How to connect Bluetooth headphones to a PS5, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch depends on the console: Nintendo Switch supports built-in Bluetooth audio pairing; Sony says ordinary third-party Bluetooth headsets do not connect directly to PS5; and the current Xbox-specific route is not established by the official support material available here. Use the platform-specific guidance below rather than assuming the same pairing steps work everywhere.

How to connect Bluetooth headphones to Nintendo Switch
- Update the console software, then put the headphones or earbuds into pairing or discoverable mode.
- From the HOME menu, open System Settings, scroll to Bluetooth Audio, then choose the option to pair or add a device.
- Select the headphones’ name when it appears. To reconnect a saved device later, turn it on and select it in Bluetooth Audio if it does not reconnect automatically.
- If a saved device will not reconnect, Nintendo recommends updating and restarting the console. If that does not help, remove the saved device and pair it again.
Nintendo’s technical compatibility information specifies the A2DP profile and SBC codec, but it does not guarantee that every individual headphone model will work. Check a device’s supported profiles before buying it for Switch use.
Switch limitations to know before pairing
- Only one Bluetooth audio device can be connected at a time, though the console can save up to 10 devices.
- Bluetooth microphone input is not supported, so this route does not provide headset mic input for voice chat.
- No more than two wireless controllers can be connected while Bluetooth audio is active.
- Bluetooth audio disconnects during local communication.
- Audio latency may vary by Bluetooth device; Nintendo does not guarantee operation of specific models.
How to use headphones with a PS5
Do not try to pair ordinary third-party Bluetooth headphones through a PS5 Bluetooth accessories menu: Sony says third-party wireless headsets using Bluetooth are not supported directly. For wireless audio, use a headset specifically compatible with PS5, such as a supported USB wireless headset or a PlayStation Link headset with its USB adapter.
A standard wired headset with a 3.5 mm plug can connect to the DualSense controller. PlayStation’s PS5 FAQ says, “Headsets that can connect to a 3.5mm jack, USB-A, or USB-C will work for 3D Audio.” That statement concerns 3D Audio compatibility; it does not establish that every headset function works with every headset or connection.

How to connect Bluetooth headphones to Xbox
The official Xbox headset support page available for this guidance did not provide accessible Xbox-specific instructions, so a direct Bluetooth pairing path, exact menu labels, and support for particular transmitters cannot be established here. Do not assume that Bluetooth headphones pair directly, or that a generic USB Bluetooth transmitter will work. Check current Xbox documentation for your exact console and headset before choosing a connection method.
Why the connection differs by console
“Bluetooth headphones” describes the headphones’ wireless technology, not a universal console connection. Switch documents built-in Bluetooth audio pairing, Sony identifies compatible USB and PlayStation Link routes for PS5 wireless headsets, and the Xbox route needs confirmation against accessible current Xbox guidance. The headphones, console, and connection method must all support the function you want—especially microphone input, which Switch Bluetooth audio does not provide.
