You can connect a PS5 DualSense or DualSense Edge controller to Steam using either a USB-C data cable or Bluetooth. USB is the most reliable starting point—and the connection Sony specifies for supported PC haptic feedback. After Windows connects the controller, Steam Input determines whether a particular game uses it directly, translates it for compatibility, or needs a per-game adjustment.
What you need
- A DualSense or DualSense Edge controller
- A Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11 PC
- Steam
- Either a USB-C cable that supports data or a Bluetooth-equipped PC
- A charged controller
Sony also provides the PlayStation Accessories app for Windows. Use it to update controller firmware and customize a DualSense Edge. It is optional for basic Steam connectivity.

Connect the DualSense with USB
- Turn on your PC.
- Connect the controller with a USB-C data cable.
- Press the PS button if the controller does not activate automatically.
- Open Steam and select Steam > Settings > Controller.
- Confirm that Steam lists the connected controller.
- Launch your game.
A cable can charge the controller without carrying input data. If Steam does not detect it, try a known-good data cable and another USB port.

Connect the DualSense over Bluetooth
- Disconnect the controller from the PS5, or turn the console off temporarily.
- If the controller is on, hold the PS button until it turns off.
- Disconnect the USB cable.
- Hold the Create button—the small button to the left of the touchpad—and the PS button together until the light bar flashes.
- Open your PC’s Bluetooth settings.
- Select Wireless Controller from the available devices.
- Open Steam and check Steam > Settings > Controller.
Bluetooth is convenient, but reliability depends on the PC’s adapter, drivers, distance, interference and power-management settings. A desktop without Bluetooth needs a compatible adapter. USB remains the better choice for initial setup and for supported PC haptics.
#1 Best Overall
- Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
- Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
- Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.

Make Steam use the controller in a game
Steam detecting the DualSense and a game accepting it are separate steps. To change behavior for one game:
- Open your Steam Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open the Controller tab.
- Find the game-specific controller override. Depending on Steam’s current interface, the choices may include Use Default Settings, Enable Steam Input and Disable Steam Input.
Steam’s labels and layout can change, so look for the per-game Steam Input override rather than relying on one exact wording.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →When to enable Steam Input
Try Enable Steam Input when:
- The game does not recognize the DualSense.
- The game expects an Xbox/XInput-style controller.
- You need custom button mapping, gyro controls or a community layout.
- You are playing an older game with limited PlayStation-controller support.
Steam Input acts as a compatibility and configuration layer. It can make more games playable, but it may present the controller as a virtual gamepad and change the prompts or advanced-feature behavior.

When to disable Steam Input
Try Disable Steam Input when:
- The game has native DualSense support.
- Steam Input causes duplicate inputs or two controllers to appear.
- The game shows Xbox prompts even though native PlayStation prompts should be available.
- Haptics or adaptive triggers stop working.
There is no universal best setting. Start with the game’s default, then change only that game’s override. Restart the game after changing it.
Native DualSense support versus Steam Input
| Approach | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Native DualSense support | Games with built-in PlayStation prompts, haptics or adaptive triggers | Only works when the game implements those features |
| Steam Input | Older games, XInput-focused games, remapping and community layouts | May produce Xbox prompts, virtual-controller conflicts or missing native features |
Steam Input improves compatibility; it does not guarantee that every Steam game supports controllers or every DualSense feature.
Which DualSense features work on PC?
| Feature | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Buttons and analog sticks | Usually work over USB, Bluetooth or Steam Input when the game supports controllers. |
| Standard vibration | Depends on the game, its settings and the active input method. |
| Haptic feedback | Game-dependent. Sony states that PC haptic feedback requires a USB connection when supported. |
| Adaptive triggers | Available only in games that implement them, and implementation can depend on native DualSense support. |
| Touchpad and gyro | Game- and configuration-dependent; Steam Input can map them in supported layouts. |
| Microphone and speaker | Supported on Windows when the game supports them. |
| Headset jack | Requires a wired PC connection according to Sony. |
| DualSense Edge profiles | Configured through PlayStation Accessories on PC. |
Connecting the controller does not automatically unlock advanced features. The game must support them, and Steam Input can sometimes replace the native DualSense path.

Why does the game show Xbox button prompts?
Xbox-style prompts do not necessarily mean the controller is failing. Common explanations include:
Rank #3
- Feel you in-game actions and environement simulated through haptic feedback
- Experience varying force and tension at your fingertips with adaptive triggers
- Chat online through the built-in microphone
- Connect a headset directly via the 3.5mm jack
- Switch voice capture on and off using the dedicated mute button
- The game has no PlayStation button artwork.
- Steam Input is presenting a virtual XInput controller.
- The game’s native DualSense mode is disabled.
- The game supports only XInput.
The controller can function correctly while the on-screen symbols show A, B, X and Y. Native PlayStation prompts require support from the game or an appropriate configuration.
Troubleshooting common problems
Steam does not detect the controller
- Replace the USB cable with a known-good data cable.
- Try another USB port.
- Disconnect the controller from the PS5 and other paired devices.
- Restart Steam, then restart the PC if necessary.
- Update the controller with PlayStation Accessories.
- Remove and recreate the Bluetooth pairing.
- Check whether Windows itself lists the controller.
- Close third-party remapping applications.
- If pairing remains stuck, press the small reset button on the controller’s rear with a suitable pin.
Charging is not proof that the USB connection carries data.
The game does not respond, although Steam does
Open the game’s Properties > Controller page and test Steam Input enabled and disabled. Restart the game after each change. Also check the game’s own controller setting, connect only one gamepad, and close remapping programs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThere are duplicate inputs or two controllers
This usually means more than one input path is active. Steam Input may be creating a virtual controller while the game also sees the physical DualSense. DS4Windows, InputMapper and similar tools can create the same conflict. Steam documents that external remappers may cause it to interact with an emulated Xbox controller instead of the physical PlayStation controller.

- Close external remapping applications.
- Disconnect either the USB or Bluetooth connection if both are active.
- Disconnect other gamepads.
- Restart Steam.
- Test the game’s Steam Input override one setting at a time.
There is no vibration or haptic feedback
Confirm that vibration is enabled in the game and that the title supports DualSense features. For PC haptics, connect the controller by USB. Then test native support by disabling Steam Input for that game. Update firmware if the behavior remains abnormal.
Sony’s guidance does not promise wireless PC haptics: supported PC haptic feedback requires USB.
Adaptive triggers do not work
Adaptive triggers are not a general Windows feature. The game must implement them, and the feature may require native DualSense support and a USB connection. A successful pairing alone is not enough.

Using a DualSense with non-Steam games
You can try adding a title through Steam > Library > Add a Game > Add a Non-Steam Game. This may allow Steam Input to handle the controller, but it is not guaranteed to solve compatibility problems. Another launcher, elevated permissions, overlays or anti-cheat systems can change how the game sees virtual controllers.
Third-party remappers are an optional fallback for a specific XInput-only game or launcher. They are not required for ordinary Steam use and can cause duplicate inputs or interfere with native haptics.
Steam Deck and Linux
DualSense controllers are also relevant to SteamOS and Linux, but Bluetooth menus, firmware tools and controller behavior differ from Windows. Do not assume that Windows instructions or the PlayStation Accessories app apply identically on Steam Deck. For a Steam Deck, begin with the Deck’s own Bluetooth settings and Steam’s per-game controller options.
Quick checklist
- Use a USB-C data cable for the first setup.
- Disconnect the controller from the PS5 before Bluetooth pairing.
- Pair Bluetooth as Wireless Controller.
- Confirm detection at Steam > Settings > Controller.
- Use the affected game’s Properties > Controller override.
- Enable Steam Input for compatibility and remapping.
- Disable it when native DualSense support conflicts with Steam Input.
- Use USB for supported PC haptics.
- Update firmware if detection or advanced features are unreliable.
- Close third-party remappers before diagnosing duplicate inputs.
- Restart the game after changing controller settings.
