To connect a wireless-capable PSP, open Settings > Network Settings > Infrastructure Mode > New Connection, scan for your access point, choose the matching security option, enter the exact network key, select Easy, save the profile, and run Test Connection. Most failures come from an incorrect SSID or key, an unsupported security mode, a disabled wireless function, or a mismatch between the PSP model and the instructions.

What you need before starting

PSP Infrastructure Mode uses a wireless LAN access point or wireless broadband router to reach the Internet. Sony describes the mode this way: “This mode is used for connecting the PSP™ system to the Internet using a wireless LAN access point.” You therefore need more than the handheld itself.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • A PSP model with wireless LAN hardware and a charged battery or power connected.
  • An operating Internet service and a working modem, network device, wireless access point, or router.
  • The network name (SSID) and the access point’s encryption key.
  • Enough access to the router settings to confirm its security mode, or a network administrator who can provide those details.

Check the model number printed on the PSP before following menu instructions. Sony publishes separate documentation for models such as the PSP-3004 and PSP-E1002/E1003, and menu labels or wireless capabilities can vary by model, software version, and region. Do not assume that a procedure documented for one model applies unchanged to another.

There is no required purchase for the basic setup. Start with the PSP, the existing access point, and the router’s documented SSID, security mode, and key. A travel router or additional access point is only an optional tool if its specifications explicitly provide a compatible configuration; buying hardware cannot correct a mistyped key, a disabled wireless function, or an online service that has shut down.

Connect the PSP to Wi‑Fi: the complete setup

1. Open Infrastructure Mode

  1. From the PSP Home Menu, select Settings.
  2. Open Network Settings.
  3. Select Infrastructure Mode.
  4. Choose New Connection.

Infrastructure Mode is the option for connecting through a nearby access point. Ad Hoc Mode is for direct PSP-to-PSP communication and is not the normal route to the Internet. If Infrastructure Mode is missing, stop and verify the exact model and its manual instead of trying to force a different menu path.

2. Find the access point

  1. Select Scan. The PSP searches for nearby access points and displays the SSID and security information it can read.
  2. Highlight the network you intend to use and confirm that its SSID is the one shown on the router or supplied by the network administrator.

If the network is deliberately hidden, choose the option to enter it manually and type the SSID exactly. Manual entry only supplies the name; it does not make an incompatible radio, security mode, or access point work. A manually entered name that still fails should send you back to compatibility and security checks, not to repeated guesses at the SSID.

3. Match the security setting

When the PSP asks for security, select the option that corresponds to the access point. Sony’s documented PSP choices include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
PSP option What it means What to verify on the router
WEP An older wireless encryption method. The router must actually be configured for WEP and provide the correct key format.
WPA-PSK (TKIP) WPA-PSK using TKIP encryption. Use this only when the access point reports the same mode.
WPA-PSK (AES) WPA-PSK using AES encryption. Use this only when the access point reports the same mode.

WPA2 and WPA3 are not listed on the cited PSP advanced-settings page. If a router is configured only for a security mode that the PSP does not expose, treat compatibility as the likely issue rather than repeatedly typing the same password. The router’s documentation or administrator is the authority for its available modes. Do not describe this as proof that every router or every firmware version is incompatible; compare the specific menus on both devices.

4. Enter the network key exactly

Type the encryption key supplied for that access point. The PSP may mask characters as you enter them, so compare every character with the router’s label or configuration screen before continuing. Check uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and punctuation; a key that is almost correct is still wrong. If the router has more than one wireless profile, make sure the key belongs to the SSID selected in the PSP rather than to a similarly named guest or secondary network.

5. Use Easy for ordinary home networks

  1. After entering the key, choose Easy when the PSP asks how to set the address.
  2. Review the connection name and settings.
  3. Save the connection profile.
  4. Select Test Connection.

Easy automatically supplies the basic address settings in a typical network. Choose Custom only when you have correct manual IP-address, DNS, proxy, or browser values from a network administrator or Internet provider. Guessing those values can turn a working wireless association into a failed Internet test. Custom is not a faster or stronger Wi‑Fi mode; it simply exposes settings that Easy normally handles automatically.

What the connection test actually tells you

Run the test immediately after saving the profile. It helps separate an error in the PSP profile from a problem farther upstream. A failure during network association points you back to the SSID, security selection, key, or wireless availability. A failure after association points more toward address, DNS, proxy, Internet-service, or router configuration.

When the test fails, reopen the saved Infrastructure Mode profile and compare each field with the router: SSID, security type, key, and address method. Follow the on-screen guidance, consult the access point’s instructions, or ask the Internet provider or network administrator for the required values. Do not switch to Custom merely because Easy failed unless someone can supply the manual settings.

Record which stage fails before changing several settings at once. If you alter the SSID, security mode, key, and address method simultaneously, you lose the clue that identifies the original problem. Make one verified change, save the profile, and test again.

Fixes by symptom

The PSP cannot see your Wi‑Fi network

  • Confirm that the PSP’s wireless LAN function is enabled using the physical wireless switch or control provided by your model.
  • Make sure the access point is powered on and operating. Test it with another device if one is available, but remember that another device working does not prove PSP compatibility.
  • Move close to the access point and run Scan again.
  • If the SSID is hidden, use manual entry and type the name precisely.
  • Check that you are scanning the intended access point rather than a similarly named network.

Entering a known SSID manually can bypass a hidden-name problem, but it cannot resolve an incompatible security mode or an access point the PSP’s radio cannot use. The cited Sony material does not establish a universal modern-router band rule, so do not assume a particular 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz diagnosis without confirming the exact model and router documentation. If the network remains absent, verify the model’s wireless capability and consult its own manual before changing router settings.

The network appears, but the PSP rejects the connection

  1. Open the saved profile and verify that the SSID is character-for-character correct.
  2. Check the security choice against the router’s current setting. WEP, WPA-PSK (TKIP), and WPA-PSK (AES) are the documented PSP choices.
  3. Re-enter the key carefully, including capitalization and punctuation.
  4. If the router offers only a mode absent from the PSP menu, ask its administrator whether a compatible, separately secured network profile can be enabled.

Do not weaken a household network broadly just to test an old device. If a compatible profile is created, keep it isolated where the router supports that arrangement and apply an appropriate password. A separate network is a configuration option, not a guarantee that every router will support the PSP.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When you do not control the router, give the administrator the exact PSP model and the security options visible on its screen. Asking for “old Wi‑Fi” is less useful than asking whether the access point can expose a profile using one of those documented modes. The administrator can also confirm whether a manual IP, DNS, proxy, or browser value is required.

The PSP connects to the access point but the test fails

Reopen the profile and compare the address method with the network requirements. Leave it on Easy for a normal automatic home setup. Use Custom only with confirmed IP, DNS, proxy, and browser settings. A wrong manual value can prevent Internet access even when the wireless link itself is successful.

Also check whether the access point has Internet service at that moment. The PSP can associate with a router while the modem, provider connection, DNS service, or router’s own configuration is unavailable. Use the router’s status information and its documentation to distinguish those cases. If other devices also cannot reach the Internet, the fault is upstream of the PSP profile.

Rank #3

It connects, but the browser or an online feature does not work

There are three separate checkpoints: the PSP has associated with the access point; it has reached the Internet; and the particular website, game server, or service still operates. A successful Wi‑Fi link proves only the first checkpoint.

Sony’s guide is based on system software 6.60 and warns that services and features may change or be discontinued. It specifically notes that the PlayStation Store no longer sells PSP products. Therefore, do not interpret a service error as proof that your Wi‑Fi profile is wrong, and do not assume that an old game server, store function, or web page remains available. Service changes may also be newer than the printed or stored guide, so check the service operator when the local connection test succeeds but one destination fails.

Understanding Easy versus Custom settings

Setting Use it when Information required
Easy You are joining an ordinary home network that supplies addresses automatically. SSID, security type, and encryption key.
Custom The network administrator or Internet provider requires fixed network values or a proxy. Manual IP address, subnet or gateway values if requested, DNS, proxy, and browser settings supplied by the network authority.

Custom is not a performance mode and does not improve compatibility. It simply exposes fields that Easy normally fills or leaves unused. If you have no written values from the network authority, Easy is the safer choice for a normal home router.

Security compatibility and router choices

The security menu is one of the strongest clues when a PSP sees a network but cannot join it. Sony documents WEP and WPA-PSK with TKIP or AES. WPA2 and WPA3 are not listed in that page’s PSP options. That does not establish a universal statement about every router firmware, but it does establish a practical check: compare the exact mode offered by the router with the exact mode shown by the PSP.

If you control the router, first look for a way to expose a separate network profile using a PSP-listed mode without disrupting newer devices. If the router administrator controls it, provide the PSP model and its available security choices and ask whether a compatible profile is permitted. Keep any legacy-compatible network separated and protected according to the administrator’s security policy. Buying another access point is optional and conditional; its specifications must explicitly confirm the required security settings, and new hardware alone cannot fix a mistyped key, disabled wireless function, or unavailable online service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat a security downgrade as an automatic solution. It may be prohibited by a workplace, school, hotel, or household policy, and it can affect every device sharing that profile. Obtain approval and use the narrowest separate configuration the router permits. If no approved compatible mode exists, the PSP may simply be unable to join that particular network.

Choosing between multiple networks or access points

When several networks are available, evaluate them in this order:

  1. Model support: confirm that the exact PSP variant has wireless LAN and that its manual matches the procedure.
  2. Visibility: prefer an access point whose SSID appears in Scan, or confirm that manual SSID entry is allowed.
  3. Security: verify that the router can use one of the PSP’s documented security choices.
  4. Configuration control: make sure you can obtain the correct key and, if necessary, approved address or proxy values.
  5. Isolation: if a legacy-compatible profile is created, keep it separated and secured where the router permits.
  6. Service availability: confirm that the game, website, or PSP feature you want still operates independently of the local Wi‑Fi connection.

A stronger signal or a shorter distance does not compensate for a security mode the PSP cannot select. Choose the network that meets the compatibility and authorization requirements first, then use proximity and normal access-point troubleshooting to improve the connection.

Model and software caveats

Menu names and available options can vary by PSP model, software version, and region. Sony’s user guide referenced here is for system software 6.60, while the PSP-3004 quick reference and the separate PSP-E1002/E1003 manual cover particular hardware variants. Use the documentation for the model in your hands, especially if a menu item described above is missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Service information can also age faster than the connection instructions. Sony notes that changes may not always be reflected in the guide. Treat the Wi‑Fi setup as a way to establish local network access, not as a promise that every historical PSP service remains online.

A concise recovery checklist

  • Confirm the exact PSP model and enable its wireless LAN function.
  • Confirm that the router or access point is powered and that you know its SSID and key.
  • Use Settings > Network Settings > Infrastructure Mode > New Connection.
  • Run Scan, or enter the SSID manually only when it is hidden or absent from the results.
  • Select WEP, WPA-PSK (TKIP), or WPA-PSK (AES) only when it matches the access point.
  • Re-enter the key exactly, checking capitalization and punctuation.
  • Select Easy unless an administrator or provider has supplied valid Custom values.
  • Save the profile and run Test Connection.
  • If association fails, investigate SSID, security, key, and compatibility.
  • If association succeeds but Internet use fails, investigate address, DNS, proxy, router, and provider status.
  • If Wi‑Fi works but a game or service fails, verify that the remote service still exists.

What a successful setup means

A successful test confirms that this PSP profile can communicate through the selected access point under the current settings. It does not certify every network, router security mode, website, game server, or Sony service. Save the working profile, avoid changing router security without updating the PSP profile, and keep the model-specific manual available if you need to recreate the connection later.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can every PSP connect to Wi‑Fi?

No. Verify the exact model and its documentation first. Sony publishes separate manuals for variants including the PSP-3004 and PSP-E1002/E1003, and wireless capabilities and menu labels can vary.

Can a PSP connect to WPA2 or WPA3 Wi‑Fi?

Sony’s cited PSP security settings list WEP, WPA-PSK (TKIP), and WPA-PSK (AES); WPA2 and WPA3 are not listed there. Compare the exact router mode with the options shown on your PSP, and ask the router administrator whether an approved compatible profile can be provided.

Why does my PSP see the network but reject my password?

Confirm the SSID, select the security mode that exactly matches the access point, and re-enter the key with the correct capitalization and punctuation. If the router uses a mode absent from the PSP menu, the problem may be compatibility rather than the password.

What should I choose: Easy or Custom?

Choose Easy for a normal home network that supplies addresses automatically. Choose Custom only when a network administrator or Internet provider gives you manual IP, DNS, proxy, or browser values.

Why can the PSP connect to Wi‑Fi but not the Internet?

The PSP may have associated with the access point while address, DNS, proxy, modem, provider, or router service is failing. Recheck the saved profile, keep address setup on Easy unless instructed otherwise, and check the router or provider status.

What if my Wi‑Fi network is hidden?

Use the manual SSID-entry option and type the network name exactly. Manual entry solves a hidden-name problem only; it does not overcome an incompatible security mode or unsupported access point.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to buy a travel router to connect a PSP?

No. First check the existing PSP and router settings. An additional access point is optional and useful only if its documented settings include a mode the PSP supports and the network can be isolated and secured appropriately.

Why does an online game or browser still fail after the connection test passes?

A passing test confirms the local profile can communicate through the access point, not that a particular website, game server, store function, or Sony service still operates. Sony notes that services can change or be discontinued and that the PSP Store no longer sells PSP products.

The Bottom Line

Use Infrastructure Mode, match the SSID and one of the PSP’s documented security options, enter the key exactly, select Easy, save, and run Test Connection. If it fails, identify whether the problem is wireless visibility, security compatibility, address setup, Internet service, or a discontinued remote feature before changing settings or buying hardware.
