Install Azahar and start with a recent build
Azahar is a free, open-source Nintendo 3DS emulator for PC and mobile devices that continues Citra’s legacy. Its official project repository lists Android distribution through Google Play and direct/Obtainium installation routes, and recommends the Play build for most users who prioritize ease of access. Check the repository for current version and distribution details before installing.

Use a recent version when setting up a dual-screen Android device. Azahar’s 2123.3 release notes say that release primarily addressed issues experienced by users of dual-screen Android devices. That is a reason to keep the emulator current, not a guarantee that every device, graphics backend, or game will work identically.

Set internal resolution before tuning other graphics options
Begin at native 1x
In Azahar’s graphics settings, begin with internal resolution set to 1x, the documented native choice of 400×240. Higher integer multiples render the emulated screens at a higher resolution and can improve visual quality, but the documentation warns that higher values may have a significant performance cost. Raise the scale gradually and judge it on the specific handheld and game rather than relying on a universal recommendation. Distinguish resolution from filtering
Internal-resolution scaling and texture filtering are separate settings. Scaling changes the resolution at which the emulated screens are rendered; filtering applies a filter to textures. The documentation lists filtering options and also warns that some can significantly affect performance. Change one setting at a time so you can tell which choice is responsible for a visual change or slowdown.
Choose a layout for the handheld’s screen shape
The standard Azahar/libretro layout reference documents four arrangements. The exact appearance can vary by build and device, so treat these as choices to test rather than a promise about a particular Android menu or screen geometry.

The layout reference also documents screen swapping configured as either toggle or hold. “Side by side” here means arranging the two emulated screens next to each other; it is not a stereoscopic 3D output mode, which is documented separately.

Configure Android’s secondary display separately
Azahar’s Android secondary-display feature is an additional control, distinct from the standard core layout choices. Its implementation documents four presentations: system-default mirroring, top-screen-only, bottom-screen-only, and side by side. The feature was merged on August 8, 2025; the pull request for secondary-display support describes using a second Android screen through a physical connection or screen mirroring via Chromecast or Miracast.
- Open Azahar’s Android settings and find the secondary-display layout option. The exact path and label may vary by build.
- Choose the presentation that matches how the handheld’s auxiliary panel is connected and how you want to use it: system-default mirroring, top screen only, bottom screen only, or side by side.
- Launch a game and confirm which emulated screen appears on each physical panel. Do not assume the top and bottom assignments from the option name alone.
- In a game that uses the lower screen, tap the auxiliary panel and verify that touch input reaches the game.
The feature documentation discusses touchscreen interaction, but does not establish that every device and input combination behaves the same way. If your handheld’s touch panel does not respond as expected, test with another game that uses touch and check the device’s own input behavior.

Troubleshoot layout or performance problems methodically
- Slowdown after increasing resolution: Return to native 1x, then raise the scale one step at a time. Higher internal resolutions carry a documented performance trade-off; the sources do not establish universal frame rates or a minimum device specification.
- Unexpected screen placement: Recheck the standard layout and Android secondary-display setting independently. Confirm the actual content on each physical panel in-game.
- Layout change causes a crash or odd result: Return to a conservative layout and native resolution, confirm you are using a recent Azahar build, and change only one setting at a time. Recent dual-screen fixes do not guarantee compatibility with every configuration.
- Lower-screen taps do not register: Test in a title that uses touch and check whether the physical panel is acting as an Android touch input. The available feature description does not certify every device/input combination.
