Essential lets you host a Minecraft Java Edition world directly from your own computer instead of renting a conventional dedicated server. Install Essential in a compatible Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge profile, open a world, choose Host World, and invite friends. The important limitation is that your computer is the server: you must stay online for friends to play, and Essential documents a maximum of eight players in one world at a time.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
What Essential hosting actually is
Essential is a peer-to-peer world-hosting mod for Minecraft Java Edition. It uses the host player’s running game and computer hardware to provide the multiplayer session. That makes it different from a rented dedicated server, where a separate machine keeps a world available around the clock.

When you host with Essential, the world remains available only while the host is running Minecraft and connected. If the host closes the game, loses the connection, or otherwise goes offline, the other players have nowhere to connect. Essential’s official hosting documentation states this directly: the host is the server.
This model is a good fit for a small group that can play at the same time and coordinate around one person’s availability. It is not a substitute for persistent hosting when players need to enter the world while the original host is away.

Essential’s documented capacity
The official Start Hosting documentation says that up to eight players can be in a world at one time. Treat that as Essential’s documented limit, not a promise that every computer, modpack, or internet connection will provide the same experience. The documentation does not establish a universal RAM requirement, latency figure, or performance benchmark.
Requirements before you install
Minecraft Java Edition and the official launcher
Essential’s manual guide lists the Minecraft Launcher as a prerequisite, and its wiki says the mod works only with the official version of Minecraft. You therefore need a legitimate Minecraft Java Edition installation launched through the official Minecraft launcher or a supported third-party launcher that is using that installation.
Do not treat a Bedrock-only installation as interchangeable with Java Edition. Essential’s documented workflow is for Java Edition, and the mod’s supported-version information is presented in that context.
A compatible modloader
Install one of Essential’s supported modloaders:
- Fabric: The manual guide typically recommends Fabric because of its modern architecture and broad mod ecosystem.
- Forge: Use this when the mods you intend to play require Forge.
- NeoForge: Use this for a modpack or mods built for NeoForge.
The loader is part of the compatibility chain. A Fabric build of a mod is not interchangeable with a Forge or NeoForge build, even when the Minecraft version number looks the same.
Matching Minecraft and Essential versions
Choose an Essential build that matches both your Minecraft version and your selected modloader. Essential’s homepage currently describes support for Minecraft versions 1.8, 1.12, and 1.16 through 1.21 on Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge. Those supported versions can change as Minecraft and Essential release new builds, so check Essential’s current compatibility information when you install rather than assuming every intermediate version is supported.
The same mod set for every participant
For a modded world, every player must have the same mods and exact versions installed. Put matching files in each player’s mods folder, using the same Minecraft version and modloader profile. Essential’s hosting documentation makes exact mod and version matching a condition of joining.

Essential does not make incompatible client installations compatible. If one player has a different build, a missing dependency, or an extra gameplay-changing mod, that player may fail to join or may not load the world correctly. Build and test the mod list before inviting the whole group.
Install Essential
Use the installer
Essential’s installer supports the default Minecraft launcher, Prism Launcher, and CurseForge Launcher. Select the launcher profile you intend to use, then select the Minecraft version and modloader that match your world. Install the corresponding Essential build into that profile.
After installation, open the launcher and confirm that the profile uses the intended loader. Launching an unmodded profile will not load Essential, even if the mod file exists elsewhere on your computer.
Manual installation
Manual installation is available when the installer does not cover your setup or you need to manage files yourself. Create or select the correct loader profile first, then place the Essential file for that exact Minecraft version and loader in the profile’s mods folder. Keep the folder organized so you can identify the active files and remove an incompatible build without disturbing unrelated profiles.
Repeat the same installation choices for every player. A shared mod list should identify the Minecraft version, loader, Essential version, and every additional mod version.
Verify the installation
- Open the launcher and select the modded profile you configured.
- Start Minecraft and wait for the title screen.
- Confirm that Essential’s features, including the social interface and hosting controls, are visible.
- If Essential is missing, close the game and check that the profile points to the correct game directory and mods folder.
Do not proceed to world setup until the host and all intended players can launch the same profile successfully. Fixing the profile first prevents a failed join from being mistaken for a hosting problem.

How to host a world with Essential
Start from the title screen
- Launch Minecraft with the matching Essential, Minecraft, and modloader versions.
- From the main menu, select Host World.
- Choose the world you want to share.
- Review the basic world settings, then select Next.
- Select the friends you want to invite.
- Select Done to finish the hosting setup.
Essential then exposes that running world through its social and invite flow. The exact friend-selection display can vary with the current Essential release, but the official workflow is the same: choose the world, configure its basic settings, select invitees, and complete the setup.
Host an existing world from the pause menu
- Launch the matching modded profile.
- Open the existing single-player world.
- Open the pause menu.
- Select Host World.
- Review the world settings and select Next.
- Choose the friends to invite and select Done.
This does not convert the save into a permanent independent server. It starts an Essential-hosted session for that world while your game remains online.

Use Essential’s social or invite interface to select the people who should join. Each invited player should launch the same Minecraft version, modloader, Essential build, and mod set before accepting or following the invitation. If a player cannot see or accept the invite, verify the profile and Essential installation on both sides before changing world settings.
What the host must do during a session
The host must keep Minecraft running and remain online for the session’s duration. Essential’s official wording is unambiguous: “The host needs to be online because they are the server. If they’re offline, there’s nowhere for the other players to connect to.” Closing the game ends the host-provided server session; it does not leave a separate process running for friends.
Plan sessions around the host’s availability. If the host needs to leave, save the world before shutting down and tell the group that the session is ending. Another player can host a separate session from a copy of the world, but that creates a new host arrangement rather than transferring an always-online server automatically.

Every player needs the exact same versions
For Essential’s modded hosting workflow, “the same mods” means the same files or equivalent builds for the same Minecraft version and loader. Matching only the mod names is not sufficient. A newer release on one computer and an older release on another can prevent a connection even when both players believe they installed the same mod.

- Match the Minecraft version.
- Match Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge.
- Match the Essential version.
- Match every gameplay, library, and dependency mod.
- Keep the profile’s configuration consistent when a mod requires configuration files to match.
Keep a shared mod list
Before the first session, write down the exact file names and versions in the pack. Distribute that list to every player and remove obsolete copies from each mods folder. If you update one mod, update the group together and test the host profile before inviting everyone.
Client-only and server-required mods
Essential’s documented requirement is that everyone has the exact same mods and versions installed. The safest approach for an Essential session is therefore a synchronized profile rather than individually customized installations. Do not assume a mod is harmless to omit merely because it appears cosmetic; consult that mod’s own compatibility instructions before changing the shared list.
Essential versus a managed Minecraft server
Essential and managed hosting solve different problems. Essential provides a free, host-operated session from a player’s computer. A managed server is a paid hosting category in which a provider runs the server independently of the players’ personal game sessions. The following comparison uses only the documented Essential characteristics; managed-host limits, prices, and control panels vary by provider and plan.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Consideration | Essential world hosting | Managed Minecraft hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | The host’s Minecraft session must remain online. | Designed to remain online independently of the original player, subject to the provider’s service and plan. |
| Setup | Install the official Java game, a compatible loader, Essential, and the matching mod set. | Configure a server panel and upload or select server files; exact steps vary. |
| Scale | Official documentation states a maximum of eight players in one world at a time. | Player limits depend on the provider, plan, software, and configuration; no universal figure applies. |
| Mods | All participants must use the exact same mods and versions. | Clients still need to be compatible with the server’s software and mods, but the server can operate separately from a player’s PC. |
| Cost model | Essential describes its world hosting as free. | Managed hosting is a paid category; current prices depend on the provider and plan. |
Choose Essential when the group is small, can play together, and wants to avoid a separate hosting bill. Choose managed hosting when persistence while the original host is offline is more important than the simplicity of launching a world from the game.

Essential does not appear in the menu
- Confirm that Minecraft was launched with the modded profile rather than the vanilla profile.
- Check that the Essential file is in the active profile’s mods folder.
- Verify that the Essential build matches the Minecraft version and loader.
- Close and relaunch the game after correcting the profile.
A friend cannot accept or see the invitation
- Make sure both players are using the same Essential-compatible profile.
- Confirm that each player is signed into the social features required by the current Essential release.
- Have the friend restart Minecraft after changing mods or profiles.
- Test with one invited player before inviting the entire group.
The connection fails after a modpack change
Return both computers to the last known-good shared profile, then compare the Minecraft version, loader, Essential build, mod files, and dependency versions one by one. Do not troubleshoot by randomly adding or removing files; that can hide the mismatch. Once both players launch the same profile, try the invitation again.
The host went offline
This is expected behavior for Essential hosting, not a setting that can be enabled. The host’s computer supplies the server session, so friends cannot continue in that world after the host disconnects. Start a new session when the host returns or move the world to a separate managed hosting arrangement if continuous access is a requirement.

The group exceeds eight players
Essential’s official documentation limits a world to eight players at a time. A ninth player cannot be added within that documented capacity. Reduce the active group or evaluate a different hosting architecture whose published plan and software limits fit the intended player count.

Version and update checklist
Essential and Minecraft compatibility changes as new releases arrive. Before updating, record the currently working Minecraft version, loader, Essential build, and mod list. Then:
- Check Essential’s current supported-version information.
- Choose a Minecraft version and loader supported by every required mod.
- Update the host profile first and launch it without inviting players.
- Back up the world before opening it with a changed mod set.
- Distribute the exact updated files and versions to every participant.
- Run a short test session before scheduling a longer group play session.
Essential’s homepage currently lists Minecraft 1.8, 1.12, and 1.16 through 1.21, but that list is not a permanent guarantee. Treat the current compatibility matrix and release files as authoritative when you install or upgrade.
Is Essential the right hosting method?
Essential is the simplest choice when one player can reliably host, the group is no larger than eight players, and everyone can maintain an identical modded profile. It avoids a separate server subscription and keeps world hosting inside the familiar Minecraft interface.
Its trade-offs are equally clear: the host must stay online, the host computer is responsible for the session, and modded players must match exactly. If the group needs a world that remains reachable while the original host is offline, Essential’s peer-to-peer model is the wrong fit; use a managed Minecraft server category instead.
