FTB Beyond is an open-ended, kitchen-sink modpack for Minecraft 1.10.2, not a tightly scripted expert pack. Start by securing food, shelter, tools and storage; then build a dependable resource and power loop before committing to one technology or magic system. Beyond does not have a universally confirmed, built-in quest-book route, so your installed instance—not a generic online checklist—should decide exact recipes, mods and progression.

FTB Beyond is an official Feed The Beast pack targeting Minecraft 1.10.2. CurseForge lists its release date as September 22, 2017. The publisher describes it as “the pack for all people”: a general-purpose collection intended for solo worlds and small- to medium-population servers. That positioning explains the pack’s unusual freedom. You can build a technical base, pursue magic, explore dimensions, automate farming, or combine several approaches without following one mandatory chapter order.

Does FTB Beyond have quests?
Do not assume that installing an FTB-branded pack gives you a populated quest book. Community reports describe Beyond as a 1.10.2 kitchen-sink pack with no built-in quest book. That is community evidence rather than a guarantee for every redistributed or modified instance, so check your own world before planning around it.

FTB Quests is a separate mod. It supplies a customizable quest interface, while FTB Teams can provide shared progression. Their existence proves that the technology is available to modpack authors; it does not prove that Beyond ships with authored quests. If your installation contains a quest button or book, open it and inspect whether chapters and rewards are actually populated. If it is empty or absent, play Beyond as a self-directed pack.
What the lack of quests changes
- There is no confirmed, universal “chapter one to chapter ten” route to reproduce.
- You choose goals such as reliable power, automated ore processing, a farm, a dimension trip or a major multiblock.
- Progress is best measured by capability—renewable inputs, storage, processing and recovery plans—rather than by quest completion.
- If you want guided teaching, select a pack explicitly marketed around tutorials or quest progression instead of expecting Beyond to provide it.
How to install Beyond
Use the official Feed The Beast app/catalog or the CurseForge FTB Beyond listing. Launcher layouts and button labels change, so look for the current catalog entry rather than following a screenshot from an older release.
- Install the official launcher you intend to use and sign in with the account it requires.
- Open the pack catalog, search for FTB Beyond, and confirm that the listing targets Minecraft 1.10.2.
- Choose the install or create-instance action. Let the launcher download the pack files instead of copying a modern mod set into the instance.
- Open the created profile and review its version, memory allocation and directory before launching.
- Start the game once with no extra mods or configuration edits. On first launch, allow time for legacy assets to load.
- Create a test world. Check that the title screen, controls, recipe/information interface and expected folders appear before investing in a long-term save.
If you install through another catalog, compare the profile’s manifest with the official listing. A third-party update or an added mod can change recipes and invalidate advice written for the original pack.
What to do in your first session
The opening objective is not a particular machine. It is a safe, recoverable base that can supply the materials needed for experimentation.

- Mark your starting area. Record coordinates or place a visible marker near the first shelter. Legacy worlds can become difficult to relocate after long exploration.
- Secure food. Gather enough food for mining, combat and travel, then begin a renewable source as soon as practical. Depending on your chosen systems, that may be crops, animals or another farm mechanic visible in your instance.
- Build a temporary shelter. Include a bed, light, a door or other reliable entry control, and room for chests. A compact structure is easier to defend and reorganize than a sprawling first base.
- Make basic tools and torches. Keep spare pickaxes and fuel or light materials in a dedicated chest so a death does not erase your only mining kit.
- Create a storage zone. Separate building blocks, ores, mob drops, food, tools and unknown components. Label containers if your storage system supports it.
- Start a mining loop. Gather stone, coal or equivalent fuel, common metals and the materials shown as prerequisites for your first chosen machines or devices. Do not mine randomly until your inventory is full; maintain a written list of what the next two or three dependencies require.
- Inspect recipes before crafting. Use the installed recipe browser or in-game documentation to check both direct ingredients and subcomponents. In a 1.10.2 pack, an apparently familiar recipe may use different plates, circuits, fluids or machine steps.
- Choose a temporary direction. Pick one technology or magic line for the next milestone. You can change direction later; the point is to let early materials and machines reinforce one another.
- Build only the infrastructure you can support. Add a basic power source, processing block or ritual setup when your resource loop can feed it. Avoid spending your entire stock on a machine that leaves no fuel, cables, storage or replacement parts.
- Make a backup. Copy the world before a major configuration change, dimension trip or large multiblock project.
Stabilize the base before chasing expensive content
Once the first shelter works, turn it into a small production base. Stability removes the frustration that makes an open-ended pack feel directionless.
Food and renewable inputs
A renewable food supply is more valuable than a larger starter house. Grow enough to cover ordinary mining and travel, then expand only when the harvest or breeding cycle is reliable. Apply the same rule to wood, common building blocks and any reagent your selected system consumes repeatedly. If an input is needed every few minutes, it deserves a farm or another repeatable source before you pursue decorative upgrades.

Ore processing and fuel
Identify how your installed pack handles ore doubling or other processing improvements. The exact blocks and recipes are version-dependent, so follow the in-game recipe chain rather than a modern machine list. Establish a predictable supply of fuel or power, and reserve a small emergency stock separately from your active machines.
Storage and item flow
Organized storage is progression infrastructure. Keep raw ores separate from processed metals, components from finished machines, and items reserved for quests or experiments from everyday building materials. Add item transport only when hand-carrying has become a measurable bottleneck; a complicated network built too early consumes time and resources without solving an urgent problem.

Power planning
Pick one primary power approach for the current stage and learn its constraints: fuel type, generation rate, storage, transfer and machine consumption. Leave room to expand and keep a backup source if a failed generator would halt every machine. Do not infer exact energy-unit values from a current mod guide; 1.10.2 implementations and pack configurations can differ.
Choosing a technology or magic lane
Beyond’s open design allows many combinations, but pursuing every branch at once scatters scarce metals and components. Commit temporarily, not permanently.

Keep a dependency ledger
For every major machine, write three levels: the final device, its immediate components, and the ores, fluids or machines needed to make those components. Mark each item as available, renewable or still a bottleneck. This simple ledger prevents the common mistake of crafting a high-tier block while lacking the cables, casing, fuel or processing step that makes it useful.
Automation priorities that pay off
Automation should remove repetition, not create a second job maintaining an oversized factory.

- Automate the input you craft most often. Food, wood, fuel, common metals or a frequently used component usually produce the quickest benefit.
- Automate collection. A farm without item pickup, a generator without fuel delivery or a machine without output storage still demands constant attention.
- Protect throughput. Check whether the slowest machine, power transfer or storage buffer limits the entire chain. Upgrading a fast machine does nothing if its input chest remains empty.
- Separate critical and experimental lines. Keep the power and processing that sustain your base away from machines you are testing. A failed configuration should not stop food production.
- Scale after measuring. Add parallel machines only when a real backlog exists. Excess capacity consumes resources and can overload an early power system.
Exploration, dimensions and high-cost projects
Dimensions, bosses and expensive machines are sensible mid- or late-stage goals, but their value depends on preparation rather than a prescribed quest order.
Use a recovery plan
- Back up the world immediately before major dimension travel or configuration edits.
- Carry replaceable tools, food, light and a way to mark your route; leave irreplaceable materials at home.
- Store a spare kit near the portal or departure point.
- Record coordinates and portal links in a written note.
- Confirm that your destination’s hazards, travel rules and return method are understood from the installed documentation.
Do not treat a boss or dimension as mandatory simply because another player’s playthrough did. In an open pack, exploration is a goal you select after the base can absorb a setback.
Multiplayer advice
Beyond is positioned for small and medium-population servers, but cooperative play works best when responsibilities are explicit.
- Define shared storage. Agree which chests are communal and which are personal; label inputs reserved for a machine chain.
- Assign infrastructure. One player can maintain food and farms, another power and processing, and another exploration or building. Rotate tasks if the group prefers equal ownership.
- Document changes. Record machine upgrades, altered configurations and portal coordinates in a shared book or server note.
- Use teams only if available. If your installed instance includes FTB Teams or another progression interface, verify how claims and shared progress are configured before relying on them.
- Back up on a schedule. Server operators should retain a recent copy before pack updates, dimension changes and major construction.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Following a modern recipe guide
Symptom: the listed ingredient or machine does not exist, or the recipe does not work. Fix: check the installed profile’s Minecraft version and use the local recipe browser. Search by the output you need, then inspect each intermediate component.

Building every machine immediately
Symptom: scattered materials, no fuel and a base full of idle blocks. Fix: choose one milestone, list its dependencies and craft only the machines that advance that chain or provide a clear infrastructure benefit.
Ignoring storage until late
Symptom: repeated mining trips and lost components. Fix: reserve a compact, labeled storage area at the start, then expand or automate it when manual sorting becomes the bottleneck.

Symptom: a death, portal problem or configuration mistake threatens the world. Fix: restore the most recent backup, replace the lost kit from your emergency chest and postpone the next trip until the route and equipment are documented.
Assuming a quest book must exist
Symptom: you spend time searching for chapters that are not present. Fix: inspect the installed instance once. If no populated book appears, set your own milestones—renewable food, processing, automation, exploration and a chosen end goal.
A practical milestone checklist
- Foundation: shelter, bed, food, torches, tools and labeled storage.
- Stability: renewable food and common materials, a mining loop, fuel or power and basic processing.
- Direction: one technology or magic lane with a written dependency list.
- Automation: repeatable inputs, collection and output storage before decorative expansion.
- Resilience: emergency supplies, world backups and documented coordinates.
- Expansion: larger power, advanced processing, dimensions, bosses or major multiblocks when the base can recover from failure.
What you should verify in your own installation
Beyond is old enough that launcher profiles, community distributions and local configuration changes can produce different experiences. Before publishing a recipe list or following a machine-specific plan, verify:
- the profile still targets Minecraft 1.10.2;
- the launcher’s manifest and installed mod list;
- whether a quest interface is present and populated;
- the recipe browser’s outputs, alternatives and machine steps;
- world and server configuration changes that affect generation, power or progression.
Those checks are more reliable than assuming every Beyond instance matches a current video, a newer mod version or another server’s configuration.
Bottom line: how to play Beyond
Play FTB Beyond as a sandbox with optional self-imposed milestones, not as a linear expert pack. Build a safe and renewable foundation, select one branch long enough to make its dependencies useful, automate the work you repeat, and explore only after you have a backup and recovery kit. If your copy contains a populated quest book, use it as an additional guide; if it does not, the pack’s general-purpose design is intentional rather than a missing tutorial.
