Sign in with that same account on every device, finish Tutorial Island, and play free-to-play before deciding whether membership is worthwhile.
OSRS is a separate game from modern RuneScape. Your characters, items and progress do not transfer between the two, so select Old School RuneScape when you launch and avoid accidentally creating a second account.

The five-minute route to your first OSRS session
- Create a Jagex account with an email address you can access and a strong, unique password.
- On a computer, download the Jagex Launcher for Windows or macOS. On a phone or tablet, install the official Old School RuneScape app from Google Play or the Apple App Store.
- Choose Old School RuneScape in the Launcher or open the mobile app, then sign in with the same Jagex account.
- Complete Tutorial Island. It teaches movement, combat, gathering, skills, banking and the basic interface.
- Stay free-to-play while you learn the game loop. Buy membership only when you specifically want members-only worlds, areas, skills, quests or activities.
You do not need membership, RuneLite or a powerful gaming PC to make your first character. Those are optional decisions after the initial setup.

Old School RuneScape is the version of RuneScape built around the game’s older rules, interface style and progression. Jagex launched it in 2013. It has its own servers, economy, quests and character progression.

Modern RuneScape and OSRS are separate game profiles. A modern RuneScape character cannot be used in OSRS, and an OSRS bank or quest completion cannot be carried into modern RuneScape. When a launcher or app presents both games, select the Old School option deliberately.
Check whether your computer or phone is supported
Jagex’s published requirements are a useful baseline, but operating-system and hardware support can change. Check the live requirements page if your device is close to the minimum or has an unusual graphics configuration.

These figures describe the client’s published compatibility guidance, not a promise of identical frame rates on every device. A phone that technically meets the version requirement may still run hot, drain its battery quickly or struggle when many effects are visible. Keep extra free storage for operating-system updates and cached data.
Practical checks before installing
- Update Windows, macOS, Android or iOS before downloading the game.
- Confirm that your device has enough free space beyond the client’s approximately 200 MB listing.
- On a laptop or phone, test Wi-Fi or mobile data in the place where you expect to play.
- Use a device you can keep charged for longer sessions; mobile play can increase heat and battery use.
Create the right account before you download
Start from Jagex’s account creation page and choose New account if you have never made a character. Use an email address you can recover and a password that is not reused on another service. Your email is important for verification, password recovery and security notices.
Jagex allows characters to be attached to a Jagex account. Up to 20 RuneScape characters can be linked, but linked characters cannot be removed, so do not attach a character to an account you do not control. If you upgrade or import an older character into a Jagex account, the change is permanent; Jagex warns that there is no way to return to the old login arrangement afterward.

Using an older RuneScape login
If you already played an older version of RuneScape, follow Jagex’s upgrade or import flow rather than making a second account by accident. Read the character-selection screen carefully and verify the email address before confirming. A new Jagex account is the cleanest route for a first OSRS character.
Install OSRS on Windows or macOS
- Download and install the official Jagex Launcher for your operating system.
- Open the Launcher and sign in to your Jagex account.
- Choose Old School RuneScape from the game library.
- Launch the official client and sign in if prompted.
- Select the world and character options shown by the client, then begin the tutorial.
The Launcher is Jagex’s unified desktop library. Installing it first avoids hunting for separate executables and gives you one place to launch the supported desktop clients. If your operating system blocks an installer, download it again from Jagex’s own site, check that the file is intended for your operating system and make sure security software has not quarantined it.
Should a beginner use RuneLite?
RuneLite is optional. The official client is the lowest-complexity choice for a first launch: it has fewer decisions, follows the standard interface and lets you learn the game without configuring plugins.
If you later want interface enhancements, guidance overlays or other plugin-based features, Jagex documents the supported installation route: open the Jagex Launcher, open the Play dropdown next to Old School RuneScape and select RuneLite. The Launcher can download and launch it for you. Jagex’s support documentation states that RuneLite can now be installed and launched through the Launcher.
Use that integrated route rather than downloading a similarly named executable from a search result. Plugins can change what appears on screen, so add them gradually and understand what each one does. For learning the basics, the official client remains a sensible starting point.

Install OSRS on Android or iPhone and iPad
- Open Google Play on Android or the Apple App Store on iPhone or iPad.
- Search for the official Old School RuneScape app and verify that the publisher is Jagex.
- Install the app, open it and sign in with the Jagex account you created for desktop play.
- Allow downloads to finish on a reliable connection before starting a long session.
- Complete Tutorial Island and adjust the interface for your screen size and touch controls.
The official app supports the same account on mobile and desktop. Use the existing login instead of selecting a new-character option on your phone; otherwise you can create a second character and wonder where your computer progress went.
What mobile play is good for
- Short sessions while travelling, waiting or relaxing away from a desk.
- Simple gathering, banking, skilling and routine tasks that do not require many precise clicks.
- Keeping the same character available when you move between a computer and a phone.
Where a PC is usually easier
- Combat or activities that require fast, precise clicks.
- Reading large inventories, maps, chat panels and multiple interfaces at once.
- Long sessions where a physical mouse, keyboard and larger display reduce hand strain.
Mobile and desktop are access choices, not separate versions of your character. Your progress is stored with the account, while the controls, screen size, battery use and comfort differ by device.
Complete Tutorial Island before judging the game
Tutorial Island introduces the actions that make up OSRS: walking, camera control, interaction menus, combat, fishing, cooking, mining, prayer, equipment, inventory and banking. Follow each instructor’s prompt even if you already know what the action does; several systems are unlocked or explained in sequence.
Beginner habits worth learning during the tutorial
- Read the action menu before clicking. Many objects have several possible interactions.
- Watch your health and food supplies during combat.
- Learn where your inventory, equipment and settings panels are located.
- Practice moving the camera and rotating the view, especially on mobile.
- Notice how the bank stores items and how equipment slots work.
After the final tutorial section, you arrive in the main game world. You can then explore free-to-play towns, train skills, follow quests and decide what type of play you enjoy before spending money.
Free-to-play or membership?
Free-to-play is enough to create an account, finish the tutorial and understand OSRS’s core loop. You can train skills, earn and spend in-game currency, complete free quests and learn the interface without subscribing.

Membership expands the game with additional areas, quests, skills, activities, worlds and progression routes. Treat it as an expansion decision rather than a setup requirement. Play long enough to know whether you enjoy the game’s deliberate pace, repeated training and player-driven economy.
When membership makes sense
- You have completed enough free content to know that you want more areas and quests.
- You understand which character should receive the purchase.
- You are comfortable with the game’s basic controls, banking and account security.
- You want members-only skills or activities rather than simply a faster tutorial.
Jagex’s account support guidance says a purchase is made for a selected character and that membership applies to RuneScape and Old School RuneScape for that character. Confirm the selected character at checkout. Official pages do not establish one universal current price for every country and currency, so check the live Jagex checkout for the amount shown in your region rather than relying on an old price quoted elsewhere.
PC versus mobile: choose the device that fits the session

Many players use both: a computer for demanding interfaces and mobile for convenient, lower-intensity sessions. The important step is signing into the same account on both platforms.

Use Jagex-owned pages for the Launcher and official client, and use the official Google Play or Apple App Store listing for mobile. Do not use a third-party mirror or a download promoted through an unsolicited message. A fake client can steal credentials even if its name resembles the real game.

- Type the Jagex site address yourself rather than following a suspicious shortened link.
- Never enter your Jagex email or password into an unrelated website.
- Use a unique password and keep recovery access to your email secure.
- Do not share verification codes or approve a login you did not start.
The Jagex Launcher also reduces the risk of choosing an unofficial desktop executable because supported clients appear in one library.

Common setup problems and fixes
The Launcher does not install
Confirm that Windows is 64-bit and at least Windows 10, or that your Mac is running macOS 11 or newer. Apply pending system updates, restart and download the installer again from Jagex. If antivirus software quarantines the installer, verify its source before allowing it; never disable security tools for an unknown file.
The app is unavailable in the store
Check your device version against Android 9 or newer and iOS 13 or newer. Store availability can vary by region and account settings. Do not replace the official app with an unverified package simply because it appears in a web search.
I cannot find my character on another device
Sign out and compare the email address used on both devices. Make sure you launched Old School RuneScape rather than modern RuneScape, and check whether you accidentally created a new character during mobile setup. Characters attached to different Jagex accounts will not share progress.

The game is slow or the phone gets hot
Close other demanding apps, lower visual settings where available, use a stable connection and keep the device out of direct heat. On a laptop, connect power for long sessions. Meeting the published requirements does not guarantee identical performance on every model.
I bought membership for the wrong character
Stop before making another purchase and review the character selected in your Jagex account and checkout history. Jagex states that purchases are tied to the selected character, so contact official Jagex support with the transaction details rather than attempting to move the purchase yourself.
A sensible first-week plan
- Finish Tutorial Island and learn where the inventory, equipment, settings and bank interfaces are located.
- Explore the nearest free-to-play towns and speak to non-player characters who offer beginner quests.
- Try several skills instead of committing immediately to one training method. This shows which activities you find enjoyable.
- Bank items you do not need, keep basic food and equipment available, and read quest instructions before travelling.
- Use the official client for a few sessions. Add RuneLite later only if you want its optional interface and plugin features.
- Review your account security before considering membership, then purchase only for the character you intend to keep.
This approach gives you a working account on every device, a safe installation path and enough free-to-play experience to make an informed membership decision.
