Local servers can use the “Connect to [ComputerName] on LAN” option, while private or unlisted servers require an address, port or cfx.re/join/... link from the owner.
What you need before connecting
FiveM is a PC multiplayer client for Grand Theft Auto V. It does not replace the game installation: the client needs an up-to-date copy of GTAV and must be able to locate the game executable.

GTA5.exe. - FiveM. Download the client from the official FiveM site, run
FiveM.exe, and complete its first-run setup. - A Cfx account. Sign in when FiveM requests it during setup.
- A connection route. You can discover a public server in the browser, use a LAN entry for a nearby server, or obtain a public IP and port, URL, or
cfx.re/join/...link from the server owner.
Your route determines what information you need. A public server normally needs only its listing. A private server may require allowlisting as well as a direct endpoint, and a server on your home network may be reachable only through a LAN address.
Install and set up FiveM
- Install or update GTAV. Finish any pending game update before launching FiveM. An outdated game build can prevent the client from completing setup or joining a server.
- Download and run FiveM. Start the downloaded
FiveM.exeinstaller. When it asks for the game location, browse to the installation that containsGTA5.exe, select that executable, and continue. - Sign in to Cfx. Complete the account sign-in requested by the setup wizard. The account is used by the FiveM platform and does not substitute for any server-specific admission rule.
- Finish the initial files and configuration. Allow the client to complete its first launch before attempting to connect. Close and reopen FiveM if the setup window reports that it needs to restart.
If the installer cannot find the game, do not select a shortcut or a launcher program. Use the actual GTA5.exe file in the installed GTAV directory. If you have more than one GTAV installation, select the one you intend to use with FiveM.

Join a public server from the FiveM browser
The server browser is the simplest route when the server is publicly listed.
- Launch FiveM after installation has completed.
- Open the server list and browse or search for the server you want.
- Select its entry and use the available connect control.
- Wait for the server resources to download and for the game session to load. The first connection can take longer while required resources are cached.
A listing does not guarantee open admission. Server owners can require allowlisting or other entry rules. If the server is private, the browser may show a disabled connect button or omit the server entirely. Follow the owner’s application or allowlist instructions, then use the supplied route if the owner gives you one.

Connect to a server on your local network
Use the LAN route when the FiveM server is running on the same home, office or other local network as your PC. The official local-server flow provides a button labelled “Connect to [ComputerName] on LAN.”
- Start the FiveM server on the computer hosting it.
- Put the joining PC and the host on the same local network. A wired and wireless device can work together if the router permits traffic between them.
- Open FiveM on the joining PC and look for the Connect to [ComputerName] on LAN button.
- Select that button to initiate the session.
If the LAN button does not appear, restart the FiveM client as directed by the local-server guide. Also verify that the server process is already running and that both computers are actually connected to the same network rather than one being on a guest or isolated Wi-Fi network.
A LAN-only server is intentionally different from a public server. It may be configured so that it is not advertised to the public browser. Players outside the host’s network cannot use its private LAN address unless the owner creates a separate reachable route.
Connect with an IP address and port
When you know a server endpoint, FiveM’s client console can connect without searching the browser.

- Open FiveM.
- Press F8 to open the client console.
- Enter the command below, replacing the example endpoint with the address supplied by the server owner:
connect IP:Port
For example:
connect 127.0.0.1:30120
127.0.0.1 means “this computer,” so that example is useful when the server is running locally on the same PC. It is not the address you normally give to a friend connecting over the internet. The port in the example, 30120, is an operational example; use the port configured by the server.
The connect command also accepts a URL and a FiveM join link. Paste the complete value after the command, for example:
connect https://example.invalid/server
Do not treat the example URL as a real server address. Use the exact URL or cfx.re/join/... link supplied by the owner. If a link opens FiveM automatically, approve the handoff and let the client complete the connection.
Which connection route should you use?
| Route | How you discover it | Network scope | Admission control | Setup burden |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Server browser | Search the public FiveM list | Usually internet-accessible | Open, allowlisted or private according to the owner | Lowest for joining an existing server |
| LAN button | FiveM detects a nearby host and shows “Connect to [ComputerName] on LAN” | Same local network | Controlled by the local server configuration | Low, but both devices must share a working LAN |
| IP and port | Owner supplies an endpoint | LAN or public internet, depending on the address | May still require allowlisting or a password process outside the connection command | Moderate; you must enter the exact endpoint |
| URL or cfx.re join link | Owner supplies a link | Determined by the linked server | Determined by the linked server | Low after you receive a valid link |
| Operating your own server | You configure the server and endpoint | LAN, public internet or a hosted network | You choose the server rules | Highest; requires server setup, networking and maintenance |
The browser is best for finding an open public community. Use a LAN entry for a quick local test, an IP or port when an owner has not published a listing, and a join link when the owner wants to distribute a single clickable route.
Fix “FiveM can’t find my server” and failed connections
1. Confirm that the server is running
Ask the owner to verify that the server process is started and has finished loading. A listing can disappear or refuse connections while the server is stopped, restarting or still preparing its resources.
2. Test the server’s public information endpoint
From a web browser, open:
http://ip:port/info.json
Replace ip and port with the server’s public address and configured port. A working endpoint should return server information. If the browser cannot reach it, the problem is outside the FiveM client: check the server process, the address, the port and the network path before trying the command again.

These eye-catching lights give your setup a gamer-ready look while maintaining focus on performance. (*Note: The USB connector is for LED lighting only)
3. Check port forwarding and firewall rules
When a direct connection fails, incorrect port forwarding or a firewall blocking the connection is a likely cause. On the host’s router, forward the server’s configured port to the computer running the FiveM server. On that computer, allow the server application and its required traffic through the operating-system firewall. Re-test /info.json after each change.
Router interfaces differ, so use the router’s port-forwarding page and make sure the destination is the host computer’s current LAN address. A rule aimed at an old DHCP address can silently stop working after the host reconnects.
4. Use the public address from outside the network
A player connecting from another household needs the host’s public IP address and externally reachable port, not an address such as 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x or another private LAN address. Private addresses work only within the appropriate local network. The owner should provide the endpoint that is reachable from the internet.
5. Check whether the server is LAN-only
A server configured with sv_lan true is intended for local-network play and will not appear in the public list. Obtain the correct LAN endpoint from the host, or ask the owner to provide a public connection route if players are outside the network.
6. Check whether the server is private or allowlisted
Private configuration can prevent a server from appearing publicly or disable its browser connect control. Being able to reach the endpoint does not automatically grant admission. Ask the owner whether your account, identifiers or other required details have been allowlisted and whether a password or invitation process applies.
7. Restart the client when local discovery is stale
If a known local server is running but the LAN button is missing, fully restart FiveM and check again. This is the documented first recovery step for the local-server flow. If discovery still fails, use the host’s LAN address and port through the F8 console, provided the owner has supplied them.

8. Distinguish a client problem from a server problem
- If FiveM cannot locate
GTA5.exe, repair the installation path and complete the client setup before troubleshooting networking. - If the browser works but one server does not, test that server’s endpoint and admission rules rather than reinstalling FiveM.
- If
/info.jsonresponds but the console command is rejected, recheck the exact IP, port, URL or join link and whether the server requires allowlisting. - If the endpoint is unreachable from outside but works on the host’s LAN, investigate forwarding, firewall and the public-versus-private address distinction.
How server owners make a server connectable
Running a server is a separate task from joining one. Cfx’s setup documentation provides paths for Windows, Linux, txAdmin and game-server hosting providers. Before beginning server setup, register a free Cfx license key. The chosen setup path determines how you configure resources, networking and administration.
For a LAN test server
Keep the server on the same network as the players, provide the host computer name or LAN address, and use the LAN button when it appears. A LAN-only configuration can be appropriate for testing or a private household session, but it will not advertise the server to the public browser.
For an internet-accessible server
Choose the server’s listening port, forward that port from the router to the host, permit the traffic through the host firewall, and give players the public IP and port or a join link. Test the public /info.json endpoint from a network that is not the host’s LAN before inviting players.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a controlled community
Use the server’s privacy and allowlisting controls when only approved players should enter. Tell prospective players whether they must apply, provide an identifier, use a password or connect through a supplied URL. A private server may not have an active browser connect button, so direct instructions are part of the server’s onboarding.
Practical connection examples
Joining a listed public community
- Install and update GTAV, then complete FiveM’s setup and sign-in.
- Open the browser and search the community’s name.
- Select the listing and connect.
- If the button is disabled, follow the community’s allowlist instructions instead of repeatedly clicking the listing.
Joining a friend’s computer on the same network
- Have your friend start the FiveM server.
- Confirm both computers are on the same non-isolated network.
- Restart FiveM if necessary and select Connect to [ComputerName] on LAN.
- If discovery remains unavailable, ask for the host’s LAN IP and port and enter it with F8.
Joining a remote private server
- Ask the owner for the public IP and port, URL or
cfx.re/join/...link. - Complete any allowlist or invitation requirement first.
- Press F8 and run
connect IP:Port, or use the supplied URL or join link. - If it fails, test
http://ip:port/info.jsonand report whether it returns server information.
Safety and accuracy checks before using an endpoint
- Copy the address and port exactly; a single missing digit sends you to a different endpoint.
- Prefer a link or address supplied through the server’s established community channel, since an unknown endpoint can lead to an unintended server.
- Do not substitute your private LAN address for a public address when helping someone outside your network.
- Do not assume that a reachable server is open to everyone; privacy and allowlisting are separate from network reachability.
Once FiveM is installed correctly, most players need only one of four things: a browser listing, a LAN button, an IP-and-port endpoint, or a join link. When none works, checking the server process, the public /info.json response, forwarding, firewall rules and the server’s admission settings identifies whether the failure is on the client, the network or the server configuration.
