vMix attempts to reconnect to YouTube automatically when the internet connection or streaming provider drops; there is no separate reconnect switch identified in vMix’s guidance. Watch the Stream button: orange means vMix is disconnected or trying to connect, and red means a streaming connection has been established. This restores the encoder connection, not your internet service, and it cannot guarantee that YouTube will keep the same live event open through every outage.
What to do when the connection drops
- Let your internet connection recover. vMix cannot restore a failed ISP or network connection. Once connectivity returns, leave vMix running and give it time to retry; vMix does not state a retry interval or number of attempts.
- Watch the Stream button in vMix. Orange indicates a connection or retry state. Red indicates vMix has established a connection and is streaming to the internet. These indicators describe the encoder connection, not whether YouTube has preserved the event or viewer page.
- Check YouTube’s status. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, review stream health and any status messages. If vMix shows red but YouTube reports a problem, use YouTube’s diagnostics to identify the YouTube-side issue.
- Keep the intended event configured. For a Studio-created or scheduled event, confirm that vMix has the correct stream URL and stream key. Avoid pressing Stop or ending the YouTube event if your aim is to resume the same event.
These reconnect details come from vMix’s support article, last updated August 20, 2020. If your version’s interface differs, check the current vMix menus and support guidance.
Configure the YouTube destination before going live
There are two documented ways to set up the YouTube destination. Neither is established as better for outage recovery; the difference is how you create and manage the event.

Use a YouTube Studio event and stream key
Create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio, then copy the stream URL and stream key into the corresponding vMix streaming destination fields. YouTube describes stream keys as the password and address for the encoder’s feed, so treat the key as a credential: do not publish or share it, and replace it if it is exposed. Confirm the destination and event before going live.

Use vMix Live Stream Now
Select the YouTube destination in vMix, sign in, and create a stream or choose a scheduled event. vMix’s guide says this workflow can reuse the same stream automatically on repeat occasions. Be aware of the control consequence: when you finish the stream in vMix, it automatically ends on YouTube. The procedural guide was updated March 16, 2021, so labels may differ in newer versions.
Keep the YouTube event from ending unintentionally
Encoder reconnection and YouTube event continuity are separate. A reconnecting vMix instance does not guarantee that YouTube will keep the same event active or preserve its viewer page. YouTube’s encoder settings include auto-start and auto-stop options, which affect whether encoder actions control starting and ending the event. Check those settings in Live Control Room and avoid ending the event if you are trying to continue it. The available official guidance gives no outage-duration threshold after which event continuity is assured.

Why vMix keeps switching between orange and red
Repeated cycling usually calls for troubleshooting the network, workload, or route to YouTube—not searching for a hidden reconnect toggle. vMix’s article, last updated August 20, 2020, lists low upload bandwidth for the selected quality, high CPU load, and a provider path unable to receive the selected quality as possible causes.
- Check upload capacity. vMix gives a rule of thumb that streaming bitrate should be less than 80% of available upload speed. Treat this as guidance, not a guarantee: other devices and network variation can reduce the capacity actually available to the stream.
- Reduce the stream’s demands if upload is constrained. Lower the selected streaming quality or bitrate, then monitor whether the connection stabilizes. Confirm the resulting stream health in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Check CPU load. Close unnecessary workloads or reduce demanding production settings if the computer is under heavy load.
- Check the route to the provider. If bandwidth and CPU appear adequate, review YouTube’s stream-health messages and investigate whether the connection path can sustain the selected quality.
Common problems and fixes
- The button is orange after an outage: vMix says it will attempt to reconnect. Restore the network connection, leave the stream configured, and allow retries; no retry timing is specified.
- The button turns red but YouTube still reports an issue: red confirms the encoder connection to the internet, not a clean YouTube event. Check stream health and status messages in Live Control Room.
- The stream repeatedly disconnects: check upload capacity against bitrate, CPU load, and whether the route to YouTube supports the selected quality.
- The same event does not resume: reconnect behavior does not guarantee event continuity. Check whether the event remains active and review YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings. Do not end the event or press Stop if continuing that event is the goal.
- The stream key or destination is wrong: verify the stream URL and key against the intended YouTube event. Keep the key private because it authorizes the encoder feed.
