Configure WP Super Cache in Simple caching first: enable page caching and the baseline options, verify that anonymous requests receive a static file, then tune expiry, garbage collection, preload, exclusions, and any CDN. Move to Expert mode only after backing up .htaccess and confirming that Apache can use mod_rewrite; Expert can remove a PHP decision from the request path, but a bad rewrite rule can make the site unavailable.

This guide assumes an Apache-based LAMP VPS running WordPress with permalinks enabled. It covers single sites and the additional activation and rewrite considerations required by WordPress multisite.

What WP Super Cache does on a VPS

WordPress normally builds an anonymous page by running PHP, loading the WordPress core, querying the database, rendering the theme, and sending the resulting HTML through Apache. WP Super Cache generates a static HTML copy of that result. Subsequent anonymous requests can receive the copy instead of starting the full WordPress execution path.

The cache is intended for visitors who do not need a personalized response. Logged-in users, commenters, and visitors whose pages depend on a password or other session state must normally bypass the anonymous page cache. A cached copy that contains one visitor’s account information, shopping state, or comment form response is a correctness and privacy failure, not a performance win.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

On a standard installation, temporary files are stored under wp-content/cache/. The official setup documentation describes that directory as temporary storage: do not keep important files, permanent symlinks, or directories there because cleanup can remove its contents.

There are two delivery paths:

  • Simple mode: a small part of WordPress checks whether the request is eligible and then serves an existing supercached file. It does not require changing .htaccess.
  • Expert mode: Apache mod_rewrite sends eligible anonymous requests directly to a static file in the supercache directory, bypassing PHP. This has the higher performance ceiling but makes rewrite ordering and rollback important.

Product documentation also uses a statement that 99% of visitors will receive static HTML. That is an undated vendor claim without a described independent measurement method, so it should not be treated as a guaranteed result for your VPS.

Check prerequisites before installing

Use the right server stack

The procedure here is for an Apache-based LAMP VPS. WordPress should already have its intended permalink structure working: open a few post and page URLs while logged out before introducing caching. A broken permalink configuration can look like a cache failure later.

Back up rewrite configuration

Simple mode is safe to try without editing .htaccess. Before selecting Expert, make a copy of the current .htaccess file and ensure the Apache rewrite module is available. Keep the backup outside the cache directory. If a generated rule causes a 500 error or routes requests incorrectly, restore the backup and return to Simple mode.

Multisite activation

On WordPress multisite, network activation is recommended. WP Super Cache uses a global wp-content/advanced-cache.php drop-in, so the way the plugin is activated affects the whole network. Start with Simple mode when you want to avoid network-specific .htaccess ordering complexity.

Install the plugin and create a safe baseline

  1. Sign in to WordPress and open Plugins → Add New.
  2. Search for WP Super Cache, install it, and activate it.
  3. Open Settings → WP Super Cache.
  4. On the cache settings screen, choose Simple caching and save the setting.
  5. Enable the baseline options recommended by the official setup guide: Compress pages, Don’t cache pages for known users, Cache rebuild, and Extra homepage checks.
  6. Enable CDN support only when you have actually configured a CDN hostname and origin relationship. Turning the option on without a working CDN creates broken asset URLs rather than faster delivery.
  7. Save the settings, then request a public page while logged out. Use a private browser window so an administrator cookie does not change the result.

Why the baseline options matter

  • Compress pages allows the plugin to deliver compressed page output when the request and server configuration support it. If Apache compression or PHP zlib is already active in a conflicting way, disable or reconcile the conflicting layer before judging the cache.
  • Don’t cache pages for known users protects logged-in users, commenters, and other visitors who carry identifying cookies or require personalized output.
  • Cache rebuild lets the plugin keep an older valid cache available while a fresh copy is generated, reducing the chance that a visitor receives an uncached response during regeneration.
  • Extra homepage checks add checks around the homepage, which is often the most frequently requested and most frequently changed URL.

Do not use the anonymous page cache as a substitute for application-level rules. A site with member dashboards, password-protected pages, comments, carts, or other per-user output must keep those responses excluded unless it has deliberately designed and tested separate cache rules.

Simple versus Expert mode on Apache

Decision factor Simple caching Expert caching
Request path WordPress performs a small eligibility check, then serves an existing supercached file. Apache mod_rewrite routes an eligible request directly to the static file.
Performance ceiling Very close to Expert for many sites, but PHP still participates in the decision. Highest ceiling because PHP can be bypassed for a cache hit.
.htaccess risk No plugin rewrite block is required. Incorrect or badly ordered rules can produce routing errors or take the site down.
Rollback Switching mode and clearing the cache is comparatively easy. Requires a known-good .htaccess backup and testing of both hits and misses.
Multisite fit Recommended starting point when network rewrite ordering is uncertain. Requires careful placement of the generated block relative to network WordPress rules.
Dynamic behavior Still needs exclusions for known users and personalized responses. Has the same content-safety requirements; faster delivery does not make dynamic pages cacheable.

When to stay with Simple mode

Stay with Simple mode if you do not routinely review Apache rewrite rules, if the VPS hosts several applications with different rewrite requirements, or if you need the easiest recovery path. The official documentation describes Simple mode as almost as fast for many sites. A predictable configuration that serves correct pages is preferable to a theoretically faster configuration that intermittently returns errors.

How to move to Expert mode safely

  1. Confirm that the site works with Simple mode and that you have a tested .htaccess backup.
  2. Verify that Apache has mod_rewrite enabled. If your host controls Apache modules, ask the administrator to confirm it rather than editing unrelated server files.
  3. In Settings → WP Super Cache, select Expert caching and save.
  4. Review the generated WPSuperCache block in .htaccess. It must be placed correctly relative to the existing WordPress rewrite rules; this ordering is especially important on multisite.
  5. Open a public URL in a private window, test it again, and then test a URL that has no existing cache file. Check both successful cache hits and normal cache misses.
  6. If you see a 500 error, redirect loop, missing page, or unexpected PHP response, restore the backup, return to Simple mode, clear the file cache, and investigate the rewrite ordering before trying Expert again.

Set cache lifetime and garbage collection

Garbage collection removes stale files from the cache directory. There is no universal expiry value: the correct setting depends on how often content changes, how much disk space the VPS has, and how much cleanup work Apache and the filesystem can handle.

Site pattern Starting approach What to watch
Frequently updated news, community, or comment-heavy site Use a shorter cache timeout and consider the official guide’s 600-second scheduler interval as a starting point. Publishing frequency, comment freshness, and the number of files removed each run.
General-purpose site with regular edits Use the official guide’s 1800-second timeout as a starting point, then adjust from observed staleness and disk use. Whether visitors see an old version after an edit and whether cleanup causes noticeable load.
Mostly static site Use a very long timeout or disable routine collection only after confirming that disk capacity is ample and there is a deliberate purge process. Disk growth, old content remaining after changes, and the ability to clear the cache when needed.

The 1800-second timeout and 600-second scheduler interval are starting values from the official guide, not universal prescriptions. A short timeout does not guarantee fresh content if a page is excluded from cleanup or delivered from another layer, and a long timeout is not safe if editors cannot purge changed pages.

Protect the cache directory

Treat wp-content/cache/ as disposable. Do not store uploads, backups, configuration files, symlinks, or application data there. Ensure the web server can write cache files and remove stale ones, but do not grant broader filesystem permissions than your hosting model requires.

Use preload deliberately

Preload visits posts, categories, and tags sequentially to create cache files before visitors request them. This can reduce the cold-cache period after a purge, but it can take a long time on a large site and consumes CPU, PHP, database, disk, and bandwidth resources while it runs.

Preload behavior and the garbage-collection trade-off

Preload Mode disables routine garbage collection while the preload set is being built. That prevents the cleanup process from deleting files that the preload process has just generated, but it also means stale files can remain longer. Edits and comments still clear affected cache entries, so preload is not a promise that every page remains unchanged.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

The official guide suggests a 2880-minute (two-day) preload interval when sidebar widgets do not need frequent updates. Treat that as a site-specific starting point. If a widget, menu, or editorial block changes several times a day, a two-day preload interval can leave visitors with old surrounding content even when an individual post was refreshed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Preload checklist

  1. Estimate the number of posts, categories, and tags that will be visited and the time available for the job.
  2. Enable preload only when the VPS has enough CPU, memory, database capacity, and disk headroom for sequential generation.
  3. Choose an interval that matches sidebar and taxonomy update frequency rather than copying a value blindly.
  4. After a large import or theme change, clear the cache and observe the preload run before relying on it.
  5. Check disk usage and a sample of freshly generated pages. Disable preload if it competes with normal traffic or leaves stale content that editors cannot explain.

Configure a CDN without breaking page caching

WP Super Cache’s CDN feature rewrites URLs for static files in wp-content and wp-includes, excluding PHP files, so those assets can be requested from another hostname. With origin pull, the CDN fetches an asset from the VPS on its first request and serves later requests from edge locations.

  1. Provision the CDN hostname and origin according to that CDN’s instructions.
  2. Open Settings → WP Super Cache → CDN.
  3. Enter the configured hostname and enable the rewrite options that match your CDN setup.
  4. Save the settings and clear the WP Super Cache file cache so pages do not retain old asset URLs.
  5. Open a public page and inspect its HTML or browser network requests to confirm that static assets use the intended hostname and still return successfully.

A CDN is an asset-delivery layer, not a replacement for page-cache exclusions. Keep logged-in users, commenters, carts, password-protected responses, and other personalized output out of the anonymous cache even when images, stylesheets, and scripts are delivered from an edge hostname.

Exclude content that must stay dynamic

Start with the plugin’s known-user protection and add explicit exclusions for any URL whose output changes by visitor. Typical examples include account areas, login and logout endpoints, password-protected pages, comment submission flows, and pages whose query parameters select a user-specific result.

  • Test forms, search, carts, and dashboards as their real users would use them.
  • After adding an exclusion, clear affected cache files and verify that the response is generated dynamically.

Do not assume that a page is safe to cache merely because its URL is public. If a plugin injects account, location, experiment, or commerce data into the HTML, the page needs a tested cache rule or an exclusion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify that the cache is working

  1. Log out of WordPress or open a private browsing window.
  2. Request a public post or page once. The first request may create the cache file.
  3. Request the same URL again without changing cookies or query parameters.
  4. View the page source and search for a marker such as Cached page generated by WP-Super-Cache on YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS.
  5. Inspect the response headers. PHP delivery can include WP-Super-Cache: Served supercache file from PHP.
  6. Repeat the check after an edit, cache purge, or mode change to confirm that the new timestamp and content are being served.

A missing marker is not, by itself, proof that every setting is wrong: a page can be excluded, the request can carry a known-user cookie, or the first request can be generating the file. Use the source and headers together, and test with a genuinely anonymous request.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely checks Recovery
No cached marker or repeated PHP generation Confirm caching is enabled, the cache directory is writable, permalinks work, and the URL is not excluded by cookies or query parameters. Fix permissions or exclusions, clear the cache, and test again in a private window.
Old content remains after an edit Check the timeout, preload interval, widget behavior, and whether the affected cache entry was cleared. Clear the affected file cache, shorten the lifecycle setting, or adjust the content’s exclusion and purge workflow.
500 error or redirect loop after Expert mode Review the generated WPSuperCache block and its position relative to WordPress rules. Restore the .htaccess backup, switch to Simple mode, clear the cache, and retest before changing rewrite rules.
Cache files disappear or disk usage behaves unexpectedly Look for important data stored under wp-content/cache/, and review garbage-collection and preload settings. Move permanent data elsewhere, set a lifecycle appropriate to available disk, and monitor cleanup.
Compressed output is malformed or inconsistent Check for conflicting Apache mod_deflate or PHP zlib compression. Use one coherent compression path, then clear the cache and verify the response again.
Multisite behaves differently across sites Confirm network activation and inspect the global advanced-cache.php drop-in and network rewrite ordering. Use Simple mode while resolving network-specific rules; only return to Expert after every site has been tested.

A practical operating routine

After publishing or editing

Use the plugin’s cache-clearing controls when a change does not appear, and verify the affected public URL while logged out. Cache rebuild can keep an older valid copy available during regeneration, but it does not remove the need to test the newly generated page.

After changing CDN or rewrite settings

Clear the file cache after changing a CDN hostname, CDN rewrite setting, or Expert-mode rules. Test a page source, a static asset, a logged-in page, and a URL that should remain dynamic.

During routine VPS maintenance

Monitor free disk space, cache-directory growth, cleanup activity, and error logs. Recheck cache behavior after Apache configuration changes, compression changes, permalink changes, or plugin updates. Keep the .htaccess backup until the new configuration has survived normal publishing and comment activity.

Choose settings by site behavior

Your priority Recommended starting choice Reason
Fastest safe first deployment Simple mode with the baseline options and a 1800-second timeout. No rewrite editing, straightforward rollback, and a documented starting lifecycle.
Maximum Apache-side delivery speed Expert mode after backup, mod_rewrite confirmation, and hit/miss testing. Apache can serve the generated file without invoking PHP for eligible requests.
Frequent publishing or comments Shorter timeout, potentially a 600-second scheduler interval, and careful purge checks. Reduces the window in which stale files remain, at the cost of more cleanup work.
Large mostly static archive Long timeout or controlled preload, with disk monitoring and a deliberate purge process. Fewer regenerations can reduce load, but stale files and disk growth become the operator’s responsibility.
WordPress multisite with uncertain rewrites Network activation and Simple mode first. The global drop-in and network rule ordering make a conservative rollout easier to recover.

The dependable rollout is incremental: establish correct anonymous caching in Simple mode, prove it with source and header checks, tune expiry and preload to the site’s publishing pattern, then consider Expert mode only when the operational benefit justifies rewrite risk.
