To securely relay a MediaMTX stream to YouTube Live from a VPS, use MediaMTX’s documented RTMPS forwarding feature, require authentication with narrowly scoped permissions, keep the Control API private, protect the stream key, and verify YouTube’s current ingest endpoint and TLS certificate before deployment. This guide covers forwarding an incoming MediaMTX path to YouTube; it does not describe pulling video from a YouTube watch-page URL.
What this setup does
MediaMTX is a media server and proxy that can publish, read, proxy, record, play back, authenticate, and forward real-time audio and video. Its documentation describes it as “a ready-to-use and zero-dependency live media server and media proxy that allows to publish, read, proxy, record and playback real-time video and audio streams.” The workflow here takes a stream arriving on a MediaMTX path and forwards it to YouTube Live.
MediaMTX’s documented YouTube workflow does not establish a method for pulling an arbitrary YouTube watch-page URL through your VPS. If that is what you mean by “relay,” this setup is not the right direction of traffic.
Configure forwarding to YouTube Live
MediaMTX documents a forwarding destination in the form rtmps://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2#streamKey. The hash separates the RTMPS server URL from the YouTube stream key. The hostname is an example reported by MediaMTX’s guide when it was checked; ingest details can change, so use the endpoint shown in your current YouTube Live setup rather than assuming the example is still current.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Prepare the YouTube Live event. In YouTube’s live-stream setup, obtain the current ingest URL and stream key for the event or stream configuration you intend to use. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to publish to that destination.
- Configure the MediaMTX path. Set the intended path to forward to the current RTMPS ingest URL, with the stream key after the
#separator, following the syntax in the MediaMTX forwarding guide. Do not place a real key in public examples, screenshots, or logs. - Check the TLS certificate behavior. The MediaMTX guide includes a certificate fingerprint example but warns that the certificate was invalid at its last check. Verify YouTube’s live certificate and the current forwarding guidance before relying on a fingerprint; do not copy a stale fingerprint. RTMPS protects the RTMP connection using TLS/SSL, and hostname authentication matters. See MediaMTX’s forwarding documentation, YouTube’s RTMPS explanation, and Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
- Ensure the outgoing stream has both tracks. The documented YouTube workflow requires a video track and an audio track; MediaMTX warns that video-only streams can be silently rejected. Test with the actual intended audio and video sources before relying on the relay.
- Start the path and verify the event. Confirm that MediaMTX is receiving the intended path and that YouTube’s live event reports an incoming stream. Check the current YouTube event and ingest settings rather than assuming a successful MediaMTX connection alone means the public broadcast is ready.
Lock down access to MediaMTX
Require authentication and grant only needed actions
MediaMTX supports an internal user database, an external HTTP authentication service, and JWT-based authentication. Permissions can be limited by action—including publish, read, playback, api, metrics, and pprof—and by path. Give each client only the actions and paths it needs; for example, a publisher should not automatically receive administrative or monitoring access.
If you use internal credentials, MediaMTX supports hashed credentials. Its authentication guidance also recommends encrypting connections or using a VPN to protect credentials in transit. See the MediaMTX authentication documentation.

Keep the Control API private
The MediaMTX Control API is accessible by localhost only by default. Preserve that default unless remote access is genuinely required. If you enable remote visibility, add authentication and restrict network reachability to trusted systems; do not expose an administrative interface publicly without a deliberate access-control design. See the Control API documentation and the authentication guide.
Protect the VPS and stream key
The stream key is part of the forwarding destination configuration, so access to that configuration and to the VPS account should be restricted. Avoid sharing the key in support requests or diagnostic output. If a key is exposed, replace it through YouTube’s live-stream settings and update the MediaMTX configuration.

Validate before deploying
- Validate the configuration. Run MediaMTX with its documented
--validate-confoption before startup to catch configuration errors. Follow the exact syntax for your installed release in the configuration documentation. - Verify the binary. Before running a newly downloaded release, check its published SHA256 checksum and use GitHub Attestations verification as described in the MediaMTX security guide.
- Test with restricted access. Confirm that authorized clients can perform only the intended actions on the intended paths, that the API is not reachable from untrusted networks, and that a test stream reaches the correct YouTube event with audio and video.
- Recheck volatile destination details. At setup time, check YouTube’s current ingest URL and the live TLS certificate behavior. MediaMTX’s forwarding guide and the YouTube ingest configuration are time-sensitive; documentation examples are not guarantees about the endpoint or certificate currently presented.
Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube does not show an incoming stream: confirm the current ingest URL and stream key against the YouTube event settings, check the MediaMTX forwarding path and destination syntax, and verify that the certificate handling has not relied on an outdated fingerprint.
- The stream connects but YouTube does not accept it: confirm that both audio and video tracks are present. The documented MediaMTX workflow warns that a video-only stream can be silently rejected.
- A client cannot publish or read a path: check that its authentication method is configured and that its permissions include the required action for that specific path. Avoid solving an overly narrow permission problem by granting every action.
- Remote Control API access fails: localhost-only access is the default. If remote access is necessary, configure authentication and trusted-network access intentionally rather than opening the API broadly.
- Configuration validation fails: correct the reported configuration issue before starting the service, then validate again using the option documented for the installed release.
Choose viewer delivery separately from YouTube forwarding
If viewers also read streams from MediaMTX, delivery protocol is a separate decision from the outbound YouTube RTMPS connection. MediaMTX’s browser guide says HLS has higher latency than WebRTC but tends to encounter fewer connectivity problems. Choose based on whether lower latency or simpler client connectivity matters more for your viewers; see the browser reading guide.
