Put the controller into pairing mode, add it from Windows Bluetooth settings, then test it in a game. Windows 11 is the recommended current Windows version; Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, although Microsoft still lists the controller as compatible with Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Before you begin
- Charge the controller or connect it to power.
- Make sure the PC has working Bluetooth hardware. Many laptops do; some desktop PCs do not. A compatible USB Bluetooth adapter can add Bluetooth to a desktop.
- Turn Bluetooth on in Windows and keep the controller close to the PC during pairing.
- If the controller is connected to another Bluetooth device, temporarily turn Bluetooth off on that device.
- Install pending Windows and Bluetooth-driver updates if Bluetooth has previously been unreliable.
Bluetooth is separate from Xbox Wireless. Bluetooth does not require Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless Adapter, while the adapter uses Microsoft’s dedicated Xbox Wireless connection.

Pair the Elite Series 2 in Windows 11
- Press the controller’s Xbox button to turn it on.

- On the PC, open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices.

Pair it in Windows 10
Windows 10 uses a different Settings layout:
- Open Start > Settings > Devices.
- Select Bluetooth & other devices and turn Bluetooth on.
- Select Add Bluetooth or other device.
- Choose Bluetooth.
- Turn on the controller, then hold its top-edge Pair button until the Xbox button flashes.
- Select the controller from the list.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The controller may still connect on Windows 10, but moving to a supported Windows version is the better long-term option.
How to confirm that the controller works
First, check Windows Bluetooth settings. The controller should appear in the paired-device list as connected, although its displayed name can vary by firmware and Windows version.

Use Xbox Accessories for firmware and profiles
The Xbox Accessories app can be used on Windows to update controller firmware and configure supported Elite features, including button mapping and profiles. Install or update it through the Microsoft Store if you need to customize the controller.
Wireless feature support is not necessarily identical across Bluetooth, USB-C, and Xbox Wireless. If Xbox Accessories does not detect the controller over Bluetooth, connect it to the PC with the included USB-C cable. A wired connection is also the preferred fallback for firmware updates and configuration problems.
Microsoft’s product information describes Elite customization on Windows, while some PC features documented by Xbox require USB or an Xbox Wireless Adapter. Do not assume every Xbox Accessories function is available through Bluetooth.
Troubleshooting Bluetooth pairing
The controller does not appear
- Confirm that Bluetooth is enabled in Windows.
- Turn the controller off and on again.
- Hold the Pair button until the Xbox button flashes rapidly; pressing it briefly is not enough.
- Move the controller closer to the PC.
- Remove an old controller entry from Settings > Bluetooth & devices, or from Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices in Windows 10, then try again.
- Temporarily disable Bluetooth on nearby phones, consoles, or other PCs that may be trying to reconnect.
- Restart Bluetooth or restart the PC.
- Run the Bluetooth troubleshooter through Microsoft’s Get Help app.
If Bluetooth is missing entirely, check Device Manager for a Bluetooth adapter. On a desktop with built-in wireless hardware, make sure the manufacturer’s antenna is connected where applicable. Install the PC manufacturer’s Bluetooth driver, or add a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter if the computer has no Bluetooth hardware.

Windows says “Couldn’t connect”
- Remove the existing controller entry from Windows Bluetooth settings.
- Turn the controller off.
- Restart the PC.
- Put the controller back into pairing mode.
- Add it as a new Bluetooth device, avoiding similarly named stale entries.
The controller keeps disconnecting
- Keep it near the PC and charge it fully.
- Update the controller through Xbox Accessories using USB-C.
- Update the PC’s Bluetooth driver through Windows Update, Device Manager, or the computer manufacturer’s support page.
- Remove and re-pair the controller.
- Move wireless transmitters, USB hubs, and other potential sources of interference away from the PC’s Bluetooth antenna.
If disconnections continue, use USB-C or consider an Xbox Wireless Adapter.

It pairs but a game does not detect it
Pairing with Windows does not guarantee that every game will recognize the controller. Possible causes include a game without controller support, a game launched before the controller connected, or Steam Input and another remapping layer changing how input is presented.
- Close and relaunch the game after pairing.
- Test the controller in another controller-compatible game or with
joy.cpl. - Check the game’s controller settings.
- If you use Steam, try Steam Input enabled or disabled, depending on the game.
- Connect with USB-C. If the game works over USB-C, the problem is likely related to Bluetooth, the game’s wireless handling, or its input configuration.
- Update the controller firmware through Xbox Accessories.
Xbox Accessories cannot see the controller
Connect the Elite Series 2 with USB-C, update the Xbox Accessories app through the Microsoft Store, install pending Windows updates, and restart the PC. If you specifically need a wireless configuration feature that Bluetooth does not expose, try Xbox Wireless instead.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Bluetooth, USB-C, or Xbox Wireless?
| Connection | Best for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth | Cable-free play without buying an adapter; especially convenient on laptops. | Reliability depends on the PC’s Bluetooth hardware, drivers, antenna placement, and surrounding wireless conditions. Some Xbox Accessories features may require USB-C or Xbox Wireless. |
| USB-C | The most straightforward fallback, firmware updates, and configuration. | The controller is tethered to the PC, though it can charge while connected. |
| Xbox Wireless Adapter | PC users who lack Bluetooth, have unreliable Bluetooth, or want Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless ecosystem. | It is a separate accessory and uses Xbox Wireless rather than ordinary Bluetooth. |
There is no need to buy an Xbox Wireless Adapter if Bluetooth pairing and game detection work correctly. Use USB-C first for diagnosis and firmware updates; choose the adapter if Bluetooth remains unreliable or does not provide the functions you need. Microsoft does not establish a universal latency ranking between these connection methods, so claims that one is always faster should not be treated as guaranteed.
Connection recovery ladder
For most problems, escalate in this order: re-enter pairing mode → remove and re-pair the device → restart Windows → update Bluetooth drivers → connect over USB-C and update controller firmware → try the Xbox Wireless Adapter. This separates a simple pairing problem from a PC Bluetooth or game-compatibility problem without requiring registry edits or command-line fixes.
