To reduce lag in PlayStation Remote Play, first confirm the console and app are set up correctly, then test the connection at both ends. Sony’s guidance is at least 5 Mbps upload and download, with 15 Mbps in both directions recommended for best performance—but speed alone does not guarantee a stable session. Reduce competing traffic, improve the device’s Wi-Fi connection, and check for router or NAT restrictions only if the basic steps do not help.
1. Confirm Remote Play is set up correctly
A setup issue can look like a network problem. Update the console’s system software and the Remote Play app, and sign in to the same PlayStation account on the console and the device you want to play on. Sony’s setup instructions are in its Remote Play connection troubleshooting guide and Remote Play setup guide.

PS5
- On the PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play.
- If you need to wake the console remotely, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
PS4
- Open Settings > Remote Play Connection Settings and enable Remote Play.
- Activate the console as your primary PS4. If you need to wake it remotely, enable the corresponding internet-connection and network-wake options in its rest-mode settings.
If the device cannot find the console, Sony’s setup guidance says to register or pair them while both are connected to the same network. Once paired, test Remote Play again from the network you intend to use.
2. Test both ends of the connection
Remote Play depends on the connection between your console and the device running the app. Run the console’s internet connection test and a speed test on the Remote Play device. Sony’s current guidance sets a minimum of 5 Mbps upload and download and recommends at least 15 Mbps in both directions for best performance. These are service recommendations, not a guarantee that a connection meeting them will be lag-free. See Sony’s connection troubleshooting guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- High-Performance Connectivity: This Cat 6 ethernet cable is designed for superior performance, with a 24 AWG copper wire core. It provides universal connectivity as an ethernet cord for LAN network components such as PCs, servers, printers, routers, and more, ensuring reliable and fast network connections
- Advanced Cat6 Technology: Experience Cat6 performance with higher bandwidth at a Cat5e price. This network cable is future-proof, ready for 10-Gigabit Ethernet and backwards compatible with any existing Cat 5 cable network. It meets or exceeds Category 6 performance according to the TIA/EIA 568-C.2 standard
- Reliable Wired Network Solution: Known variously as a Cat6 network cable, ethernet cable Cat 6, or Cat 6 data/LAN cable, this RJ45 cable offers a more secure and reliable connection than wireless networks. It's ideal for internet connections that demand consistency and security
- Durable and Secure Design: The connectors of this ethernet cable feature gold-plated contacts and strain-relief boots for enhanced durability. Bare copper conductors not only improve cable performance but also comply with communication cable specifications
- High-Speed Data Transfer: With up to 550 MHz bandwidth, this ethernet cord is ideal for server applications, cloud computing, video surveillance, and streaming high-definition video. It also supports Power over Ethernet (PoE, PoE+, PoE++) for powering devices like IP cameras, VoIP phones, and wireless access points, ensuring fast and reliable network performance.
- If either direction falls below the minimum, address that connection before changing advanced router settings.
- If speeds meet the recommendation but play still stutters or disconnects, focus on Wi-Fi stability, competing traffic, and the route between the device and console. A speed test measures throughput at that moment; it does not rule out interference, packet loss, or NAT restrictions.
- On mobile data, check the carrier signal and your plan’s data allowance. Sony says mobile-data availability depends on carrier and network conditions, and warns that Remote Play can use more data than most video-streaming services. Its support page does not specify a fixed data amount per hour. See Sony’s mobile-data guidance.
3. Improve Wi-Fi and reduce competing traffic
When the device uses Wi-Fi, Sony recommends connecting it on the 5 GHz band. Its troubleshooting steps also include checking whether Wi-Fi works on another device, pausing downloads, and disconnecting other devices that may be using the network. Try one change at a time and retest so you can identify what helps. The suggestions are in Sony’s Remote Play troubleshooting guide.
- Pause large downloads, game updates, cloud backups, or other high-bandwidth activity during play.
- If the Remote Play device is on a weak Wi-Fi signal, try it closer to the router. This can help the local wireless link, but it will not fix an ISP routing or NAT problem.
- If you use Remote Play on PC or Mac and Wi-Fi appears to be the weak point, try Ethernet if available. This tests whether the wireless link is contributing to instability; a wired connection is not a guaranteed cure for every source of lag.
Keep the distinction in mind: the device’s Wi-Fi signal and household congestion are local-link issues; the internet route, carrier, and router’s NAT behavior are separate parts of the connection.

4. Lower video quality when the app offers the option
Sony documents resolution choices of 360p, 540p, and 720p for PS4 Remote Play in its troubleshooting guide. If the picture struggles to arrive smoothly, lowering resolution is a reasonable test. Sony does not quantify how much this changes latency, and the cited choices should not be assumed to exist on every platform or client. The support guidance notes an exclusion for PS4 Pro.

5. Check NAT and router restrictions if basic steps fail
If setup, throughput, Wi-Fi, and competing traffic do not explain the problem, router or internet-path restrictions may be involved. Sony says Remote Play uses UDP port 8572 and warns that NAT Type 3 may prevent Remote Play. Its troubleshooting guide suggests opening the port on the router, but port forwarding is an advanced, network-specific change—not a universal lag fix. See Sony’s NAT and port guidance.

6. Rule out app, device, and service problems
- Restart the Remote Play device and app, then check that the app is up to date. Reinstall it if restarting and updating do not help.
- If you cannot sign in, check PlayStation Network status before treating the issue as a home-network fault.
- On PC or Mac, check whether antivirus software is blocking the Remote Play app, as Sony advises in its troubleshooting guide.
- Confirm the game and activity are supported. Some games are incompatible, including titles that require PS VR, PS VR2, or PlayStation Camera; certain simultaneous activities can also prevent Remote Play. Sony lists these restrictions in its Remote Play overview.
Which fix should you try first?
| What you notice | First check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The console is not found or will not wake | Remote Play enabled, matching account, and rest-mode network settings | Register the device while both it and the console are on the same network |
| Stuttering or disconnects on Wi-Fi | Signal quality and other devices or downloads using the network | Try 5 GHz; on PC or Mac, test Ethernet if available |
| Speeds are below Sony’s guidance | Upload and download on both console and Remote Play device | Address the slow connection or reduce competing traffic, then retest |
| Speed tests look adequate but connection still fails | NAT type and router restrictions | Ask the ISP, router maker, or carrier about the network; consider port settings only with appropriate guidance |
| Only the image looks rough or struggles to arrive | Whether the client provides a resolution control | For PS4 Remote Play where available, test a lower resolution |
