Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteAn HDMI cable usually cannot connect a PS5 directly to a PC and turn the PC into a display. The PS5 sends video through its HDMI output, while most desktop and laptop HDMI ports also send video out rather than receiving it. Unless your specific computer has a documented HDMI input, use one of these setups:
- Playing on a monitor: connect the PS5 directly to the monitor.
- Displaying, recording, or streaming on a PC or laptop: connect the PS5 to a capture card, then connect the capture card to the computer by USB.
- Using a laptop without extra hardware: use PlayStation Remote Play.
First, check whether your HDMI port is an input
HDMI ports have a direction:
- HDMI output sends a computer’s picture to a monitor or TV.
- HDMI input receives video from an external device such as a PS5.
The PS5’s port is labelled HDMI OUT. Most laptop HDMI ports and graphics-card HDMI ports on desktop PCs are also outputs. Plugging the PS5 into one of them normally produces no picture because the computer has no hardware that can receive the signal.
Do not assume every computer is output-only: some specialized laptops, all-in-one computers, monitors, and video-production systems have HDMI input. Check the exact model’s specifications for the words HDMI-in or HDMI input. If they are not explicitly listed, assume the port cannot receive the PS5 signal.
Choose the right setup
| What you want to do | Best method | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Play on a desk monitor | PS5 directly to the monitor | The PC does not process the PS5 signal |
| Use a laptop screen | USB capture card or PS Remote Play | Capture previews or network streaming can add delay |
| Record or stream gameplay | Capture card plus OBS Studio | HDCP must be disabled for gameplay capture |
| Minimize input delay while capturing | Capture card with HDMI passthrough | Requires a monitor or TV and an additional HDMI cable |
| Avoid buying hardware | PS Remote Play | Quality depends on the network |
Option 1: Connect the PS5 directly to a monitor
If you only want to play PS5 games at a desk, this is the simplest and usually the lowest-latency solution. It does not connect the PS5 to the PC; it uses the monitor as a separate display.

- Turn off the PS5 or place it in rest mode.
- Connect one end of an HDMI cable to the PS5’s HDMI OUT port.
- Connect the other end to the monitor’s HDMI IN port.
- Select that HDMI input using the monitor’s input button or menu.
- Turn on the PS5 and connect the DualSense controller, wirelessly or by USB.
Sony recommends connecting the PS5 directly to a TV or display’s HDMI port. See its PS5 hardware support page for display and connection guidance.
Monitor considerations
- One HDMI input: use DisplayPort for the PC if available, or switch the HDMI cable between the PC and PS5.
- Multiple HDMI inputs: you can leave both devices connected and switch inputs.
- HDMI 2.1: it may be necessary for the PS5’s highest supported refresh-rate modes, but the PS5, cable, monitor, game, and selected output settings must all support the mode.
- Audio: monitors with speakers or a headphone output can play audio from the PS5. If the monitor has neither, connect headphones to the DualSense controller or use another compatible audio solution.
Option 2: Use a USB capture card with the PC
A capture card converts the PS5’s HDMI signal into a video source that the computer can receive through USB. This is the normal solution when you need to use a laptop screen, record gameplay, stream, add overlays, or process the signal in software.
What you need
- A PS5.
- A PC or laptop with a compatible USB port.
- An external capture card with an HDMI input and USB connection.
- One HDMI cable for capture-only use, or two HDMI cables when using passthrough.
- OBS Studio or the capture card’s software if you want to record or stream.
For a laptop, choose an external USB capture card. An internal PCIe capture card is an option for a desktop with a free PCIe slot, but it is not suitable for most laptops.
Capture-only connection
PS5 HDMI OUT → capture card HDMI IN → USB → PC or laptop
In this arrangement, you view the game inside OBS or another capture application. It can work for casual gaming and is useful for recording, but the software preview may have noticeable delay.

Capture card with HDMI passthrough
PS5 HDMI OUT → capture card HDMI IN
capture card HDMI OUT → monitor or TV HDMI IN
capture card USB → PC or laptop
Passthrough sends the signal directly to a monitor or TV while the computer receives a separate USB feed for recording or streaming. You play from the monitor’s direct HDMI feed rather than from the OBS preview, making this the preferred arrangement for fast-action or latency-sensitive games.

- Uninterrupted speed and maximum visual performance
- Transmits 4K resolution at 120 Hz and 8k resolution at 60 Hz as specified in HDMI 2.1
- Supports up to 48 Gbps bandwidth
Elgato’s PS5 capture setup guide shows this HDMI-input, HDMI-output, and USB signal path.
Set up the capture card
- Connect the PS5 directly to a TV or monitor first.
- On the PS5, open Settings → System → HDMI.
- Set Enable HDCP to Off.
- Disconnect the PS5 from the display.
- Connect PS5 HDMI OUT to the capture card’s HDMI IN.
- If using passthrough, connect the card’s HDMI OUT to the monitor or TV.
- Connect the capture card to the PC or laptop with its USB cable, preferably to a compatible USB 3.x port.
- Select the correct HDMI input on the monitor or TV.
HDCP is a content-protection system enabled by default on the PS5. Capture devices cannot use a protected signal in the documented capture workflow, so the preview may be black until HDCP is disabled. Disabling it is for gameplay capture; it does not mean protected films or other protected media can be recorded. See Elgato’s HDCP guidance.
Configure OBS Studio
OBS is not required merely to play a PS5 through a monitor. It is useful when the computer must display, record, stream, or otherwise process the capture feed.
- Install OBS Studio from the official OBS website.
- Open OBS and create or select a scene.
- Under Sources, select +.
- Choose Video Capture Device.
- Select the capture card from the device list.
- Start with the device’s default resolution and frame rate.
- Confirm that video appears and that the audio meter responds.
- Select Start Recording or configure a service and select Start Streaming.
OBS’s console-capture FAQ identifies a capture device added as a Video Capture Device source. For broad compatibility, OBS also recommends capture devices that support USB Video Class, particularly on macOS and Linux.
Option 3: Use PS Remote Play without HDMI
PS Remote Play is the simplest software alternative when you want to use a laptop but do not want a capture card. It sends the PS5’s video over a network to an app on Windows or macOS; it is not an HDMI connection.

Sony’s current Remote Play requirements page lists Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11, along with supported macOS versions that currently extend through macOS Tahoe. Requirements and supported versions can change, so check Sony’s page before installing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRemote Play avoids a capture card and works with laptops that have no HDMI input. However, responsiveness and image quality depend on network conditions, Wi-Fi congestion, the distance between the console and computer, and the devices involved. It is generally less suitable than a direct display connection for competitive games.
Choosing a capture card
Choose based on the signal you need to preserve, not simply on the maximum number printed on the product box.
- Basic 1080p60 capture: suitable for recording, streaming, tutorials, and casual play. Confirm USB compatibility and supported input formats.
- 4K passthrough with lower-resolution capture: some cards can pass a 4K signal to the display while recording at a lower resolution. Elgato’s HD60 X, for example, lists 4K60 HDR10 passthrough and 1080p60 HDR recording; those are different capabilities. Check its technical specifications.
- HDMI 2.1 or high-refresh-rate setups: a device such as AVerMedia’s Live Gamer ULTRA 2.1 may be appropriate, but its limits vary by operating system, software, USB connection, display, and selected format.
- Low-latency gaming: prioritize HDMI passthrough so the monitor receives a direct display feed.
Do not assume HDMI 2.1 automatically delivers 4K/120 Hz. The PS5 model, game, HDMI cables, capture-card input and passthrough, display, HDR, VRR, USB bandwidth, operating system, and software must all support the chosen mode. A capture card’s passthrough specification is also separate from its recording specification.

Fix a black screen or no signal
The laptop shows nothing after connecting HDMI
This almost always means the laptop’s HDMI port is output-only. Use a capture card, PS Remote Play, or connect the PS5 directly to a monitor or TV. Do not expect Windows or macOS to turn an output port into an input through a setting.
The capture card is detected but the preview is black
- Confirm Settings → System → HDMI → Enable HDCP → Off on the PS5.
- Check that the PS5 is connected to the capture card’s HDMI IN, not its HDMI OUT.
- If using passthrough, connect the display to the card’s HDMI OUT.
- Select the correct input on the display.
- Connect the card to a compatible high-speed USB port.
- Try a resolution and refresh rate supported by the capture card.
- Update the capture card’s firmware and software where applicable.
- Test each HDMI cable and connect the PS5 directly to a display to isolate the faulty part.
The PS5 says no signal
Check cable seating, the monitor input, the PS5 HDMI OUT port, and the capture card’s direction markings. Test the PS5 directly on the monitor first. If the direct connection works, reconnect the capture chain one part at a time. A display or capture card may not support the PS5’s selected resolution or refresh rate.
There is video but no sound
Check the capture source’s audio settings and monitoring options in OBS, the capture card’s audio controls, and the PS5 output-device settings. A headset connected to the DualSense can redirect audio away from HDMI. Game audio, microphone audio, and party chat may use different routes, so party-chat capture is not automatic.
The picture is delayed
You are probably playing through the capture software preview. Use a capture card with HDMI passthrough and play from the connected monitor or TV. Passthrough is intended to provide a direct display path; it is not the same as viewing the USB feed inside OBS.

Bottom line
A normal HDMI cable is not enough to connect a PS5 directly to most PCs or laptops. For the simplest gaming setup, connect the PS5 straight to a monitor. To make the computer receive the PS5 signal, use a capture card and USB; for the best playing experience while recording or streaming, use HDMI passthrough. If you want to avoid additional hardware, use PS Remote Play and accept its network-dependent latency and image quality.
