The quickest method depends on both your device and your controller model: use Xbox Wireless on an Xbox console, Bluetooth, the Xbox Wireless Adapter, or USB on Windows, and usually Bluetooth on phones, tablets, Macs, and Apple TV. If pairing fails, connect the controller with a compatible data cable first.

Check your controller before pairing

Not every Xbox controller supports Bluetooth. The Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth is commonly identified as Model 1708. Xbox Series X|S controllers also support Bluetooth. Older Xbox One Wireless Controllers may use Xbox Wireless but lack Bluetooth.

Series controllers have a dedicated Share button. Bluetooth-capable Xbox One models generally have a top shell that blends around the Xbox button, while older models have a more visibly separate upper section. Treat appearance as a clue, not proof. Check the model information or the official Apple compatibility list before assuming Bluetooth will work.

Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 and Xbox Adaptive Controller follow their own feature and compatibility rules. Xbox 360 controllers are different again and do not use the same pairing process described here.

Choose the right connection method

Situation Best first choice Why
Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One Xbox Wireless It is the console’s native wireless connection.
Windows laptop with Bluetooth Bluetooth No additional adapter is needed.
Windows desktop, long sessions, or controller headset use Xbox Wireless Adapter or USB Often provides a steadier connection and more controller functionality than Bluetooth.
iPhone, iPad, Android, or Mac Bluetooth It is convenient and widely supported on compatible devices.
Pairing or firmware problems USB A wired connection provides a reliable baseline for testing and updates.
Older Xbox One controller without Bluetooth USB, or Xbox Wireless Adapter on Windows A generic Bluetooth connection is unavailable.

Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth are not interchangeable. A normal Bluetooth USB adapter does not replace the official Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows. USB also requires a cable that carries data; a charging-only cable will not transfer controller input or firmware.

Prepare the controller

  1. Insert fresh AA batteries or charge the battery pack.
  2. Turn on the device you want to use.
  3. If the controller keeps reconnecting elsewhere, turn Bluetooth off on its previous device temporarily.
  4. Keep the controller close to the target device while pairing.
  5. If repeated failures continue, update the controller firmware through an Xbox console or Windows PC using supported Xbox tools.

Connect an Xbox controller to Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One

Wireless pairing

  1. Turn on the Xbox console.
  2. Press the controller’s Xbox button.
  3. Press and hold the controller’s Pair/Connect button until the Xbox button flashes rapidly.
  4. Press the console’s Pair button. On Xbox Series X|S it is on the front; its position varies across Xbox One models.
  5. Wait until the Xbox button stops flashing and remains lit.

The Xbox button powers on the controller, but the smaller Pair button puts it into discoverable pairing mode.

Wired pairing

  1. Connect the controller to the console with a compatible USB-C or micro-USB data cable, depending on the controller.
  2. Press the Xbox button.
  3. Wait for the console to recognize it.
  4. Test a thumbstick in the dashboard. You can disconnect the cable after wireless pairing has been established.

If the controller will not pair, replace or recharge the batteries, restart the console, move closer to it, and repeat the pairing process. Test the controller over USB to determine whether the problem is wireless, power-related, or hardware-related.

Connect an Xbox controller to a Windows PC

Microsoft supports three main PC methods: Bluetooth, Xbox Wireless, and USB. See Microsoft’s Windows controller guide for current platform guidance.

  • BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.

Method 1: Bluetooth

  1. Press the controller’s Xbox button.
  2. Hold the Pair button until the Xbox button flashes rapidly.
  3. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
  4. Turn Bluetooth on and select Add device > Bluetooth.
  5. Choose Xbox Wireless Controller.

Windows 11 builds may show a different route, such as Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device > Everything else. Labels vary by Windows version and hardware.

Method 2: Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows

  1. Plug the official Xbox Wireless Adapter into a USB port.
  2. Press the adapter’s pairing button.
  3. Turn on the controller and hold its Pair button until the Xbox button flashes.
  4. Wait for the controller and adapter lights to become steady.
  5. Test the controller in Windows or a game.

This requires an Xbox Wireless Adapter. A generic Bluetooth dongle uses a different protocol and cannot provide Xbox Wireless connectivity.

Method 3: USB

  1. Connect the controller to the PC with a compatible USB data cable.
  2. Wait for Windows to recognize or install it.
  3. Open a controller-supported game and test the buttons and sticks.

USB is also a useful route for firmware updates and configuration. Microsoft says the Windows Xbox Accessories app requires a compatible USB-C cable for button mapping on Windows 10 and 11; see the Xbox controller product page.

When Windows recognizes the controller but the game does not

Most modern Windows games using XInput detect an Xbox controller automatically, but game support is separate from operating-system recognition. Enable controller input in the game’s settings, restart the game after connecting the controller, and check Steam Input if you play through Steam. Remapping or virtual-controller software can also intercept input.

Connect an Xbox controller to an iPhone or iPad

Apple lists the Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth, Model 1708, Xbox Series S and Series X controllers, Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, and Xbox Adaptive Controller as supported Xbox controllers. Compatibility still depends on the Apple device, operating-system version, and game.

  1. Press the controller’s Xbox button.
  2. Hold the Pair button until the Xbox button flashes.
  3. Open Settings > Bluetooth on the iPhone or iPad.
  4. Turn Bluetooth on.
  5. Tap Xbox Wireless Controller under available devices.
  6. Open a game that supports controllers.

If it does not appear, confirm that your model supports Bluetooth. Turn the controller off and on, choose Forget This Device if it was previously saved, then pair again. Apple also recommends reducing nearby Bluetooth connections and keeping device software current. See Apple’s wireless-controller troubleshooting guidance.

Connect an Xbox controller to Android

  1. Turn on the controller.
  2. Hold the Pair button until the Xbox button flashes.
  3. Open Settings, then Bluetooth or Connected devices.
  4. Choose Pair new device if necessary.
  5. Select Xbox Wireless Controller and accept the pairing request.
  6. Open a game that supports Bluetooth controllers.

Android menu names differ between manufacturers and versions. Microsoft describes Android compatibility as applying to select devices and operating-system versions. A phone can show the controller as connected while a particular game, remote-play app, or cloud-gaming service does not support controller input.

Connect an Xbox controller to a Mac

Bluetooth

  1. Turn on the controller and hold its Pair button until the Xbox button flashes.
  2. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth.
  3. Select Xbox Wireless Controller.
  4. Open a controller-compatible game and test it.

USB

Connect the controller with a compatible data cable. If macOS does not recognize it, try another cable, USB port, or adapter. A cable that charges the controller may not carry data, and game support remains separate from macOS detection.

Connect an Xbox controller to Apple TV

  1. Turn on the controller and hold the Pair button until the Xbox button flashes.
  2. Open Settings > Remotes and Devices > Bluetooth.
  3. Select the Xbox controller.
  4. Test it in a compatible game or app.

Apple says Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD support up to four Bluetooth game controllers simultaneously, or one controller when Apple TV is also using a Bluetooth audio accessory. See Apple’s controller support page.

Switch the controller between devices

Saved pairings are not the same as simultaneous active connections. Certain Bluetooth-capable Xbox controllers with current firmware can remember one Bluetooth host and one Xbox Wireless host. On supported models, double-pressing the Pair button switches between the saved connection types, according to Xbox’s firmware announcement.

  1. Turn on the controller.
  2. Double-press the Pair button when switching between an Xbox console and a Bluetooth host, if your model and firmware support the feature.
  3. Otherwise, select the controller manually in the target device’s Bluetooth settings.
  4. If it reconnects to the wrong device, turn Bluetooth off on that device or remove the controller from its saved devices.
  5. Update firmware and re-pair both devices if switching remains unreliable.

Fix common Xbox controller connection problems

The controller does not turn on

  • Replace the AA batteries or recharge the battery pack.
  • Hold the Xbox button for several seconds.
  • Try a known-good data cable and another USB port.
  • If it works only over USB, investigate the batteries or battery compartment.

The Xbox button flashes, but nothing finds the controller

  • Hold the Pair button until the Xbox button flashes rapidly; simply turning on the controller is not enough.
  • Move closer to the target device.
  • Toggle Bluetooth off and on.
  • Remove the controller from previously paired hosts.
  • Restart both devices.
  • Confirm that the controller model supports Bluetooth.

It pairs and then disconnects

  • Replace or recharge the batteries.
  • Disconnect the controller from another host.
  • Update its firmware.
  • Forget and re-pair it.
  • Reduce nearby wireless interference.
  • Test over USB to separate a wireless problem from a controller fault.

Windows says “Try connecting your device again”

  1. Remove the controller from Windows Bluetooth devices.
  2. Restart the PC and controller.
  3. Connect by USB or an Xbox Wireless Adapter.
  4. Update firmware through Xbox Accessories.
  5. Pair again over Bluetooth.

Microsoft’s Windows guidance also recommends checking charge, Bluetooth, supported Windows versions, proximity, and firmware.

The controller is connected, but the game does nothing

  • Confirm the game supports controllers.
  • Enable controller input in the game’s settings.
  • Restart the game after connecting the controller.
  • Check Steam Input and the game’s controller configuration.
  • Close remapping or virtual-controller software.
  • Test another game or an operating-system controller tester.
  • On mobile, verify support in the game itself, not just in Android or iOS.

Buttons, headset audio, rumble, or other features are missing

The game may use a different layout or not support the Share button, rumble, trigger effects, or headset audio. Bluetooth can expose fewer features than Xbox Wireless or USB; Microsoft technical documentation has specifically identified limitations around controller headset functionality over Bluetooth on PC. Firmware, Steam Input, and other remapping layers can also change behavior.

USB, Bluetooth, or Xbox Wireless: which should you keep using?

Use Xbox Wireless for an Xbox console. Use Bluetooth when convenience matters and your controller and device support it. On Windows, the Xbox Wireless Adapter is a better fit when you want Xbox Wireless-specific behavior, greater consistency, or controller-headset support. Use USB for the lowest wireless uncertainty, firmware work, and diagnosis, accepting the inconvenience of a cable.

If your controller lacks Bluetooth, do not buy a generic Bluetooth adapter expecting it to solve the problem. On Windows, use an Xbox Wireless Adapter or a compatible data cable. On a phone or tablet, wired USB may require USB-OTG support, the correct adapter, and a data-capable cable, and some games still will not accept controller input.

Remote Play and cloud gaming

Pairing a controller does not itself provide access to Xbox games.

Xbox Remote Play streams games installed on your own Xbox console. You need a compatible Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One console, remote features enabled, a Microsoft account with an Xbox profile, a supported device and controller, and a suitable network connection. Xbox currently lists Android 6.0 or later, iOS 15.1 or later, and Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or later for the cited setup, while requirements and availability can vary by platform and region. Check the current Xbox Remote Play requirements.

Xbox Cloud Gaming streams supported games from Microsoft’s servers rather than from your console. It can require a qualifying Xbox Game Pass subscription and also depends on account, region, browser, device, network, and game support. A controller may be perfectly connected while the cloud service remains unavailable.
