Connect to a Redis instance on a VPS with redis-cli -h <host> -p <port>, then authenticate with an ACL username and password or the server’s configured password. Before allowing remote access, restrict the Redis port in the VPS firewall and bind Redis only to the interface your authorized clients require. Use TLS whenever the connection crosses a network you do not fully trust.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
What you need before connecting
A Redis connection is defined by four practical details: the VPS hostname or IP address, the Redis TCP port, authentication credentials, and—if the application uses one—the logical database number. Redis commonly listens on TCP port 6379, but a VPS may be configured with another port, so use the value in the active Redis configuration rather than assuming the default.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- VPS endpoint: the DNS name or IP address that authorized clients can reach.
- Redis port: commonly
6379, or the configured TLS port when TLS is enabled. - Credentials: an ACL username and password on Redis 6 and later, or the legacy shared password configured with
requirepass. - Database number: optional; omit it for the default database and include it when the application is assigned another logical database.
- Client software: a
redis-cliversion compatible with the server and the TLS/authentication options you intend to use.
Do not put a password directly in a command line if your shell history is retained. The REDISCLI_AUTH environment variable keeps the secret out of the command’s argument list, although the value can still be exposed to processes or diagnostics according to your operating system’s rules.
Secure the VPS before permitting a remote connection
Redis is designed for trusted clients inside trusted environments. A publicly reachable Redis listener is therefore a security configuration, not merely a connectivity setting. An attacker who can reach an unprotected instance may read or alter data, issue administrative commands, or use the service as part of a wider compromise.

Restrict the firewall to trusted sources
On an internet-exposed VPS, firewall the Redis port so only the application host, private network, VPN, or administrator IP ranges that genuinely need Redis can connect. A cloud security group or provider firewall may apply before the operating-system firewall, so check both layers when a connection times out.
If Redis is used only by applications on the same VPS, do not open its port to the internet at all. Keep the listener on the loopback interface and have local clients connect through that interface.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Bind Redis to the correct interface
The Redis bind setting controls which local addresses accept connections. Use bind 127.0.0.1 when every client is local. For a separate private client, bind to the specific private interface that must receive traffic and allow that client’s source address in the firewall. Binding to 0.0.0.0 exposes Redis on every IPv4 interface and should not be treated as the default for a VPS.
Understand protected mode
Protected mode is a safety response to potentially unsafe exposure. When Redis detects an unsafe default arrangement, it can reject non-loopback requests rather than accepting remote traffic. Disabling protected mode blindly removes that safety check; it does not fix a missing firewall rule, an incorrect bind address, or absent authentication. Correct the network and authentication configuration instead.
Choose an authentication method
ACLs for Redis 6 and later
Redis ACLs provide named users and fine-grained permissions for commands and key patterns. Create or use a dedicated application identity rather than sharing a full-privilege account among services. Grant only the commands and keyspace access that the application needs, and rotate credentials using the operational process for your VPS.
At connection time, supply the ACL username and password through the client’s username/password options or a Redis URL. URL credentials must be percent-encoded when they contain reserved characters such as @, :, /, ?, or #.

requirepass legacy authentication
requirepass is the older shared-password method. It can still protect an installation, but every client uses the same secret and receives the permissions associated with that authentication model. Use a long, unique secret and plan a move to ACL users when you need separate identities or command restrictions.
Test Redis locally on the VPS
Testing on the server separates Redis-service problems from firewall, routing, and bind problems. Log in to the VPS through your normal administrative channel and run:
redis-cli PING
A healthy local listener returns:
PONG
If authentication is required, repeat the test with the configured credentials. A local failure means Redis may not be running, may be listening on another port, may require TLS, or may be rejecting the credentials. Resolve that condition before testing from another machine.
Connect from an authorized remote client
Plain TCP with a password
For a non-TLS endpoint protected by a password, set REDISCLI_AUTH for the individual command:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsREDISCLI_AUTH='<password>' redis-cli -h <vps-host> -p <port> PING
Replace the placeholders with the reachable VPS hostname or address and the configured Redis port. A successful response is PONG. The command uses the default logical database; append the client’s database-selection option when the application uses another database number.
ACL username and password
For an ACL account, provide the username as well as the password using the client’s username option, or use a Redis URL in the form:

redis://<username>:<password>@<host>:<port>/<db-number>
The path component selects the logical database. Omit it when the default database is intended. Encode reserved characters in both username and password before placing them in the URL; otherwise the client can parse part of the credential as URL syntax and authentication will fail.
When the VPS uses a non-default port
Always pass the configured port explicitly with -p. A connection to port 6379 can fail even when Redis is healthy if the service was moved to another port or if the firewall exposes only the custom port. Confirm that the port in the client command, Redis listener, and firewall rule is identical.

Plain Redis TCP carries commands, responses, credentials, and data without transport encryption. Use TLS when the path crosses a network you do not fully trust, such as the public internet or an untrusted shared segment.
One-way TLS with a trusted CA
For a TLS-enabled endpoint, specify the TLS port and the CA certificate that validates the Redis server certificate:
redis-cli -h <host> -p <tls-port> --tls --cacert <redis_cert>.pem PING
The CA file must contain the issuing certificate chain trusted by the client. The hostname used with -h should match the certificate identity when the client performs hostname validation.
Mutual TLS
When the server requires client certificates, add the client certificate and private key:

redis-cli -h <host> -p <tls-port> --tls --cacert <redis_cert>.pem --cert <client.crt> --key <client.key> PING
Protect the private key with filesystem permissions appropriate to the service account. A certificate issued by the wrong authority, an expired certificate, or a key that does not match the certificate will stop the TLS handshake before Redis authentication is attempted.
Use the TLS URL scheme in applications
Redis documents rediss:// as the TLS URL scheme. Use that scheme in clients that accept Redis URLs, include the correct TLS port, and configure the client’s CA and—when required—client certificate settings through its documented options.
Prohibit plaintext when TLS is mandatory
If every client must use encryption, configure a TLS listener and set the non-TLS port 0. This prevents accidental fallback to an unencrypted endpoint. Verify that all clients support TLS before removing the plaintext listener, and test the change from an authorized client.

Diagnose failures in the right order
Start with the lowest layer that could explain the symptom. Changing passwords will not repair a blocked port, and changing firewall rules will not repair an invalid ACL.
Timeout or connection refused
- Check that the Redis service is running and listening on the expected port.
- Confirm the client is using the VPS address and port actually configured for Redis.
- Review the VPS operating-system firewall and any cloud security-group rule.
- Verify that Redis is bound to an interface reachable from the client. A loopback-only bind rejects remote paths by design.
- Check routing, private-network membership, VPN status, and source-IP allowlists.
A timeout commonly indicates filtering or routing. An immediate refusal usually means no service is listening at that address and port, or an intermediary actively rejected the connection.
Protected-mode error
This means Redis is rejecting a non-loopback request under its safety defaults. Do not solve it by exposing Redis broadly or disabling protected mode without a complete security design. Establish a restricted bind address, an allowlisted firewall rule, and authentication, then retest from an authorized source.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
NOAUTH or ACL errors
- Check whether the client sent a password at all.
- For ACLs, verify the username and password belong together; a legacy password alone is not a substitute for the intended ACL identity.
- Confirm that the user is enabled and permitted to run the command or access the key pattern the application uses.
- Look for shell quoting mistakes and URL-reserved characters that were not encoded.
These errors generally prove that the client reached Redis; focus on credentials and permissions rather than opening additional network access.

- Use the TLS port with
--tls; sending plaintext to a TLS port, or TLS to a plaintext port, produces a protocol mismatch. - Confirm that the CA file validates the server certificate and that the certificate is current.
- For mutual TLS, verify the client certificate, private key, and any required issuing chain.
- Ensure the client supports the server’s TLS configuration and that the hostname matches the certificate identity.
Logical databases and application configuration
Redis can expose multiple logical database numbers through the same endpoint. A successful PING only proves that the connection reached Redis; it does not prove that the application selected the intended database or can access the expected keys. Include the database number in the client configuration or Redis URL when the deployment assigns a non-default database, and keep that choice consistent across application instances, workers, and maintenance scripts.
Prefer environment or secret-management facilities for endpoints and credentials rather than committing them to source control. Rotate passwords and certificates without printing them in logs, and ensure monitoring checks do not record complete connection URLs containing secrets.
Self-hosted VPS Redis versus managed Redis
A VPS gives you direct control over the Redis process and network, but that control includes every security and maintenance responsibility. A managed Redis service shifts much of the operational work to the provider. The right choice depends on whether your team can maintain secure networking, authentication, backups, updates, and incident response.
| Responsibility | Redis on your VPS | Managed Redis service |
|---|---|---|
| Network exposure | You choose bind addresses, firewall rules, private networking, and allowed sources. | The provider supplies an access model, while you still configure client-side network access and credentials. |
| Firewall and TLS | You configure the VPS or cloud firewall, certificate trust, TLS ports, and optional mutual TLS. | The service defines available TLS and network controls; you integrate clients with its endpoint and certificates. |
| Credentials and ACLs | You create, restrict, rotate, and revoke Redis users or the legacy shared password. | The provider may integrate credential management, but you remain responsible for application identities and permissions. |
| Backups and updates | You schedule and verify backups and apply Redis and operating-system updates. | Backup and patch features are part of the service offering and must be checked against your recovery requirements. |
| Operational cost | You pay for the VPS and the time required to operate it. | You pay the provider for the managed service and its included capacity or features. |
| Latency and placement | You select the VPS location and can place Redis near your application. | You select an available service region and must account for the provider’s network path. |
| Provider lock-in | Configuration and data remain under your infrastructure control, subject to your migration process. | Service-specific networking, backups, and APIs can make migration more involved. |
For a small deployment with a private network and staff comfortable operating Linux services, a VPS can be appropriate. If your team cannot reliably maintain firewall rules, TLS, credentials, backups, and updates, managed Redis hosting can reduce operational risk even when its direct price is higher.

A repeatable connection checklist
- Record the VPS hostname or IP, configured Redis port, database number, and the intended ACL or password credentials.
- Decide whether clients are local, on a private network, over a VPN, or crossing the public internet.
- Bind Redis only to the interfaces required for that client path.
- Allow the Redis port only from trusted source addresses in every applicable firewall or security-group layer.
- Use an ACL user on Redis 6 and later when you need named identities or fine-grained permissions; otherwise protect the legacy setup with a long unique password.
- Run
redis-cli PINGon the VPS and confirmPONG. - Run the appropriate remote command with the host, port, credentials, and database selection.
- Add
--tlsand--cacertfor an encrypted endpoint, plus--certand--keyfor mutual TLS. - If the test fails, classify the symptom as network, protected mode, authentication/ACL, or TLS and correct that layer before changing others.
