For a cooperative shared factory, start with Factory Planner, Rate Calculator, Factory Search, and Bottleneck Lite. Add Krastorio 2 only when everyone agrees to a deeper progression change before creating the world. Choose Multiplayer Multi-Team Support when each group needs its own force, surface, or parallel base.
Quick recommendations by server type
| Server goal | Recommended mods | Why this combination works |
|---|---|---|
| Vanilla-plus cooperative factory | Factory Planner, Rate Calculator, Factory Search, Bottleneck Lite | Improves planning, throughput, navigation, and diagnosis without replacing Factorio’s progression. |
| Longer, more involved campaign | Krastorio 2 plus the four utility mods | Adds buildings, items, technologies, and mechanics while retaining tools for coordinating a large shared production system. |
| Separate bases or competitive cooperation | Multiplayer Multi-Team Support plus the utility bundle | Creates separate forces and surfaces so teams can build in parallel or compete on one server. |
These are recommendations rather than a universal ranking. The right choice changes with the Factorio branch, the exact mod versions, whether Space Age or Space Exploration is involved, the group’s tolerance for a new learning curve, and whether everyone should belong to one force.

What matters most in a multiplayer mod list
Keep every client on the same branch and mod set
Factorio compares multiplayer mod checksums when a game starts. A player with a different file or version can be blocked from joining, even when the name of the mod appears identical. Decide the Factorio branch first, then use one server mod list as the authority. Every player should join only after the client has downloaded that exact set.
Separate quality-of-life tools from progression changes
Planning and diagnostic mods generally change how players read and organize information. An overhaul changes recipes, technologies, buildings, and the length of the campaign. Mixing those categories in the decision process causes avoidable arguments: a player who expected near-vanilla Factorio may not want an overhaul that changes the entire research path.

Account for latency and server load
Large multiplayer maps magnify pauses and delayed interface responses. Prefer tools that do their work efficiently, and test any content-heavy combination with the actual player count before committing to a long save. Factory Planner documents a multiplayer crash fix and rate limiting for high-latency situations; Factory Search enables background searching by default in multiplayer to reduce pauses on large maps.
Choose one force or several deliberately
A normal cooperative game assumes one shared force and one coordinated factory. Separate-team play needs explicit ownership rules, independent research and logistics expectations, and a decision about whether teams can interact. Multiplayer Multi-Team Support is designed for that social structure rather than merely adding another interface panel.

The best low-disruption utility mods
Factory Planner: coordinate production before placing machines
Factory Planner lets players specify recipes and machines for production lines, then adapts its calculations to the active mod set. That makes it useful when several people are designing different parts of the same factory: the smelting, intermediate, and final-product targets can be discussed before a large build is placed.
It is documented as fully compatible with Factorio 2.0 and the Space Age expansion. Its changelog also records a multiplayer crash fix and rate limiting intended to improve behavior when latency is high. Those details make it the strongest first recommendation for a shared server that wants planning help without changing progression.
- Use it to agree on production targets before construction.
- Keep the planner’s recipe and machine assumptions aligned with the server’s active mod set.
- For Space Age, verify that every player is on the same Factorio branch and expansion state as the server.
Rate Calculator: check real production and consumption rates
Rate Calculator computes maximum production and consumption for selected machines. It reports ingredients, products, intermediates, selectable time scales, belt or inserter rates, container or wagon capacity, and multiplier scaling. That covers the questions that commonly stall a cooperative build: how many assemblers a line needs, whether a belt can carry the output, and how much storage or transport capacity is required.

The Factorio Mod Portal listed 445K downloads in 2026. Treat that number as a dated portal count, not a guarantee of current popularity or compatibility. The server still needs the release that matches its Factorio branch.
Factory Search: find items and entities across a shared map
Factory Search searches ingredients, products, storage, logistics, modules, entities, requests, signals, and tags. It can show results across planets or other surfaces, supports multiplayer and any mod, and enables background searching by default in multiplayer to reduce pauses on large maps.
The mod page’s concise description is unusually relevant to a server: it “supports multiplayer and compatible with any mod.” In practice, that means a player can locate a forgotten requester, module, signal, or storage target without asking another player to remember where it was placed. The Factorio Mod Portal listed 116K downloads in 2026.
Bottleneck Lite: diagnose stalled machines with minimal overhead
Bottleneck Lite is intended to locate bottlenecks with zero runtime overhead and instant response to status changes, according to its official mod-portal description. It is a good default when players want visual diagnostics but do not want a large ruleset or a new progression layer.
Use it when the factory has machines waiting for ingredients, output blocked, or otherwise failing to run. Pairing it with Rate Calculator separates two problems that are often confused: a line can have the correct theoretical rate but still stop because a belt, inserter, input, or output is blocked.

When an overhaul is worth the multiplayer cost
Krastorio 2: a campaign decision, not a casual add-on
Krastorio 2 adds new buildings, items, technologies, and mechanics, creating a substantially longer and more involved cooperative campaign. The Factorio Mod Portal listed 389K downloads in 2026. Its official page lists Factorio versions 0.18 through 2.1 and says it has native Space Exploration compatibility.
Do not treat those version ranges as proof that one file works unchanged on every branch. Select the exact Factorio version first, then install the K2 release made for that branch and test the complete set before inviting the group.
Space Age requires special care. The base Krastorio 2 mod does not properly support Space Age progression; Space Age players should use the separate Krastorio 2 Spaced Out compatibility project instead. Confirm that project, its supported branch, and any other overhaul or exploration content before creating the save.
Why adding or removing K2 mid-save is disruptive
A large overhaul changes recipes, technologies, items, and machines that the existing save may already have recorded. Adding it after a campaign starts can invalidate plans and create progression inconsistencies; removing it can strand entities or recipes. Make K2 a group decision before world creation, and keep a known-good mod list archived for the save.

Multiplayer Multi-Team Support gives each team its own force and surface, allowing parallel bases or competitive cooperation on one server. It is the appropriate choice when the server’s social structure matters as much as the factory: for example, two groups may want independent logistics and research while sharing a map, or teams may want to compare solutions under the same scenario.

Its documentation covers Factorio 2.0 and 2.1 releases. The team cap varies with Space Age, so do not promise a fixed number of teams without checking the release and expansion combination you will run. The project documents verification against mods including Krastorio 2, Alien Biomes, dangOreus, VoidBlock, Periodic Madness, and Platformer. Verification is useful evidence, but the complete final mod list still deserves a test server.
Questions to settle before enabling multiple teams
- Will each team have separate research, or will research be shared by server rules?
- Can players cross to another team’s surface, trade, or share trains and blueprints?
- Is the goal friendly parallel construction, a competitive scenario, or both?
- Which Space Age team limit applies to the exact release?
How to synchronize a multiplayer server
Factorio supports cooperative and PvP multiplayer, including dedicated-server operation. The safest process is to make the server’s branch and mod list authoritative rather than letting each player assemble a set independently.
- Choose the Factorio branch and expansion. Record the exact branch, such as the 2.0 or 2.1 line, and whether the save uses Space Age. This decision controls which releases of every mod are valid.
- Choose the campaign type. Decide whether the save is vanilla-plus, an overhaul campaign, or a multi-team scenario. Resolve Krastorio 2 and Space Age compatibility before generating the world.
- Install the complete set on the server. Include the utility bundle and any content or team mod in one authoritative list. Do not let players add optional files ad hoc.
- Export or publish the server mod list. Give players the list produced by the server, including exact versions. Keep a copy with the save so a replacement host can reproduce it.
- Have every player download that exact set. Official multiplayer synchronization downloads the same mod versions used by the server. Players should wait for that download to finish before attempting to join.
- Start a connection test before the real campaign. Have every regular player join, move around, open the major mod interfaces, and perform the actions the server will use. Test on the actual hosting arrangement, especially when latency is high.
- Freeze the list for the campaign. If a mod must be updated, make a backup and announce the change. Everyone must receive the same new files before reconnecting.
What a checksum mismatch means
A checksum mismatch means at least one client does not have the same mod data as the server. Confirm the Factorio branch first, then compare the enabled list and versions. Remove duplicate or stale local copies, download the server’s versions again, and retry. If the server changed its list, distribute the new list to every player rather than asking only the player who saw the error to troubleshoot.

Vanilla-plus co-op
Use Factory Planner, Rate Calculator, Factory Search, and Bottleneck Lite. This bundle improves coordination, measurement, navigation, and diagnosis while leaving the normal technology and resource progression intact. It is the safest first campaign for a mixed-experience group.
Long overhaul campaign
Use Krastorio 2 together with the four utility mods. Verify the exact Factorio branch, and resolve Space Age versus Space Exploration compatibility before starting. Tell new players that recipes, technologies, and construction choices will differ from a standard campaign; otherwise the learning curve can feel like a server failure rather than an intentional design choice.

Decision checklist
- Exact branch: Is every mod release made for the same Factorio branch?
- Progression: Do you want quality-of-life tools only, or a campaign-changing overhaul?
- Learning curve: Is the group ready for new recipes and technologies?
- Expansion compatibility: Are Space Age and Space Exploration requirements explicitly resolved?
- Runtime behavior: Have you tested searching, planning, and diagnostics with the expected latency and player count?
- Social structure: Does everyone belong to one force, or do teams need separate surfaces and bases?
- Save policy: Is the exact mod list archived so the campaign can be restored?
Common multiplayer problems and fixes
Players cannot join after a mod update
Stop the server, record the new list, and distribute it to every player. A partial update is not enough: checksums are compared when multiplayer starts, so all clients must have matching files.
The factory feels slow after adding a search or planning tool
Check whether the mod is performing a large foreground search or calculation. Factory Search’s background searching is enabled by default in multiplayer to reduce pauses; if behavior differs, test the same query on a copy of the save and confirm that everyone uses the intended release.
Players disagree about whether a line is under-built
Use Rate Calculator for the selected machines and time scale, then inspect the physical line with Bottleneck Lite. The theoretical maximum, belt or inserter rate, and actual blocked or starved state answer different questions.
A Space Age overhaul save behaves unexpectedly
Recheck the compatibility choice rather than assuming the base overhaul supports the expansion. Krastorio 2’s official guidance says its base mod does not properly support Space Age progression; use the separate compatibility project intended for that combination, and test before continuing the campaign.
Final recommendation
For most shared factories, install the four-tool utility bundle first: Factory Planner for coordinated designs, Rate Calculator for measurable throughput, Factory Search for navigation across a growing base, and Bottleneck Lite for fast visual diagnosis. Add Krastorio 2 only as a pre-planned campaign commitment, and use Multiplayer Multi-Team Support when independent forces and surfaces are the point of the server. In every case, lock the Factorio branch, publish one exact mod list, and require every client to pass the checksum and connection test before the campaign begins.
