Ollama is the local model server. It downloads model files, keeps the selected model available on your computer, and exposes an HTTP API. n8n is the workflow layer: it receives a trigger, prepares data, sends a prompt to Ollama, and routes the generated response to later nodes such as a database, notification, file, or game-content pipeline.
The important distinction is network location. localhost always means “this process’s own machine or container.” If n8n and Ollama are separate containers, or one is in a container and the other is on the host, the URL that works in a browser on your desktop may not work from n8n. Treat the Base URL as a routing decision, not merely a form field.

Connection choices at a glance
| Topology | Base URL n8n normally uses | Extra requirement | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| n8n and Ollama on the same host, both outside containers | http://localhost:11434 |
Ollama must be running and the model must be pulled | Fastest first setup |
| n8n in Docker, Ollama on the host | http://host.docker.internal:11434 |
Linux usually needs a host-gateway mapping; Ollama may need to listen beyond loopback | Keep Ollama on the host while containerizing n8n |
| n8n and Ollama in separate Compose services | A service URL such as http://ollama:11434 |
Both services must share a Docker network and the service name must resolve | Self-contained development or server deployment |
| n8n Cloud reaching a private Ollama server | A public HTTPS endpoint for your Ollama gateway | Internet exposure, authentication, TLS, firewall rules, and an address reachable from the cloud | Only when local n8n is not an option |
The Docker and cloud rows depend on your operating system, container runtime, reverse proxy, and Ollama version. Confirm behavior against the current n8n and Ollama documentation before treating a deployment pattern as universal.
Prerequisites and a safe order of operations
Have these items ready before opening n8n:
- A working Ollama installation on the machine or server that will host the model.
- At least one pulled model, with its complete tag recorded exactly as Ollama reports it.
- n8n running either on the same host, in Docker, in Compose, or as a cloud service.
- Permission to change the Ollama listening address or container networking if the two services are separated.
- A way to test HTTP connectivity from the n8n runtime, not only from your desktop shell.
Do not begin by debugging an n8n node. First prove that Ollama can answer a request on its own. This separates model, API, and network problems from credential or workflow problems.
Recommended Free Tools
1. Install Ollama, pull a model, and test it directly
Start Ollama and download a model
Install Ollama for your operating system, start its server, and pull a model. The following uses llama3.1 as an example; use the tag you actually intend to run:
ollama pull llama3.1
Model names are tags, not descriptive labels. A variant such as llama3.1:8b, a quantized tag, or a differently named release is a different value for n8n’s model field. Copy the exact output of your Ollama installation rather than shortening it.
Check that the model answers before involving n8n
A command-line chat confirms that the model is available:
ollama run llama3.1
For an API-level check, send a non-streaming request to Ollama’s generation endpoint:
curl http://localhost:11434/api/generate
-d '{"model":"llama3.1","prompt":"Reply with OK","stream":false}'
A successful response contains generated text and completes as one JSON response. If this fails, fix Ollama, the model tag, or the local listener first. n8n cannot repair a server that is not answering independently.

2. Create the Ollama credential in n8n
Use the default URL for a same-machine setup
- Open n8n’s credentials area and create a credential whose type is Ollama.
- Enter
http://localhost:11434in the Base URL field when n8n can reach Ollama on the same machine. - If you configured the
OLLAMA_HOSTenvironment variable, enter that value instead of assuming the default. - Save the credential and run its connection test.
A successful test is reported as Connection tested successfully. The exact position of the credential menu or wording around it can vary between n8n releases, but the required information is the Ollama Base URL.
Try the loopback address explicitly when localhost fails
Some local environments resolve localhost in a way that does not match the listener’s address family or binding. If the test fails on a same-host installation, change only the host portion to 127.0.0.1 and test again:
http://127.0.0.1:11434
This is a diagnostic substitution for a local process. It does not solve a container-to-host routing problem; in that case, use the Docker options below.
3. Add the native Ollama Chat Model node
The native Ollama Chat Model node is the usual starting point for a new workflow because it uses the Ollama credential directly and exposes the model as an n8n chat-model component. Add it to the AI-capable chain or agent you want to run, select the Ollama credential, and enter the pulled model tag exactly.
Match the model tag character for character
If you pulled llama3.1, use llama3.1 in the node. Do not substitute a marketing name, omit a variant suffix, or rely on an automatically selected model. A model-not-found error after a successful credential test usually means the server is reachable but the node requested a tag that is not installed.
Build a minimal verification workflow
- Create a manual trigger so you can run the workflow without introducing another system’s failure.
- Add the Ollama Chat Model node and attach the Ollama credential.
- Set the model to the exact tag tested from the command line.
- Give the connected chain or agent a short prompt such as “Reply with the word OK.”
- Execute the workflow and inspect the node output before adding business logic.
Once this returns text, replace the fixed prompt with data from your trigger. Keep the first production test small: a short input makes timeout, routing, and parsing errors easier to identify than a large document.
Docker: connect a containerized n8n to host Ollama
When n8n runs inside a container, localhost points to the n8n container itself. Ollama running on the physical host is therefore not at http://localhost:11434 from n8n’s perspective.

Use the host gateway name
The common Base URL is:
http://host.docker.internal:11434
Docker Desktop commonly provides this hostname. On Linux, it is not automatically defined in many Docker setups. Add a host-gateway mapping when starting the container:
docker run --add-host=host.docker.internal:host-gateway ...
In Docker Compose, express the equivalent under the n8n service:
extra_hosts:
- "host.docker.internal:host-gateway"
Keep the mapping on the n8n service, recreate the container, then put the host-gateway URL in the Ollama credential. Test from the recreated runtime; testing only on the host does not prove that the container can resolve or reach the address.
Make Ollama reachable beyond loopback only when necessary
Ollama may be bound only to the host’s loopback interface. A container reaching the host gateway can then receive a connection refusal even though a host-side curl succeeds. One commonly suggested configuration is setting OLLAMA_HOST=0.0.0.0 so Ollama listens on the host’s interfaces.
Binding to all interfaces changes the security boundary. Do this only on a protected network, restrict access with firewall rules, and avoid exposing the Ollama port directly to the public internet. The exact environment-variable behavior can differ by Ollama version and service manager, so verify the resulting listener with your operating system’s network tools and the current Ollama documentation.
Docker Compose: put both services on one network
An alternative is to run Ollama and n8n as Compose services on the same user-defined network. In that arrangement, the n8n credential can use the Ollama service name, for example:
http://ollama:11434
The name must match the Compose service key, and both services must be attached to the same network. This avoids host-gateway routing, but it introduces container lifecycle concerns: Ollama must be healthy before a workflow runs, model files need persistent storage, and the model must be pulled inside the Ollama environment rather than only on your host.

Verify service-name routing
- Start the Compose project and confirm that the Ollama service is running.
- Ensure the model was pulled in the Ollama container.
- From the n8n container, test name resolution and an HTTP request to
http://ollama:11434. - Use the same service URL in the n8n Ollama credential.
- Run the minimal workflow before adding queues, webhooks, or external integrations.
If the service name does not resolve, inspect the Compose network and service names before changing model settings. A DNS or network failure occurs before Ollama can inspect the request.

There are three practical ways to call Ollama from n8n. The native node is the recommended path for a new build, while the other two are useful when an existing workflow already expects a different interface.
| Method | Endpoint or node | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native Ollama Chat Model | Ollama credential plus Ollama Chat Model node | Smallest configuration surface; fits n8n’s chat-model connections | Requires the node and credential labels available in your n8n version |
| OpenAI-compatible chat model | Ollama’s /v1 compatible endpoint |
Reuses workflows built around an OpenAI-compatible chat-model interface | Endpoint, model field, and compatibility details must be configured consistently |
| HTTP Request | POST to Ollama’s /api/generate |
Full control over JSON, headers, options, and response handling | You must parse the response and manage streaming, errors, and prompts yourself |
When the OpenAI-compatible endpoint is useful
Pointing an OpenAI-compatible chat-model node at Ollama’s /v1 endpoint can minimize changes in a workflow that already uses that node family. Keep the same network rules described earlier: the endpoint host must be reachable from n8n, and the model value still has to match an installed Ollama tag. Compatibility does not remove Ollama’s model-management requirement.
When to use an HTTP Request node
Use a raw HTTP Request when you need fields that the native node does not expose, want to store the complete API response, or are integrating a custom prompt-and-response contract. Send a POST request to:
http://<reachable-ollama-host>:11434/api/generate
A minimal JSON body is:
{
"model": "llama3.1",
"prompt": "Summarize this input in three bullet points.",
"stream": false
}
One n8n-oriented tutorial recommends stream:false because token-by-token streaming is harder to parse in ordinary nodes. Non-streaming responses are easier to pass to later nodes as one JSON item. Add the input text through n8n’s expression mechanism, then inspect the response shape before mapping a field downstream; response handling can change when you alter the Ollama endpoint or request mode.
Use local models in practical workflows
Local inference is most useful when the workflow’s data should remain on infrastructure you control, when an internet dependency is undesirable, or when you need repeatable automation around an installed model. Examples include:
- Classifying incoming bug reports by platform, severity, or reproduction status before writing them to a tracker.
- Turning long playtest notes into a structured list of issues, suggested owners, and follow-up questions.
- Extracting item names, dialogue cues, or quest metadata from internal design documents into JSON for review.
- Drafting release-note candidates from a set of completed changes, with a human approval step before publication.
- Routing support messages to the correct team while retaining the original text for audit.
For each workflow, define the output contract before choosing the model. If downstream nodes expect JSON, instruct the model clearly, validate the returned structure, and send malformed output to a review branch instead of silently writing it to production data. Local execution does not make generated text authoritative; it only changes where inference runs.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Separate deterministic steps from model steps
Keep webhooks, authentication, deduplication, schema validation, and database writes deterministic. Put the Ollama call between those steps and give it only the fields it needs. This makes retries safer and shows whether a failure came from n8n logic or model generation.
Control latency and payload size
Large prompts increase processing time and memory pressure. Trim irrelevant fields before sending them, cap batch sizes, and handle timeouts explicitly. A manual test that works for one short prompt does not establish that a large batch will complete within your workflow’s execution limits.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |

Connection refused on localhost |
Ollama is stopped, bound elsewhere, or n8n is in a container | Run the direct Ollama test; then use 127.0.0.1 for same-host n8n or the container-specific hostname for Docker |
| Credential test fails only in Docker | The container cannot route to the host | Use host.docker.internal, add the Linux host-gateway mapping, and verify that Ollama accepts connections from the container |
| Host curl works, container request is refused | Ollama listens only on loopback | Review the OLLAMA_HOST setting, firewall rules, and the actual listening address; do not expose the port broadly without protection |
| Model not found | The node’s model value differs from the pulled tag | Copy the exact tag used by ollama pull into the Ollama Chat Model or HTTP body |
| Workflow hangs or returns partial text | Streaming is being handled as if it were one response | Set stream to false for a simple HTTP Request flow, or implement explicit streaming parsing |
| Compose URL does not resolve | Wrong service name or separate networks | Compare the credential hostname with the Compose service key and confirm both services share a network |
| n8n Cloud cannot connect | The Ollama server is private or lacks a secure public route | Use a reachable HTTPS endpoint with authentication and carefully restricted access; a local-only listener cannot be reached from the cloud |
Use the failure order that saves time
- Confirm the Ollama process is running.
- Confirm the model responds to a direct request on the intended host and port.
- Confirm the n8n runtime can resolve and reach that host and port.
- Test the n8n credential.
- Run a one-prompt workflow with the exact model tag.
- Only then debug expressions, agents, branching, or downstream parsing.
This order prevents a prompt-formatting issue from being mistaken for a networking issue, and prevents a network issue from being “fixed” by changing a model name.
Security and operational considerations
Keep the API private by default
A local Ollama listener is often unauthenticated inside its trusted machine or network. Do not publish port 11434 directly to the internet. If a remote n8n instance must use it, put an authenticated HTTPS reverse proxy or equivalent access control in front, restrict source addresses where possible, and rotate credentials according to your organization’s policy.
Protect prompts and generated data
Local processing can reduce third-party data transfer, but n8n execution logs, database nodes, backups, and container volumes may still contain prompts and responses. Apply the same retention and access controls to those systems that you apply to other internal data.
Persist models in containers
When Ollama runs in Compose or another container environment, mount persistent storage for model files. Otherwise, recreating the container can remove the downloaded model and turn a previously healthy workflow into a model-not-found failure.

Account for version drift
Node names, credential labels, Docker flags, and environment-variable behavior can change. The procedures here reflect the documented setup guidance available in October 2026; check the current n8n and Ollama documentation when upgrading either product, especially before changing a production listener or cloud route.
Quick Recap
A repeatable checklist
- Ollama starts without errors on the intended host.
- The exact model tag is pulled and answers a direct request.
- The Base URL describes how n8n reaches Ollama, not how your desktop reaches it.
- Docker deployments include host-gateway or shared-network configuration where required.
- The Ollama credential test succeeds in n8n.
- The Chat Model node uses the exact pulled tag.
- HTTP Request workflows disable streaming unless they explicitly parse streamed output.
- Remote access uses authentication, HTTPS, and restricted network exposure.
- A one-prompt manual workflow succeeds before automation and downstream writes are enabled.
