Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You can run a 24/7 YouTube playlist with FFmpeg sending video to YouTube’s Live ingest, either directly or through an NGINX RTMP relay. NGINX is optional: it provides an intermediate RTMP stage when your setup needs one, while FFmpeg handles media playback and encoding. The main operational cautions are to validate playlist looping on your specific FFmpeg build and to plan separate retention: a YouTube stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive.
Choose the stream architecture
For a simple setup, FFmpeg can send its output straight to the ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. Add NGINX RTMP when you specifically need a local or remote relay/ingest stage between FFmpeg and YouTube. YouTube does not require NGINX.
| Approach | What it does | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg → YouTube | FFmpeg plays and encodes the media, then sends the stream directly to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. | Use when one sender can connect directly and you do not need an intermediate relay. |
| FFmpeg → NGINX RTMP → YouTube | FFmpeg sends to an RTMP application on your NGINX server; the relay forwards the feed to YouTube. | Use when the deployment calls for a separate ingest or relay stage. It adds another service to configure and monitor. |
NGINX RTMP choices are not interchangeable. The official NGINX dynamic-module guide describes a packaged module for NGINX Plus; the arut/nginx-rtmp-module is a separate third-party project. Confirm that the chosen module, NGINX edition, operating system, and package or build method are compatible before installing anything.
Install and load the RTMP module you chose
NGINX Plus dynamic module
If you run NGINX Plus, follow its official RTMP dynamic-module guide for your platform. Its flow covers installing the module package, loading ngx_rtmp_module.so in the NGINX configuration, testing the configuration with nginx -t, and reloading NGINX. Do not treat those package steps as generic instructions for every NGINX build.

Third-party arut module
If you choose the arut module, use its project documentation and verify that its build or package matches your NGINX version and deployment. Do not apply NGINX Plus package instructions to it. The RTMP directive reference documents directives for the module, including live and HLS-related configuration; check that the documentation corresponds to the module version you actually deploy.
Keep RTMP and HTTP HLS distinct
An RTMP application configured with the third-party module is not the same thing as NGINX’s separate built-in HTTP HLS module. The latter serves HLS from MP4/MOV files and is part of an NGINX commercial subscription, according to the HTTP HLS module documentation. It is not a substitute for an RTMP relay configuration.

Configure the relay and prepare your playlist
Set up NGINX as a relay only if your design uses it
Configure an RTMP application supported by your selected module, then verify the path the sender will publish to and the relay’s upstream destination. The exact directives depend on the module and deployment; use the matching module documentation rather than copying an unverified configuration. Test the NGINX configuration before reloading it.
Validate playlist playback with your FFmpeg build
FFmpeg is the playback and encoding process. The available official guidance does not establish one loop command that works for every playlist, media format, and FFmpeg version, so do not assume a particular -stream_loop or concat recipe will behave correctly in your setup. Validate the exact command and files you plan to run.

- Confirm playlist order and that every file opens and plays to completion.
- Check timestamps and transitions between files for gaps, jumps, or frozen output.
- Verify that the media’s video and audio codecs are compatible with your chosen output. Decide whether the files can be sent without re-encoding or need encoding; transcoding adds CPU work that depends on the media and output settings.
- Test audio continuity and moving video across file boundaries, not just a still frame or a short excerpt.
- Test what happens when a file is missing, unreadable, or has different streams from the others, and confirm how your sender handles reconnects.
These checks are deployment-specific; verify them with the installed FFmpeg version and representative media before relying on the playlist unattended.
Create the YouTube stream and choose output settings
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains how to obtain the stream connection details.
- Copy the server URL and stream key from the Live Control Room into the final encoder output configuration. The key acts as a password/address that permits an encoder feed; keep it private and reset it if it is exposed.
- Prefer the RTMPS ingest URL if your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension to RTMP; see its RTMPS guidance.
- For an NGINX relay, configure the sender to publish to the relay’s RTMP application and configure the relay’s upstream to use YouTube’s server URL and stream key. For direct output, configure FFmpeg to use YouTube’s endpoint and key itself. Keep the key out of public configuration examples and logs.
- Set the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval for the actual source and the uplink you can sustain. Test these settings before a public broadcast.
YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported codecs and recommends CBR. For H.264, it recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps. The recommended keyframe interval is 2 seconds and should not exceed 4 seconds. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular network can sustain them; consult the full settings and bitrate table for the resolution and frame rate you choose.

Test before leaving the stream unattended
- Start the sender with a representative playlist and confirm that the expected stream reaches YouTube’s preview.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and address warnings before making the broadcast public.
- Watch both moving video and audio during playback, especially at playlist transitions.
- Monitor the local recording or other retention output, if used, to confirm it is actually growing and playable.
- Decide how the operator or host will detect and restart failed FFmpeg and NGINX processes. The exact supervision and restart mechanism depends on the operating system and deployment; validate it rather than assuming that a process will recover unattended.
YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health and quality. Its live streaming tips provide further guidance.
Plan for 24/7 operation and archive retention
A single continuous 24/7 broadcast is not a dependable single YouTube archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If retaining the complete programming matters, arrange an independent local recording or divide the schedule into shorter streams, then verify that the resulting archives are available and complete. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Also decide who will receive alerts and what recovery looks like if the sender, relay, host, or network fails. A relay adds another process and connection to monitor; test recovery in the actual environment rather than treating a successful initial start as proof of continuous operation.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a hosted option instead of maintaining an FFmpeg and NGINX deployment, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required; it is one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. In India, UPI and cards are accepted. It streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
