One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchTo put Simple Machines Forum (SMF) on a new domain, you need more than the domain name: you need a web server that supports the PHP version required by your selected SMF release, a database and database user, writable application files, and DNS pointing the domain to that server. Once those pieces are ready, choose the full-install package, upload it to the domain’s document root (or a subdirectory such as /forum), open the matching install.php URL, and remove the installer files as soon as setup finishes.

This guide covers the deployment decisions, DNS boundaries, database fields, permissions, security cleanup, and failure recovery involved in a new installation. Provider-specific DNS screens, reverse-proxy rules, web-server configuration, and TLS commands differ, so those parts are identified rather than presented as universal commands.

Understand what a new-domain SMF installation includes
SMF is free and open-source community forum software. A working installation is a small stack of separate services and settings:
- Domain name: the public address visitors type.
- DNS: records that direct that name to your hosting service.
- Web site or virtual host: the server configuration that maps the domain to a document root.
- PHP runtime: the interpreter and extensions required by the SMF release you choose.
- Database service: a supported database engine, database, and login that SMF can use.
- Files and permissions: the uploaded SMF code and directories that the installer or later administration may need to write.
- HTTPS and operations: a certificate, backups, updates, and access controls suitable for a public forum.
These layers can be supplied by one hosting account or by several services. A domain registrar does not automatically provide PHP, a database, or storage; confirm each requirement with the hosting provider.

Choose the forum URL before you upload anything
Decide the permanent URL first. The choice determines the document root, the DNS name you publish, and the browser address used for installation.
Apex domain
With an apex deployment, the forum is at a URL such as https://example.com/. Point the domain at the hosting site, identify that site’s document root, and place the SMF files directly in that directory. Use this layout when the forum is the primary purpose of the domain.
Subdirectory
A subdirectory deployment places the files in a folder such as /forum, producing https://example.com/forum/. The domain can host another site at its root while SMF occupies only that folder. The installer URL must include the same path.
Separate host name
You may instead use a host name such as community.example.com. That requires a DNS record and a hosting site or virtual host for that name. Treat the chosen host name and scheme as canonical: decide whether visitors should use HTTP or HTTPS and whether a www variant is redirected before publicizing the forum.
| Layout | Example installer URL | What must match |
|---|---|---|
| Apex domain | https://example.com/install.php |
DNS target, virtual host, and document root for example.com |
| Subdirectory | https://example.com/forum/install.php |
DNS and virtual host for the domain, plus the forum directory beneath its document root |
| Separate host name | https://community.example.com/install.php |
DNS record and virtual host for community.example.com |
Check hosting prerequisites against the selected SMF release
The SMF 2.1 installation guidance requires a web server that properly supports PHP and directs the administrator to create a database and database user. Exact PHP versions, database engines, extensions, and other limits are release-specific. Check the requirements for the package you actually download and confirm them with the host; do not copy version numbers from an older tutorial into a newer release.

Request these details from the host
- The PHP versions available for the domain and the control-panel method for selecting one.
- The database engines and versions offered, and whether the installer can create a database and user.
- Whether PHP extensions required by the selected SMF release are enabled.
- The document-root path and whether you have SFTP, FTP, SSH, or a file manager.
- How file ownership and permissions are changed when an application reports that a directory is not writable.
- Storage, database-size, process, upload, and execution limits appropriate for your expected forum.
- How outgoing mail is authenticated and what limits apply to forum notifications and password resets.
- How automated database and file backups are scheduled and restored.
Compare possible hosting implementations
If you are choosing between providers or plans, compare the capabilities that affect an SMF deployment rather than choosing solely by disk space.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Decision factor | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Compatibility | Does the plan provide the PHP release, database engine, and extensions required by the selected SMF package? | An incompatible runtime can stop the installer before it creates the forum. |
| DNS and HTTPS control | Can you manage the needed records and issue or renew a certificate for the exact host name? | The domain must reach the correct site and use one deliberate canonical scheme. |
| File access | Are SFTP, FTP, SSH, or a reliable file manager available? | You need a way to upload the archive and correct ownership or modes if installation reports a write failure. |
| Backups | Can database and uploaded files be backed up on a schedule and restored independently? | A forum’s database and user-uploaded files are separate recovery assets. |
| Capacity | What storage, database, process, and traffic limits apply? | Limits can become the practical constraint as registrations, attachments, and traffic grow. |
| Mail delivery | What authenticated mail service and sending limits are available? | Activation, password-reset, and notification messages depend on reliable mail delivery. |
Point DNS at the correct hosting site
First create the hosting site or virtual host and note its document root. Then use the DNS controls for the chosen name to point it at the host. The record may be an A record for an IPv4 address, an AAAA record for IPv6, or a provider-specific record such as a target name. Use the exact record type and value supplied by your host.
- Confirm the exact public name: apex,
www, or a subdomain. - Create the matching site or virtual host at the host and select its document root.
- Enter the host’s required DNS record at your DNS provider.
- Allow time for the provider’s normal DNS propagation and caching behavior.
- Test that the name reaches the intended empty site or document root before uploading SMF.
DNS propagation is not an SMF setting. Its timing depends on existing TTLs, resolvers, and the provider. If one network still shows an old destination, check the record at authoritative DNS and test from another network rather than repeatedly changing values.
Keep DNS and HTTPS decisions separate
A DNS record only directs traffic; it does not issue a certificate or configure encryption. Certificate issuance and HTTP-to-HTTPS redirects depend on your hosting stack, web server, reverse proxy, and certificate tooling. Follow those products’ current instructions, then verify that the final canonical URL loads without a certificate warning and that alternate schemes redirect consistently.
Download the package intended for a fresh installation
The official download listing separates full-install packages from large upgrades and patches. For a new forum, select the full-install package for the release you intend to run. The listing observed for SMF includes an SMF 2.1.4 full-install option, but release listings change; verify the current version immediately before downloading.
| Package type | Use it when | Use for a new domain? |
|---|---|---|
| Full install | No SMF installation exists at the destination. | Yes. |
| Large upgrade | An existing SMF installation is being moved to a newer major or substantial release. | No. |
| Patch | An existing installation needs a smaller maintenance update within its release line. | No. |
Download the archive to a local machine, retain its original structure, and keep a record of the release selected. Do not mix files from an upgrade or patch archive into a fresh installation.
Official archive versus development repository
Normal site owners should use an official release archive. The development repository documents Composer version 2 or higher and instructs developers to run composer install; that workflow is for people intentionally building from source, not the ordinary deployment path. Using the release archive avoids adding a development dependency that the installation guide does not require.
Upload SMF and preserve its directory structure
Use the host’s file manager, SFTP, or FTP to upload the full-install archive, then extract it into the document root or the chosen subdirectory. If the archive extracts into an extra wrapper directory, move the contents so that install.php is directly where the browser path expects it.
- Open the document-root path recorded from the hosting setup.
- Upload the release archive without renaming files inside it.
- Extract the archive on the server when possible; otherwise extract locally and upload the complete tree.
- Check that the SMF files are in the intended root or
/forumfolder, not one level deeper than planned. - Confirm that the URL you selected resolves to this directory before starting the installer.
Do not delete seemingly unfamiliar files merely to make the directory look cleaner. SMF’s package layout is part of the application; remove setup files only after the installer identifies them and setup is complete.
Create a dedicated database and database user
Create the database and user in the host control panel before opening the installer. A dedicated database is easier to back up, move, and protect. If the host requires a prefix on names, record the exact resulting names rather than the shorter labels you entered.
Rank #4
Record every connection value
- Database name
- Database username
- Database password
- Database host name
- Database port, if the host does not use its default
- Any required database or user prefix
Grant the privileges the installer requires. Use a unique table prefix if the database must be shared with another application; a separate database remains the clearer and safer arrangement when the host permits it. Do not paste credentials into public support posts or commit them to a repository.
Run the browser installer
Open the URL that matches the actual deployment path, for example https://example.com/forum/install.php. The installer uses the uploaded path and presents fields for database connection details and forum administrator settings. Exact labels can vary by release and host.
- Browse to
install.phpover the final host name and intended scheme. - Enter the database name, user, password, host, and port exactly as the host supplied them.
- Choose a table prefix that is unique if the database is shared.
- Set the forum name, administrator account, administrator password, and administrator email address.
- Review the path and URL shown by the installer. Correct a wrong host or subdirectory before proceeding.
- Submit the installation and wait for the database tables and configuration files to be created.
- Sign in to the administrator area after completion and confirm that the forum loads through the intended canonical URL.
Use a unique administrator password and an email address you control. The installer’s successful completion does not prove that DNS, mail delivery, HTTPS redirects, backups, or permissions are suitable for production; test those separately.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Fix permissions when the installer cannot write
SMF may report that a file or directory is not writable. This usually reflects ownership or mode settings imposed by the hosting layout, not a database error. The installation guide includes a permissions step and notes that the installer may request FTP details when it cannot change permissions itself.
Use the least disruptive correction
- Read the exact path and item named in the installer message.
- Use the host’s file manager, SFTP/FTP permission editor, or SSH account to make that item writable by the web-server account used by the site.
- Keep ownership consistent with the host’s normal PHP execution model; do not change unrelated directories.
- Retry the installer operation and confirm that the message clears.
- After installation, review any temporary write access and restore the host’s recommended restrictive settings.
There is no universal numeric permission value: shared hosting, PHP execution mode, containers, and managed panels differ. Avoid making the entire account world-writable. If you do not know which account runs PHP, ask the host rather than guessing.
Best Value
Finish the installation and remove setup files immediately
When the installer reports success, sign in to the administrator area, verify the configured domain and path, and check the administrator email setting. Then remove the installer and any other setup files the installation guide tells you to remove. Leaving unattended installer files accessible is a security risk because they can expose or repeat installation actions.
- Open the forum in a private browser window to confirm that unauthenticated visitors receive the public site.
- Sign out and sign back in as the administrator to test the account.
- Check that the address bar stays on the chosen host name and HTTPS scheme.
- Confirm that the installer URL no longer presents a setup screen.
- Keep a private record of the release, database location, and backup method.
Apply production safeguards before inviting members
Use HTTPS and one canonical address
Issue a certificate with the tools provided by your hosting stack, then configure the web server or reverse proxy to serve the selected host name over HTTPS. Redirect the alternate scheme or host name to the canonical one only after testing that static assets, login forms, and administrative pages continue to load.
Recommended Free Tools
Back up both database and files
The database contains accounts, posts, settings, and other forum state. The file tree contains the application, configuration, extensions, and uploaded content. Schedule backups for both, store copies separately from the live host, and perform a test restore before treating the backup as reliable.
Restrict and monitor administration
Use a strong, unique administrator password, limit administrative access through controls available in your hosting stack, and review administrator accounts periodically. Monitor disk usage, database growth, failed logins, and mail delivery so that a full disk or blocked mail service does not silently disable forum functions.
Keep the software maintained
Track SMF releases and extension updates, read the upgrade instructions for the exact version you run, and take a verified backup before changing application files or the database. A patch package is for an existing installation; do not use it as the initial deployment archive.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely boundary | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The domain shows the wrong site or cannot be found. | DNS or virtual-host mapping | Confirm the record value, the exact host name configured at the server, DNS propagation, and the document root selected for that host. |
| The browser returns a server error before the installer appears. | PHP runtime or web-server configuration | Check the release-specific PHP version and required extensions, server error logs, and whether the host is sending PHP files to the correct handler. |
install.php is missing. |
Upload layout | Inspect for an extra wrapper directory, an incomplete upload, or an upgrade/patch archive used by mistake. |
| The installer cannot connect to the database. | Database credentials or network policy | Recheck the exact database name, prefixed user name, password, host, and port; confirm the user is granted access to that database. |
| The installer says a file is not writable. | Ownership or permissions | Follow the named path, use the host’s supported permission method, and supply FTP details only through the installer’s secure prompt. |
| The forum loads at one address but redirects strangely. | Canonical URL, proxy, or HTTPS configuration | Choose one host and scheme, inspect web-server and proxy redirects, and verify that the application path matches the directory where it was installed. |
| Password resets or notifications do not arrive. | Mail service | Check the host’s authenticated mail settings, sending limits, recipient spam folders, and the configured administrator email address. |
| The forum works but later cannot save uploads or settings. | Runtime permissions or storage limits | Check ownership after deployment, available disk space, host quotas, and the specific directory named by the error. |
New-domain deployment checklist
- Choose apex, subdirectory, or separate host name and record the final URL.
- Create the hosting site or virtual host and note its document root.
- Point the required A, AAAA, or provider-specific DNS record to the host.
- Verify the selected SMF release’s PHP, database, extension, storage, and permission requirements.
- Download the full-install package, not a large upgrade or patch.
- Upload and extract it without adding an unintended directory level.
- Create the database and user; record name, credentials, host, port, and prefix.
- Open the matching
install.phpURL and complete the administrator settings. - Correct only the permissions the installer identifies, using the host’s supported method.
- Sign in, test the canonical URL, and remove installer files immediately.
- Configure HTTPS, backups for database and files, administrative protections, mail delivery, and an update routine.
Once these checks pass, the domain is not merely pointing at a file directory: it is mapped to a functioning SMF application with a database, a defined URL, and basic recovery controls.
