Connect a controller to a Windows PC in one of two ways: plug it in with a compatible USB data cable, or pair it over Bluetooth when both the computer and controller support Bluetooth. Windows will often install a connected controller automatically, but a successful Windows connection does not guarantee that every game will recognize or fully support it. Check the game’s controller-support information before treating a working connection as a game problem.

Choose USB or Bluetooth first

The right setup depends on the controller, the PC’s hardware and the game you want to play. USB is the straightforward wired route: connect the controller with a cable that carries data, and Windows usually detects it. Bluetooth avoids a cable, but the PC must have Bluetooth, the controller must be charged or powered, and both devices must complete pairing.

Connection What you need Typical setup path Important limitation
USB A compatible data-capable USB cable and a free USB port Connect the controller; allow Windows to detect and install it The cable must carry data, not only provide power
Bluetooth A PC with Bluetooth, a powered controller and pairing mode Turn on Bluetooth in Windows, put the controller into pairing mode, then select it from the device list Pairing controls differ by controller model, and game support remains title-specific

A USB Bluetooth adapter is useful only when the computer does not already have Bluetooth. If Bluetooth is built into the PC, an adapter is unnecessary. For either connection, confirm the controller’s connector, operating-system support and the game’s own input requirements.

Check the controller and PC before connecting

A few checks prevent the most common setup mistakes. Identify the controller model and read its connection instructions, because pairing buttons and supported features differ. Confirm whether the controller accepts USB, Bluetooth, or both. A wireless controller still needs power during pairing, while a wired controller needs a cable that carries data as well as power.

  • Identify whether the controller uses USB, Bluetooth, or both.
  • For a wired connection, use a cable that matches the controller’s connector and supports data transfer.
  • For wireless play, verify that the PC has Bluetooth hardware. If it does not, a USB Bluetooth adapter can add it.
  • Charge the controller or install fresh batteries before Bluetooth pairing.
  • Keep the controller close to the PC while pairing and make sure it is discoverable.
  • Check whether the game lists controller support on its store page. Windows recognizing the device is not the same as a game supporting it.

Do not assume that a cable that charges a phone will necessarily work for a controller. The cable must support data transfer, and its plug must fit the controller and computer. The cited support guidance does not validate any particular retail cable or controller model, so verify those details on the product documentation.

Set up a controller over USB

  1. Connect the cable. Plug one end into the controller and the other into the PC. Use a compatible cable that carries data; a power-only cable cannot provide a usable wired controller connection.
  2. Wait for Windows detection. Microsoft Support says, “Windows usually detects and installs new hardware automatically when you connect it.” Give Windows a moment to add the device.
  3. Check the Windows device list. In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices. The controller should appear among connected devices after installation.
  4. Use manual device addition if necessary. If Windows does not add the controller automatically, choose Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices > Add device, then follow the prompts. Microsoft identifies this path as useful when a device is not detected or when adding a wireless device.
  5. Open the game’s input settings. Once Windows sees the controller, launch the game and look for its controller, input or device menu. Some games detect the controller only after their own input setting is enabled.

USB is often the quickest way to determine whether the controller itself works. It does not require Bluetooth hardware in the PC, and it avoids the model-specific wireless pairing sequence. It also gives you a useful comparison point: if the controller works over USB but not Bluetooth, investigate Bluetooth hardware, pairing mode, range or interference rather than immediately changing game bindings.

Sony lists USB use for the DualSense controller on Windows 10 (64-bit) and Windows 11. The same basic USB procedure applies: use a compatible data cable, let Windows detect the device, and then confirm that the particular game supports the controller.

Pair a controller over Bluetooth

  1. Turn on Bluetooth in Windows. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices and switch Bluetooth on. You can also use Windows Quick Settings when available.
  2. Put the controller into pairing mode. The button combination is model-specific. Follow the controller manufacturer’s instructions rather than assuming that one controller’s sequence works on another.
  3. Select the controller. In Windows’ Bluetooth device list, choose the controller when it appears and complete the pairing prompt.
  4. Wait for the connection to finish. Microsoft says a paired device can connect automatically again when Bluetooth is enabled and the device is in range.
  5. Test it in the game. A paired device can still be unsupported by a particular title, so verify the game’s controller settings and store-page support label.

Pairing and connecting are related but distinct steps. The first pairing records the controller in Windows; a later session can reconnect when Bluetooth is on and the controller is within range. If the controller was paired with another device, it may need to be placed back into pairing mode before the PC can find it. Keep the controller near the computer during the initial search and make sure its indicator shows the expected pairing state.

If the PC does not have Bluetooth hardware, connect a USB Bluetooth adapter and then repeat the Windows Bluetooth steps. Do not buy or plug in an adapter simply because a controller is wireless; it is relevant only when the computer lacks built-in Bluetooth.

Pair a Sony DualSense specifically

Sony documents both USB and Bluetooth connections for DualSense on Windows 10 (64-bit) and Windows 11. For Bluetooth pairing:

  1. Make sure the player indicator on the controller is off.
  2. Disconnect any USB cable from the DualSense.
  3. Hold the Create button, then hold the PS button until the light bar begins blinking.
  4. On the PC, enable Bluetooth in Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
  5. Select the controller from the available Bluetooth devices.

If the DualSense does not appear, repeat the sequence from the beginning: turn the controller off, unplug USB, and hold the required buttons until the light bar blinks. Selecting a controller that is already listed but not actively connected is different from putting it into pairing mode, so use the blinking light as the indication that Windows should search for it.

Some DualSense functions depend on the device and the game. Sony notes that haptic feedback on PC may require a USB connection, so Bluetooth pairing alone does not promise access to every feature. Treat the game’s own support information as the final check for advanced functions. A controller can therefore be connected correctly while a particular title exposes only basic buttons or requires USB for a feature.

Confirm that Windows sees the controller

Before changing game settings, separate the Windows connection question from the game-support question. If the controller appears in Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices, Windows has detected it. If it does not appear, work through the connection checklist in the next section instead of changing in-game bindings.

For USB, a missing device points first to the cable, connector, USB port or Windows detection process. For Bluetooth, check hardware availability, the Bluetooth switch, power, pairing mode and range. This order keeps you from spending time remapping controls in a game that has not received any usable input device.

A visible controller still may not operate every game. Steam explains that not all games support controllers. Its Big Picture support information identifies official Microsoft Xbox controllers, official Sony DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers, and official Nintendo Switch Pro controllers. Third-party controllers often work, but Steam does not officially support every third-party model.

Check whether the game supports your controller

Controller support is a property of the individual game, not just of Windows or the controller. Open the game’s Steam store page and look for the Controller Support field before assuming that a failed game input means the controller is defective.

Full Controller Support

Steam’s Full Controller Support label means the game can be downloaded, launched and played using only a controller. You should not need a mouse or keyboard for those basic stages. This label is useful when a player wants to operate the complete path from the store or library launch through gameplay without changing input devices.

Partial Controller Support

Partial Controller Support means the controller works for some or most play, but a mouse or keyboard may still be required for setup or parts of the interface. A game can therefore recognize the controller while still requiring another input device for a launcher, menu or configuration screen. Partial support is not the same as a faulty connection.

When no support label solves the question

Support can vary by game even when the same controller works elsewhere. Sony directs players to the Steam store page’s Controller Support field for this reason. Check the title’s listing and in-game input options before troubleshooting the PC connection further. A game may also distinguish between basic button input and advanced features such as DualSense haptics, so verify the title’s own notes when a particular function is missing.

Troubleshoot a controller the PC cannot find

Bluetooth is missing or unavailable

  • Confirm that the PC actually has Bluetooth hardware.
  • Turn Bluetooth on in Settings > Bluetooth & devices or Quick Settings.
  • If the PC has no Bluetooth, add it with a USB Bluetooth adapter.
  • Do not use an adapter as a duplicate when Bluetooth is already built into the computer.

The adapter is a hardware solution, not a replacement for pairing. After adding one to a PC without Bluetooth, turn Bluetooth on in Windows, place the controller in its model-specific pairing mode and select it from the device list.

The controller does not appear in the Bluetooth list

  • Turn the controller on and confirm that it has charge or fresh batteries.
  • Put it into the correct model-specific pairing mode.
  • Keep it within range of the PC while pairing.
  • Check Windows’ Bluetooth discovery setting if the controller is still missing from the device list. Microsoft lists discovery settings as a check when a Bluetooth device cannot be found.

Do not rely only on a light or power indicator to prove that pairing mode is active. Use the manufacturer’s button sequence and confirm that the controller appears as a selectable Bluetooth device. If a previous connection is still active, disconnect the USB cable where the model requires it and repeat the pairing sequence.

The connection is slow or unresponsive

Microsoft notes that unshielded USB devices connected to USB 3.0 ports can sometimes interfere with Bluetooth. If Bluetooth pairing succeeds but input is sluggish or intermittently unresponsive, inspect nearby USB 3.0 connections and test again with possible sources of interference removed or repositioned. This is a Bluetooth troubleshooting step; it does not indicate that every USB 3.0 port or device will cause a problem.

USB connection does not install

  • Disconnect and reconnect the controller firmly at both ends.
  • Confirm that the cable matches the controller’s connector and carries data.
  • Use Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices > Add device in Windows 11 if automatic detection does not occur.
  • Try the controller’s supported connection route, such as Bluetooth, only after confirming that the PC has the required hardware.
  • If Windows still does not list it, the problem is at the cable, port, controller or Windows-device-detection stage rather than in the game.

A cable that supplies power but no data can make the controller light up while leaving Windows unable to add it. That symptom is why checking data capability belongs before changing game settings or buying a Bluetooth adapter.

Windows sees the controller but the game does not

Check the game’s controller support and input settings. Steam and Sony both warn that support varies by title. A controller that is fully usable in one game may be unsupported, partially supported or dependent on a different connection method in another. Look for the game’s controller or device selector, then compare its store-page support label with the behavior you observe.

Choose the better connection for your situation

Situation Prefer Reason
You want the simplest initial setup USB Windows often detects and installs connected hardware automatically.
Your PC already has Bluetooth and you want to play without a cable Bluetooth Pair once, then the controller can reconnect automatically when Bluetooth is on and the device is in range.
Your PC lacks Bluetooth USB, or Bluetooth with an added USB adapter USB works without Bluetooth hardware; wireless use requires an adapter in this case.
You need DualSense features that may require USB USB Sony says some features, including PC haptic feedback in supported cases, may require a USB connection.
The game has uncertain controller support Check the game first, then test USB The game’s support label and input settings determine whether the controller can be used, regardless of how Windows connects it.

There is no universal choice that works identically in every title. Compare the PC’s existing Bluetooth hardware, the convenience of a cable-free connection, the controller’s operating-system and feature support, and the specific game’s controller-support information. USB is a practical diagnostic route because it removes Bluetooth pairing from the equation; Bluetooth is convenient when the computer already includes the required hardware and the game supports the controller.

A simple decision path

  1. Does the PC have Bluetooth? If not, use USB or add a USB Bluetooth adapter. If yes, either route is available when the controller supports it.
  2. Do you have a known data-capable cable? If yes, USB is the shortest first test. If not, use the controller’s documented Bluetooth procedure or obtain a compatible data cable.
  3. Does Windows list the controller? If no, stay with cable, power, pairing, range and discovery troubleshooting. If yes, move to the game.
  4. Does the game show controller support? Check the Steam store label and the game’s input menu. Full support, partial support and no listed support imply different expectations.
  5. Are advanced features missing? Check the controller manufacturer’s notes and the game’s support information. For DualSense, some PC haptic feedback cases may require USB.

This sequence prevents two common errors: buying an adapter for a PC that already has Bluetooth, and treating a game-compatibility limitation as a Windows hardware failure.

What to remember when setup is complete

  • USB is the simplest wired route, provided the cable supports data.
  • Bluetooth requires Bluetooth-capable PC hardware, Bluetooth enabled in Windows, and the controller in its correct pairing mode.
  • DualSense supports USB and Bluetooth on Windows 10 (64-bit) and Windows 11, but feature availability depends on the device, connection and game.
  • A Bluetooth adapter is needed only for a PC without built-in Bluetooth.
  • Windows detection does not prove game compatibility; consult the game’s Steam Controller Support field and its input settings.
  • Full Controller Support means a title can be used from download through play with only a controller, while Partial Controller Support may still require a mouse or keyboard for some tasks.
  • If Bluetooth input is unreliable, check power, range, discovery mode and nearby unshielded USB devices connected to USB 3.0 ports.
  • If a wired controller powers on but Windows does not list it, verify that the USB cable carries data before changing software settings.

Why does my controller work in Windows but not in a game?

Windows detection does not guarantee title support. Check the game’s Steam support label and its controller or input settings. Support can vary by game, and third-party controllers are not officially supported in every title.

Can Bluetooth interfere with USB devices?

Microsoft notes that unshielded USB devices connected to USB 3.0 ports can sometimes interfere with Bluetooth. If pairing succeeds but input is sluggish or unresponsive, inspect nearby USB 3.0 devices and test again after removing or repositioning possible sources of interference.

Will every DualSense feature work over Bluetooth on PC?

No. Sony says feature availability depends on the device and game, and haptic feedback on PC may require USB. Check the specific game and use USB when an advanced feature requires it.

The Bottom Line

Start with USB when you want the simplest diagnostic path, using a compatible data cable. Choose Bluetooth when the PC has Bluetooth and the controller is correctly paired. In either case, confirm that Windows lists the device, then check the game’s own Controller Support label and input settings. Connection and game compatibility are separate steps.
