reply-To field, use it for the address that should receive responses, but do not use Reply-To as a way to disguise an unauthorized From address. Verify the plugin’s behavior with a test message before enabling forms or notifications for visitors.

Send and inspect a test email
- Open the plugin’s Email Test, Test Email or similarly named screen.
- Send a message to an address you can inspect, preferably outside the sending account.
- Confirm that the plugin reports a successful SMTP submission.
- Check the recipient’s inbox and spam folder. A successful SMTP handoff does not guarantee inbox placement.
- Open the message details or headers and verify the From address, Reply-To address, receiving server, encryption result and authentication-related headers available in the mailbox.
- Repeat the test after changing the sender identity, OAuth account or encryption mode. The test should be part of the change procedure, not only an initial setup step.
If the message never arrives, check the plugin’s mail log or error display if available, then inspect the recipient’s spam folder and message headers. Do not assume that a green WordPress success notice proves final delivery.

Choose this path only when the selected SMTP client cannot complete Gmail OAuth. It is not a replacement for the account’s ordinary password.
- Open the Google Account security settings for the sending account.
- Turn on 2-Step Verification. Google requires it before an app password can be created.
- Create a dedicated app password for the WordPress SMTP connection and copy the generated 16-digit value at creation time.
- In the plugin, select its manual SMTP or password-based Gmail option.
- Enter
smtp.gmail.comas the host, port587with TLS/STARTTLS or port465with SSL, the complete Gmail or Workspace address as the username, and the generated app password as the password. - Save the settings and send a test email.
Never put the regular Google account password in the plugin. Revoke the app password when the site is retired or the connection is no longer trusted. Google also revokes app passwords after a Google account password change; generate a new one and replace the stored value before testing again.

Troubleshoot common failures

Deliverability checks beyond SMTP authentication
SMTP authentication answers whether Gmail accepted the connection; it does not establish that every recipient will trust or display the message. For a domain-based From address, inspect SPF, DKIM and DMARC alignment and make sure the visible From domain is consistent with the authenticated sending arrangement. A message can pass the plugin test and still be filtered.
Use a recognizable From name, avoid unexplained changes between notifications, and keep the account’s sending pattern within Google’s expectations. The Workspace guidance warns that spam filters may reject or filter suspicious messages. Gmail SMTP should not be treated as a bulk-mail platform simply because WordPress can submit messages through it.
Plan for sending limits and account policy
Daily volume
Google Workspace administrative guidance lists 2,000 messages per day for the Gmail SMTP server option. Treat that as a documented service limit, not a target. Count all mail sent through the account, including WordPress notifications and other clients. Sustained transactional or marketing volume belongs in a service designed for that workload.
Workspace administration
Workspace administrators can control whether users may authorize third-party applications and whether SMTP connections are permitted. A plugin configuration that succeeds with a personal Gmail account may therefore fail for a managed address without any WordPress change. Obtain the organization’s approval and use the account’s permitted authentication method.
