How to Connect a Cable Box to an Xbox One’s HDMI-In Port

Use two HDMI cables: cable box HDMI OUT to Xbox One HDMI IN, then Xbox HDMI OUT to the TV. This guide covers setup, OneGuide caveats, receiver wiring, troubleshooting and HDCP capture limits.

Use two HDMI cables in this order: connect the cable or satellite box’s HDMI OUT to the Xbox One port marked HDMI IN, then connect the Xbox One’s HDMI OUT to an HDMI input on the TV. Turn on the devices and select that TV input. The Xbox passes the set-top box’s picture and sound through to the television.

What the Xbox One HDMI connection actually does

The Xbox One’s HDMI-in socket accepts an external video source. In this setup, the cable or satellite receiver remains the device that tunes channels, decodes the service and supplies the television signal. The Xbox is acting as a pass-through device between that receiver and the TV; it is not replacing the cable box or becoming a cable tuner.

The basic signal path is therefore:

Device Connection Purpose
Cable or satellite box HDMI OUT → Xbox One HDMI IN Sends the set-top box’s video and audio to the Xbox.
Xbox One HDMI OUT → TV HDMI input Passes the selected external signal to the television.
Television Input matching the connected HDMI socket Displays the Xbox dashboard or the cable box feed.

This direct arrangement is the basic configuration described in archived Xbox setup guidance dated June 8, 2015. It requires two HDMI connections. If you have only one cable, you cannot complete this chain until you have another suitable HDMI cable.

Check the equipment before changing cables

  • An Xbox One with both sockets labeled HDMI IN and HDMI OUT. Do not confuse HDMI-in with the Xbox’s HDMI-out connection to the television.
  • A cable or satellite box with an HDMI output. The box must be able to send its picture through that output.
  • A television with an available HDMI input.
  • Two standard HDMI cables. The archived instructions do not specify a special length, premium construction or particular HDMI feature.
  • Optional: an audio/video receiver, if your home-theater system normally routes video through one.

Turn off the cable box, Xbox One and TV before you move the plugs. Powering down avoids switching inputs while a connector is being changed and makes it easier to identify the final signal path. Keep the cable box’s remote available: channel selection still happens on the box unless a compatible Xbox live-TV interface is available on your console.

Direct connection: cable box to Xbox One to TV

  1. Locate the cable box’s HDMI output. Look for a socket labeled HDMI OUT or simply HDMI on the back of the receiver. Do not use a socket labeled HDMI input if the box has one.
  2. Connect the first HDMI cable. Plug one end into the cable box’s HDMI output and the other end into the Xbox One socket labeled HDMI IN. This is the only Xbox socket that should receive the set-top box signal.
  3. Connect the second HDMI cable. Plug one end into the Xbox One socket labeled HDMI OUT. Plug the other end into an available HDMI input on the TV, such as HDMI 1 or HDMI 2.
  4. Turn on the television and select the matching input. Use the TV remote’s Input, Source or HDMI button and choose the numbered socket used in the previous step. Choosing a different HDMI input will show “No signal” even when every cable is correctly connected.
  5. Power on the Xbox One and cable box. The TV should first show the Xbox dashboard or startup screen. Once the Xbox is running, the external HDMI feed can be displayed through the console’s TV or live-TV controls when those controls are available.
  6. Allow the cable box to finish starting. Some receivers take a minute or more to authenticate and begin outputting video. Leave the TV on the Xbox-connected input while the box completes its startup.

If the Xbox dashboard appears but the cable channel does not, the TV-to-Xbox connection is working. Concentrate your checks on the cable box’s power state, its HDMI output and the Xbox’s live-TV or pass-through control rather than replacing the TV cable immediately.

Showing live television through the Xbox

Xbox’s historical live-TV feature was called OneGuide. Xbox Wire described the Xbox One in April 2015 as a way to watch live television supplied by a cable or satellite box, and the archived setup material uses the same terminology. OneGuide availability, regional listings and current menu names are not established for every Xbox One console, account or software version, so do not assume that an identical app or guide appears today.

On a console that still exposes compatible live-TV controls, open the Xbox’s TV or live-TV area and choose the connected television source. The exact path and wording can vary with system software and region. If no live-TV option is present, you can still use the physical HDMI chain: select the TV input connected to the Xbox and use the cable box’s own remote to change channels.

The Xbox does not create channels when the set-top box is off, asleep or on a different output. For a reliable test, first tune a known channel on the box, confirm that its front-panel display indicates normal operation, and then check the Xbox-connected TV input.

Using an A/V receiver in the chain

A receiver is useful when it is already the central switch for your speakers and television, but it adds another link that can fail. The receiver version of the wiring is:

Step Connection
1 Cable box HDMI OUT → Xbox One HDMI IN
2 Xbox One HDMI OUT → an HDMI input on the A/V receiver
3 A/V receiver HDMI OUT → an HDMI input on the TV

Select the receiver input used by the Xbox, then select the TV input connected to the receiver’s output. Archived Xbox guidance notes that every device in this HDMI receiver path needs to support audio over HDMI. If the receiver does not handle the expected HDMI audio or video formats, use the direct Xbox-to-TV arrangement and connect audio separately according to the receiver’s capabilities.

When diagnosing a receiver setup, temporarily remove it from the chain. Connect Xbox HDMI OUT directly to the TV. If the picture returns, the receiver’s selected input, output, HDMI settings or compatibility is the likely issue; the cable box and Xbox ports have already demonstrated that they can pass a signal in the simpler arrangement.

What this setup can—and cannot—promise

  • It can pass the cable box’s HDMI picture and sound to the TV when the box, Xbox, television and any receiver agree on the signal.
  • It does not turn the Xbox into a cable receiver. Subscription authorization, channel tuning and encrypted service remain functions of the provider’s box.
  • It does not guarantee a particular resolution. Compatibility depends on the Xbox One model, firmware, cable box, television and any receiver. The available evidence does not establish a universal 4K pass-through or resolution limit for every Xbox One combination.
  • It does not guarantee current guide software. OneGuide instructions in archived material describe a historical feature; present menus and regional availability can differ.

For ordinary viewing, the most dependable goal is simply a working HDMI path and a TV input that displays it. Avoid changing several video settings at once; if the signal disappears, you will not know which change caused the problem.

Troubleshooting a blank screen or missing audio

Symptom Checks to make
TV says “No signal” Confirm the TV is on the HDMI input connected to Xbox HDMI OUT. Verify that the cable box is connected to Xbox HDMI IN, not HDMI OUT, and that both devices are powered on.
Xbox dashboard appears, but the cable channel is black Check that the cable box has finished starting and is tuned to an active channel. Reseat the cable-box-to-Xbox cable and verify that the box is outputting through HDMI.
No picture or sound after adding a receiver Check the receiver’s selected input and HDMI output, then test Xbox HDMI OUT directly into the TV. All devices in the receiver path must support audio over HDMI for the archived receiver arrangement.
Picture works directly from the box to the TV but not through Xbox The direct test establishes that the box and its HDMI output work. Recheck port order, try the other HDMI cable in the chain, and test the Xbox with the TV connection made directly to HDMI OUT.
Picture cuts out after changing channels Wait for the box to complete a channel change and re-authenticate. If the interruption persists, power-cycle the box, Xbox and TV, then reconnect them in the direct arrangement without a receiver.
Audio is missing while video works Check the TV’s audio output and the cable box’s HDMI audio setting. In a receiver setup, confirm that the receiver accepts audio over HDMI from the Xbox path.
OneGuide or a TV menu is missing Do not treat the missing menu as proof that the wiring is wrong. The archived OneGuide feature and its labels are not confirmed for every current console, region or software version; use the cable box remote and the TV’s Xbox input for basic viewing.

When the cause is unclear, perform a direct diagnostic connection: cable box HDMI OUT to the TV’s HDMI input. This is a general troubleshooting step rather than a guarantee of compatibility. If the direct connection fails, investigate the box, service authorization, TV input or cable first. If it succeeds but the Xbox path fails, restore the two-link Xbox arrangement and focus on the Xbox ports, its software state and the second HDMI cable.

Why a capture card may show a black screen

Connecting the box through Xbox does not make a protected television signal recordable. Elgato’s support documentation explains that copy protection can remain through the Xbox and that cable and satellite HDMI video is usually protected by HDCP. A capture device may therefore display a black screen or refuse to record even though the TV shows the channel normally.

HDCP is a content-protection mechanism, not evidence that the HDMI cables are in the wrong sockets. If your goal is recording or streaming, check the capture hardware’s documented supported sources and the provider’s terms. Do not assume that routing the signal through Xbox removes protection or creates a lawful recording path.

Practical connection checklist

  • Two HDMI cables are available.
  • The set-top box output goes to Xbox HDMI IN.
  • Xbox HDMI OUT goes to the TV, or to the receiver input in a receiver-based system.
  • The TV or receiver is set to the matching HDMI input.
  • The cable box is powered on and tuned to a working channel.
  • The Xbox dashboard appears before you troubleshoot live-TV controls.
  • OneGuide instructions are treated as historical and software-dependent, not as a guaranteed current menu path.
  • Capture expectations account for HDCP on cable and satellite sources.

If these checks pass, the direct cable-box → Xbox One → TV arrangement is complete. Leave the cable box connected to Xbox HDMI IN and the TV connected to Xbox HDMI OUT; changing that direction is the most common wiring mistake when the setup is moved later.
