Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a stock Atari 800XL, the simplest connection is a 5-pin DIN-to-RCA monitor cable: connect its composite-video plug to a TV or monitor’s composite input and, if wanted, connect its mono-audio plug to an audio input. If the display has HDMI but no composite input, add a composite-to-HDMI converter. First check your 800XL’s regional video standard and connector, because NTSC, PAL and SECAM versions are not interchangeable with every display or adapter.
Identify the 800XL’s video connection first
The 800XL’s monitor port carries composite video and mono audio; Atari’s service manual also documents a luminance output. A typical color monitor cable has a male 5-pin DIN plug at the computer end and two RCA/phono plugs at the display end: one for composite video and one for sound. The DIN shape alone does not guarantee the cable is wired for an Atari, so verify compatibility before buying. Atari 800XL Service Manual and Atarimania’s Atari monitor-cable reference describe these connections.

Check the computer’s label, connector and regional version before ordering accessories. NTSC, PAL and SECAM 800XLs exist, and the display or converter must accept the signal standard your computer produces. A technical reference identifies common 5-pin DIN PAL and 6-pin DIN SECAM monitor connectors, while the service manual describes a 5-pin jack for its documented model. If your machine has an unusual connector or is a French-market unit, identify the exact variant first. The 800XL is not an RGB computer by default, so a generic SCART/RGB cable is not a safe assumption. Atari 800XL Service Manual and Atarimania’s technical reference cover the relevant differences.
Choose a connection path that matches your display
| Display input | What to connect | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Composite video | Atari-compatible DIN-to-RCA monitor cable; connect video to the composite input and audio to an audio input if needed. | Display accepts the 800XL’s NTSC, PAL or SECAM standard. |
| HDMI only | DIN-to-RCA cable plus a composite-to-HDMI converter or upscaler. | Converter accepts the Atari’s analog standard. Compatibility varies; no specific model is established here. |
| RF tuner | Use the RF connection only if the computer setup and TV tuner support a compatible analog broadcast standard. | Many modern TVs lack a suitable analog tuner; do not assume RF will work. |
| Monochrome composite | Use the monitor jack’s luminance output with a compatible monochrome input. | This produces a monochrome image, not color composite or color S-Video. |
| S-Video | Requires a suitable chroma modification or video upgrade on a stock 800XL. | A cable alone generally cannot supply color S-Video from the unmodified monitor jack. |
If the screen has composite input
- Plug the compatible monitor cable’s 5-pin DIN end into the 800XL’s monitor port.
- Connect the cable’s composite-video RCA plug—commonly yellow—to the TV or monitor’s composite video input.
- Connect the mono-audio RCA plug to the display’s audio input if available. Otherwise, route it to suitable powered speakers or another audio input.
- Select the matching AV input on the display.
This is the direct, least complicated route when the display accepts the computer’s analog video standard. The service manual describes composite video and audio at the monitor jack; Atarimania documents the typical two-phono-plug cable. Atari 800XL Service Manual and Atarimania’s monitor-cable reference.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If the screen has HDMI but no composite input
- Connect an Atari-compatible DIN-to-RCA cable to the computer.
- Connect the cable’s composite-video and audio plugs to the corresponding inputs on a composite-to-HDMI converter.
- Connect the converter’s HDMI output to the display and select that HDMI input.
The Atari outputs analog video, so HDMI-only displays need conversion. Converter behavior and regional-standard support vary; there is no established best model or guarantee that every inexpensive adapter will accept every Atari signal. The source material does not establish a tested converter. AtariAge discussion of connecting an 800XL to HDMI.
If you are considering the RF connection
RF is a legacy analog route, useful only when the TV has a compatible analog tuner and supports the computer’s broadcast standard. Many contemporary displays do not. Composite is the more straightforward option when the TV provides that input. Atarimania’s Atari connection reference.

If you only need a monochrome picture
The monitor jack’s luminance (“Y”) output can drive a compatible monochrome composite input, producing a black-and-white image. Luminance alone does not carry the color information required for color composite or S-Video. Atari’s service manual identifies luminance as an output on the documented monitor jack. Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why an S-Video cable usually will not give a stock 800XL color
S-Video carries luminance and chrominance separately. The stock 800XL generally does not route chroma to the monitor jack, so buying a cable with an S-Video plug does not create a color signal that is not present there. Atari Projects describes connecting the chroma circuitry to the jack as an internal modification that enables S-Video. This is hardware work, not a cable-only fix. That modification requires work on the computer’s board. The guide also warns that an optional component change can remove composite video. If you want this upgrade, use instructions specific to your board revision or consult a qualified repairer, and account for the possible composite-video trade-off before proceeding. Atari Projects’ modification guide.
What to check if you get no picture or sound
- No picture: Confirm that the display is on the selected AV or HDMI input, the cable is seated, and the video plug is connected to the composite input rather than an audio jack. Check that the display or converter accepts the computer’s regional standard.
- Picture but no sound: The monitor cable’s audio lead is separate from video. Connect it to an audio input or powered speakers; some displays also require a corresponding audio input to be associated with the selected video source.
- Black-and-white picture: Verify the display standard and connection type. A luminance-only connection is monochrome by design, and a stock 800XL’s monitor jack generally does not provide chroma for color S-Video.
- Wrong or unfamiliar connector: Stop before forcing a plug or ordering a standard 5-pin cable. SECAM versions may use a different connector; identify the exact model and jack first.
Manual output specifications
For the model documented in Atari’s service manual, the listed electrical ranges are 750 mV–1 V peak-to-peak for composite video, 1.2–1.5 V peak-to-peak for luminance and 600–750 mV peak-to-peak for audio. These are engineering specifications, not consumer performance measurements; the publication year is not stated in the retrieved manual excerpt. Atari 800XL Service Manual.
