Prepare the controller and host
- Turn on the Xbox console or start the Windows PC before beginning.
- Make sure the Nano controller has enough charge to stay on during pairing. Its battery is internal and rechargeable.
- Keep the controller close to the console or PC. Microsoft specifically advises keeping a device nearby, powered on and in pairing mode when Windows is trying to add it.
- For Bluetooth pairing, use a Windows 10 installation with the Anniversary Update or a later release, or Windows 11.
Connect the Xbox Nano controller to an Xbox console
First-time Xbox Wireless pairing
- Turn on the Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One console.
- Press the Xbox button on the Nano controller. The controller powers on.
- Press the console’s Pair or Sync control.
- Press and hold the controller’s Pair button until the Xbox button begins flashing.
- Wait while the console completes the wireless pairing. The Xbox button remains steadily lit when the connection is complete.

Pair the controller with a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC over Bluetooth
Step-by-step Bluetooth setup
- Press the controller’s Xbox button to turn it on.
- Hold the controller’s Pair button for three seconds. The Xbox button lights up and starts flashing.

- Turn Bluetooth on if it is off.
- Select Add device.
- Choose Bluetooth when Windows asks which type of device to add.
- Select the Xbox controller from the device list.
When pairing succeeds, the controller’s Xbox button remains lit instead of continuing to flash. You can then use it with supported games and Xbox features that recognize a Bluetooth game controller.

What to do when Windows cannot find the controller
Keep the controller close to the PC and make sure it is powered on with the Xbox button flashing. In Windows, return to Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device and run the manual add flow again. Microsoft’s device-setup guidance calls out proximity, power and pairing mode as the conditions to check when a wireless device is not detected automatically.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

The Nano controller has an internal rechargeable battery. Xbox states that charging requires a USB-C cable sold separately. A cable is therefore a charging accessory, not part of the controller package described by that specification.

Choosing a replacement cable
- Confirm that the connector is USB-C at the controller end.
- Check that the listing explicitly supports charging rather than offering a cable intended only for data or a different connector.
- Choose a length that lets the controller reach the charging source without putting strain on the port.
- Use the phrase
USB-C charging cable for Xbox Nano Controllerwhen searching, then verify the connector, charging capability and length in the listing.
The supplied specifications do not establish that a USB-C cable is required for wired gameplay, data transfer or pairing. Treat it as the required charging cable unless the controller’s own documentation says otherwise.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The Xbox button never lights up
- Press the Xbox button once to power the controller on.
- If there is no response, charge the internal battery with a suitable USB-C charging cable, then try again.
- Once the controller powers on, continue with the correct Pair-button sequence for the console or PC method.
The button flashes but the console does not connect
- Verify that the console itself is on.
- Press the console’s Pair/Sync control before holding the controller’s Pair button.
- Move the controller closer to the console and repeat the sequence.
- Wait for the Xbox button to become steady; flashing means pairing has not completed.
Windows Bluetooth does not list the controller
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices and verify that Bluetooth is on.
- Turn the controller on and hold Pair for three seconds until the Xbox button flashes.
- Choose Add device, select Bluetooth, and keep the controller near the PC while the list refreshes.
- If it is still absent, close and reopen the manual Add device flow with the controller remaining in pairing mode.
Windows shows the wrong device category
Use Bluetooth for the Bluetooth procedure. Use Everything else only for the documented Xbox Wireless PC procedure, after the controller’s Xbox button has been made to flash faster by holding Pair.
The controller connected but the light keeps flashing
The documented successful state is a steadily lit Xbox button. Return to the relevant pairing sequence and wait for that steady light before launching a game.
Which procedure should you use?
- Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One: use the console’s Pair/Sync control and Xbox Wireless.
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 with ordinary Bluetooth: use Add device > Bluetooth.
- Windows PC with Xbox Wireless support: use Add device > Everything else and select Xbox Wireless Controller.
- Controller battery low: charge it with a separately purchased USB-C cable before starting the pairing process.
Compatibility notes
The specification names Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Xbox on PC, Windows, Android, iOS and compatible Smart TVs as supported platforms. The Windows Bluetooth instructions specifically cover Windows 10 and Windows 11, with Microsoft noting that Bluetooth pairing requires Windows 10 Anniversary Update or later. Platform compatibility does not change the controller’s charging requirement: the internal battery still needs a USB-C cable sold separately.
