Yes—original Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons can connect to Windows 11 over Bluetooth. The important catch is that pairing is only the first step: Windows may show the left and right Joy-Cons as separate devices, and many PC games expect an Xbox-style XInput controller. You may need Steam Input, BetterJoy, or the game’s own remapping tools before everything works correctly.
This guide covers pairing one or both Joy-Cons, testing them, configuring Steam and non-Steam games, and fixing the most common connection and mapping problems. These instructions concern original Switch Joy-Cons; do not assume they also apply to Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con 2 controllers.

What you need
- A Windows 11 PC with working Bluetooth.
- Charged original Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons.
- The Joy-Cons separated from the Switch or charging grip.
- Steam, if you intend to play Steam games.
- BetterJoy only if Windows, Steam, or the target game does not handle the controllers properly.
If your desktop PC has no built-in Bluetooth, Microsoft recommends adding it with a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter. The adapter provides the wireless connection; it does not automatically combine Joy-Cons or convert them into XInput controllers. See Microsoft’s Bluetooth pairing guidance.

How to pair a Joy-Con with Windows 11
- Charge the Joy-Con and move it close to the PC.
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Turn Bluetooth on.
- Select Add device, then choose Bluetooth.
- On the Joy-Con, press and hold the small Sync button on the inner rail—the narrow side with the SL and SR buttons—for about five seconds.
- Release the button when the four player LEDs begin cycling.
- Select the Joy-Con when it appears in Windows. It may be listed as Joy-Con (L), Joy-Con (R), or under a slightly different name.
Repeat the process for the other controller. You must place each Joy-Con into pairing mode separately. The exact Windows labels can vary between Windows 11 builds and previously stored Bluetooth pairings. The standard Microsoft path remains Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device > Bluetooth.
#1 Best Overall
- Two Joy Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as 1 game controller when attached to the Joy Con grip
- They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two player action in supported games
- Each Joy Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible
Can you connect both Joy-Cons at once?
Usually, yes. Windows generally pairs the left and right Joy-Cons as two separate Bluetooth devices. That does not mean Windows has merged them into one conventional gamepad.
A single Joy-Con may work as a small sideways controller if the game or software supports its buttons and orientation. With two Joy-Cons, you will commonly need Steam Input, BetterJoy, an emulator’s controller configuration, or another remapping layer to make them behave like one pad. Pairing both controllers and combining both controllers are separate steps.
How to check that Windows detected the Joy-Con
- Return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices and confirm that the Joy-Con appears.
- Use Windows’ available controller-testing interface, Steam’s controller tools, or the target game’s input settings.
- Press buttons and move the stick before launching the game.
A Joy-Con listed under Bluetooth devices is paired, but that does not guarantee that a game can use it. The four stages are different: Bluetooth pairing, Windows detection, game recognition, and correct button mapping. Microsoft also recommends testing a controller before starting a game. Microsoft’s controller guidance provides general testing advice.

Steam is worth trying before installing third-party software:
- Pair the Joy-Con or Joy-Cons in Windows first.
- Open Steam’s controller settings and check whether Steam detects the device.
- For the individual game, enable or configure Steam Input if the option is available.
- Launch the game through Steam and test the controls.
- Check the game’s button prompts: Nintendo and Xbox layouts place familiar buttons differently.
Do not treat Steam’s general controller support as a promise of native Joy-Con support in every game. Valve’s official Big Picture documentation lists Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers among its supported categories, but that does not establish identical native support for Joy-Cons. Controller support also varies by game, launcher, overlay, and input configuration. Check Steam’s current controller support information.
If a Steam game does not respond, try launching it from Steam rather than its executable, enable Steam Input for that game, and close other remapping utilities before testing again.
When to use BetterJoy
Install BetterJoy only when you need an additional translation layer. It is particularly useful when:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- The Joy-Con pairs with Windows but the game cannot detect it.
- The game accepts only XInput or Xbox-style controllers.
- You want two Joy-Cons to act as a combined controller.
- You need broader support in non-Steam games or emulators.
- You are testing supported rumble or motion features in compatible software.
BetterJoy can expose Joy-Con input as generic XInput, but it is third-party software and its setup options can change between releases. Download it from the project’s official GitHub repository, not an unrelated download site.
Basic BetterJoy workflow
- Pair the Joy-Cons in Windows Bluetooth settings.
- Download the current release from the official BetterJoy GitHub repository.
- Install or approve any supporting components requested by that release.
- Start BetterJoy and confirm that the controllers appear.
- Choose the available individual or combined-controller behavior that suits the game.
- Start the game only after the translated controller is visible.
Avoid running BetterJoy alongside Steam Input, DS4Windows, reWASD, an emulator remapper, or another virtual-controller tool unless you understand which program should produce the final input. Multiple translation layers can create duplicate buttons, wrong mappings, or double input.
Using Joy-Cons with non-Steam games and emulators
For a non-Steam game, first try the game’s own controller and remapping settings. If it expects XInput, BetterJoy is usually the more relevant option than simple Windows pairing. You can also add a non-Steam game to Steam and test Steam Input, although results depend on the game and its launcher.
For emulators, configure the emulator directly when it recognizes the Joy-Con. Otherwise, use BetterJoy or the emulator’s supported input translation method. Motion controls, rumble, battery reporting, and other Switch-specific features are not guaranteed merely because Bluetooth pairing succeeded.
Troubleshooting
The Joy-Con does not appear in Bluetooth
- Confirm Bluetooth is switched on in Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Charge the Joy-Con.
- Hold its Sync button again until the player LEDs cycle.
- Move it close to the PC.
- Temporarily disable Bluetooth on the Switch, phone, or another nearby device that may reconnect to it.
- Remove an old or duplicate Joy-Con entry and pair again.
- Restart Bluetooth or restart Windows.
- Test the PC’s Bluetooth with another device.
- Update or reinstall the Bluetooth adapter driver.
- Run Bluetooth troubleshooting through the Windows Get Help app.
Microsoft identifies low battery, range, disabled hardware, drivers, and device-level pairing problems as common causes. See Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guide and its Bluetooth connection troubleshooting steps.

It pairs but does nothing in a game
Pairing establishes the wireless connection, not universal game compatibility. Try Steam Input, the game’s remapping menu, or BetterJoy for XInput output. Close competing controller utilities and relaunch the game after the chosen input layer is running.
Only one Joy-Con works
Check that the second Joy-Con was paired separately. The game may support only one controller, or Windows, Steam, or BetterJoy may be exposing two separate devices instead of one combined pad. Also check whether another utility has captured one controller.
The buttons are wrong or duplicated
Nintendo and Xbox button labels differ, and two programs may be translating the same input. Close the game, disable all but one input layer, relaunch it, select a standard gamepad or XInput layout, and remap buttons in only one place.
The Joy-Cons keep disconnecting
Check battery level, distance, radio interference, Bluetooth drivers, and nearby USB 3 devices or hubs. A USB Bluetooth adapter placed directly beside noisy USB hardware may perform poorly. Multiple Joy-Cons can also place greater demands on the adapter; BetterJoy’s FAQ discusses multiple-controller Bluetooth issues.
Rumble or motion controls do not work
Basic Bluetooth pairing does not provide automatic support for gyro, rumble, NFC, or every other Joy-Con feature. Support depends on the game or emulator, drivers, translation software, and configuration. BetterJoy documents additional Joy-Con features, but results vary by application.
Steam detects the controller but the game does not
Enable Steam Input for that game, launch it through Steam, verify that the game supports controllers, and close external remappers. External launchers, overlays, incompatible input styles, and multiple devices can all affect controller behavior. Steam’s controller-configuration troubleshooting covers these conflicts.

Which setup should you choose?
| Goal | Best first choice | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Just connect a Joy-Con | Windows Bluetooth | Fast and free, but the controller may appear as a separate device. |
| Play a Steam game | Steam Input | Convenient per-game remapping, with support varying by title. |
| Use an XInput-only game | BetterJoy | Translates Joy-Con input into a generic XInput controller. |
| Use two Joy-Cons as one pad | BetterJoy or compatible remapping | Requires configuration; Windows does not automatically merge them. |
| Minimize PC setup | Xbox-style controller | A conventional XInput controller is usually simpler for Windows games. |
If your goal is specifically to use the Joy-Cons you already own, start with Windows pairing and add software only when a game requires it. If you want the least troubleshooting, a conventional PC controller may be more straightforward.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I connect Joy-Cons to Windows 11 without a Bluetooth adapter?
Yes, if the PC already has working Bluetooth. A USB Bluetooth adapter is needed only when built-in Bluetooth is absent or unreliable.
Do I need BetterJoy to connect Joy-Cons?
No. Windows can pair original Joy-Cons directly. BetterJoy is useful when a game needs XInput, when two Joy-Cons must act as one pad, or when native detection is insufficient.
Can I connect both Joy-Cons at the same time?
Usually. Pair each one separately, but remember that Windows normally treats them as separate devices rather than automatically combining them.
Do Joy-Cons work in Steam?
They may, depending on the game and Steam Input configuration. Valve’s official controller documentation lists Switch Pro Controllers, not a blanket guarantee of native Joy-Con support.

Yes, but compatibility varies. Try the game’s remapping tools or use BetterJoy to provide XInput output.
Can I use Joy-Con motion controls on Windows 11?
Sometimes, depending on the game or emulator and the software layer. Bluetooth pairing alone does not guarantee gyro or rumble support.
Can I connect Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con 2 controllers the same way?
Do not assume so. Joy-Con 2 compatibility is a separate question and should be verified for the specific controller, Windows version, and software.
