You can use NGINX with the RTMP module to receive a stream from a publisher and relay it to YouTube Live. A 2 GB VPS is not, by itself, proof that the server can handle every stream: a simple relay and a stream that is transcoded have different workloads. Start with pass-through, configure the RTMP application and YouTube destination, then test and monitor your own server.
How the relay works
Your encoder or other publisher sends an RTMP stream to the VPS. NGINX RTMP listens for that connection under an application name, then pushes the stream onward to YouTube. The app segment in the publisher URL must match the application configured in NGINX. The arut/nginx-rtmp-module project documents live streaming and push/pull relaying, with an example listener on port 1935.
This setup does not automatically turn the VPS into an encoder. If the incoming video already meets YouTube’s requirements, relay it without transcoding where your publisher and module configuration allow. Transcoding means decoding and encoding video on the VPS, which adds CPU and memory work.
Set YouTube’s 720p encoder values
YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists the following H.264 bitrate values for 720p. They are recommendations for configuring the stream, not a promise of quality on a particular VPS or network.

YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), keyframes every two seconds and no more than four seconds apart, and AAC or MP3 audio. Its guidance lists 128 Kbps for stereo audio. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for its current recommendations.
Get the YouTube RTMPS destination
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create or open the live stream and reveal its stream settings.
- Copy the RTMPS URL and stream key. Use the values shown for your stream; do not use a guessed endpoint or publish the key. YouTube’s RTMPS help page explains where to find them.
- Use RTMPS for the relay when supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS. Its ingest documentation specifies the RTMPS protocol, a valid YouTube server and application path, and port 443. Consult Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your broadcast. Store it outside public configuration examples and rotate it in YouTube if it is exposed.

Install an NGINX RTMP module that matches your system
Do not assume the NGINX package already includes RTMP support. The arut project documents building its module alongside NGINX source. F5’s NGINX RTMP page covers a dynamic module for NGINX Plus and its own installation flow; those instructions are specific to NGINX Plus, not a universal command for every operating system or community NGINX package.
Identify your NGINX edition, operating system, package source, and module build before choosing installation instructions. A module built for a different NGINX version or binary may not load. Follow the documentation for the exact package or build you installed.

Configure the receiving application
The following is an illustrative structural pattern, not a validated drop-in configuration. Check the directive syntax supported by your installed module and adapt the relay client or directive to the current YouTube URL. Keep your actual stream key private.

The module documentation shows push as a way to relay from an application, but the exact YouTube destination and key handling depend on the installed module’s supported syntax and current ingest values. Do not paste a real key into a public guide, repository, or ticket. After editing the configuration, validate it using the command appropriate to your NGINX installation; F5’s NGINX Plus instructions use nginx -t before reload. Apply the equivalent test-and-reload workflow documented for your edition.
Choose pass-through or transcoding

If the publisher can produce YouTube-compatible 720p settings, configuring those at the source avoids imposing an unquantified encoding load on the VPS. If conversion is necessary, benchmark your real stream rather than treating RAM alone as a capacity guarantee.

Test the end-to-end stream
- Check configuration syntax and module loading. Run the test command for your NGINX edition and resolve errors before reloading.
- Confirm reachability of the VPS. The publisher must be able to reach the configured RTMP listener, commonly port 1935 in the module example. Allow only the required inbound traffic in the VPS firewall and any provider firewall.
- Publish to the matching application. Use the VPS address, configured app name, and stream name in your publisher. The incoming URL’s application segment must match the NGINX application block.
- Verify YouTube ingest. Confirm the relay is using the RTMPS URL and key copied from Live Control Room and that the destination supports the required TLS connection over port 443.
- Check the YouTube preview and status. Confirm that video and audio arrive and that the output has the intended resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe cadence.
- Watch server load and stability during a representative session. Observe CPU, memory, network throughput, and errors under the actual stream. A brief idle check cannot establish sustained capacity.
Troubleshoot common failures
- Publisher cannot connect to the VPS: verify the host, listener port, NGINX process, module loading, and both provider and operating-system firewall rules.
- Publisher connects but the stream is not accepted: check that the URL’s app component exactly matches the configured
applicationname and that live publishing is enabled there. - YouTube does not receive the relay: re-copy the current RTMPS URL and key from Live Control Room, confirm the destination path and port 443, and check that the relay configuration is valid for your installed module.
- Key or destination authentication fails: check for a stale or mistyped key and avoid adding unintended spaces or line breaks. If the key was exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the relay securely.
- Video arrives but YouTube reports encoder issues: compare the source/output against YouTube’s 720p bitrate guidance, use CBR, set two-second keyframes (never more than four seconds apart), and check the audio codec and stereo bitrate.
- Stream stalls or the VPS becomes overloaded: determine whether the setup is transcoding, inspect CPU and memory pressure and network stability, and test a pass-through stream if the input already meets the target settings. A 2 GB memory label alone does not identify the bottleneck.
