To configure a Palworld dedicated server, launch it once, then copy DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini to PalWorldSettings.ini in the server’s platform-specific configuration folder. Edit the copied file and restart the server; Palworld reads these settings during startup.

What the two configuration files do
A fresh dedicated-server installation normally includes a template named DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini. That template is not the file you should edit for a live server. Palworld uses a second file, PalWorldSettings.ini, for the active values. The practical workflow is therefore to preserve the default template, make a copy with the active filename, edit the copy, and restart the server.
The configuration directory is inside the server’s installation tree:

Those are relative paths. The exact absolute location depends on where you installed or deployed the dedicated server. If the directory does not exist yet, the server has probably not completed its first launch.
Prepare the server before changing anything
Launch once to create the folders
Start the dedicated server and allow it to finish its initial startup. Pocketpair’s configuration instructions use this first launch to create the saved-data and configuration directories. Stop the process cleanly after the folders appear, rather than editing files while the server is still writing them.
Make a recoverable copy
Before changing settings, copy the entire configuration folder somewhere outside the live server directory. Keep an additional copy of the original DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini. If a later edit prevents startup or produces unexpected behavior, you can restore the previous working file instead of rebuilding the configuration.
Confirm the platform folder
Do not place a Windows configuration in LinuxServer, or a Linux configuration in WindowsServer. A correctly named file in the wrong platform directory will not affect the running instance.

Step-by-step: create and edit PalWorldSettings.ini
- Start the server once. Wait for normal initialization, then stop it. This creates the
Pal/Saved/Confighierarchy. - Open the platform directory. Navigate to
Pal/Saved/Config/WindowsServeron Windows orPal/Saved/Config/LinuxServeron Linux. - Copy the template. Duplicate
DefaultPalWorldSettings.iniin the same directory. - Rename the duplicate exactly. Name the copy
PalWorldSettings.ini. Check that your operating system has not silently added a second extension such as.txt. - Open the active file in a plain-text editor. Avoid word processors that add formatting or replace punctuation. The community configuration guide describes the settings as one long
OptionSettings=(...)line; preserve that single-line structure when you edit it. See the Palworld server-settings guide. - Change only the values you intend to change. Keep parameter names, equals signs, commas, parentheses, and the surrounding structure intact. Do not remove options simply because you are not changing them.
- Save as plain text. Keep the filename and extension exactly as
PalWorldSettings.iniin the platform folder. - Restart the server. Palworld reads the settings at startup, so stopping and starting the process is required before a saved edit can take effect.
- Test one change at a time. Join the server, check the resulting behavior, and record the working value before changing another group of options.
Understanding the file’s format
Community documentation represents the active configuration as a single setting expression beginning with OptionSettings=( and ending with a closing parenthesis. Individual options are written inside that expression and separated by commas. This is not a conventional multi-section INI file, so adding a new section header or splitting the expression into arbitrary lines can make the file unreadable to the server.
Use the existing template as your syntax reference. Preserve capitalization in parameter names, use the value type already shown for each option, and leave unrelated entries untouched. If you need to make several changes, edit a copy first, then replace the live file only after the copy can be opened and saved without formatting changes.

- Verify that the file is
PalWorldSettings.ini, notPalWorldSettings.ini.txt. - Verify that it is beside
DefaultPalWorldSettings.iniin the active platform folder. - Verify that the server was stopped before saving and restarted afterward.
- Verify that you edited the server instance players actually connect to, especially when more than one installation exists.
Settings most administrators check first
The options below are the usual first priorities for a private or community server. The parameter names come from community configuration guidance, while the current defaults and supported ranges should be checked against Pocketpair’s maintained documentation at docs.palworldgame.com/settings-and-operation/configuration/. The available material does not establish every default, maximum, or limit, so do not treat an unverified figure as a guaranteed server rule.

Server name and discoverability
Use the server-name option shown in the template to give players a recognizable listing. Keep the name short enough to identify easily and avoid changing it while players are trying to connect; a name change can make an otherwise identical server look new in a browser or saved list. Because the exact parameter label and accepted characters can vary by version, copy the name field from the current template rather than inventing a new key.

Player limit
Set ServerPlayerMaxNum only after deciding how many simultaneous players your hardware and connection can support. A higher limit increases the number of possible active sessions, but it does not guarantee that the machine, upload bandwidth, or world simulation will remain responsive at that population. The often-repeated 32-player ceiling is not confirmed by the available official material; if the value is rejected or silently reduced, consult the current Pocketpair parameter page instead of assuming the guide’s limit applies to your build.
Passwords and administrator access
Community guides identify ServerPassword and AdminPassword as separate settings. Enter each in the appropriate field from the template and keep the administrator credential private. Do not post either password in public chat, screenshots, launch scripts, or support tickets. If players can join but administrative commands do not work, recheck that you changed the administrator field rather than only the player password, then restart the server.

Experience and capture rates
ExpRate and PalCaptureRate are commonly adjusted to make progression faster or slower. Decide the desired experience first—such as a modest boost for a small group—then make one change and test it. Guides conflict on whether experience has a hard cap, and the available evidence does not establish a universal limit. If an extreme value is ignored, clamped, or causes unexpected progression, return to a documented value and verify the current version’s rules.
Spawn-rate changes and CPU load
PalSpawnNumRate affects how many Pals are spawned. Community guidance warns that raising it can increase CPU demand. That warning is a capacity concern, not a guaranteed percentage increase: load depends on the world, player activity, hardware, and other settings. Apply small increments, watch CPU utilization and server responsiveness during normal play, and revert the change if simulation updates become delayed or players experience disconnects.

Restarting and verifying a change
Use a complete restart
Saving the file while the server is running is not enough. Stop the dedicated-server process, wait for it to exit, and start it again. Settings are read during startup according to the available configuration guidance. If your hosting panel has separate controls for stopping and starting, use those controls rather than merely closing a console window.
Test from the player’s perspective
- Connect using the server’s normal address and port.
- Check the server name and whether the password prompt behaves as expected.
- Join with a test account or trusted player and verify the player limit under realistic conditions.
- Perform a small action that exercises a changed rate, such as gaining experience or attempting a capture.
- Observe CPU use and responsiveness after any spawn-rate change.
Record the previous and new values in a simple change log. If a setting behaves differently than expected, the log lets you restore the last known-good configuration without guessing which edit caused the problem.

Troubleshooting: when settings appear not to work
The file is missing
Launch the server once and stop it cleanly. The configuration folders are created during initial startup. If they still do not appear, confirm that you are looking under the server installation’s Pal/Saved/Config directory and not under a client installation or an unrelated save location.
The server ignores every edit
- Check that the active filename is exactly
PalWorldSettings.ini. - Check that the file is in the correct Windows or Linux platform folder.
- Check for a hidden
.txtextension. - Confirm that the server was fully stopped before saving and restarted afterward.
- Confirm that your editor did not save a rich-text or encoded version that altered punctuation.
- Make sure you are editing the installation that the server process actually launches.
Only one option is ignored
Compare the parameter spelling and capitalization with the current template and the official parameter list. Do not substitute a remembered name from an older guide. The older Pocketpair page for version 0.1.5.1 is identified as unmaintained; use it only when you need historical context, not as the authority for a current server: Palworld configuration file (0.1.5.1).

The server fails after an edit
Stop the server, restore the last working copy, and start it again. Then reapply changes one at a time while preserving the original OptionSettings structure. A missing comma, altered parenthesis, accidental line break, or malformed value can prevent a setting from being parsed. Keeping a known-good backup makes recovery faster than trying to repair several edits simultaneously.
Players cannot connect after a password change
Confirm that players are using the new password and that the server was restarted after the edit. If the issue persists, restore the previous value to separate a password problem from a broader configuration or network problem. Avoid changing player limits, rates, and credentials in the same restart when you are diagnosing access.

Pocketpair’s currently reported configuration documentation is version 1.0.4, while the separate 0.1.5.1 page is older and marked unmaintained. Parameter names, defaults, accepted ranges, and available features can change between releases. When a community guide and the current official page disagree, follow the current official page for your server version and treat the guide as a navigation aid rather than proof of a limit.
Several details remain unverified in the available documentation: the default states of RCON and the REST API, the alleged 32-player cap, and a definitive cap for ExpRate. Do not publish or configure those values as facts without checking the current Pocketpair documentation for the exact release you run.
