Short answer: A subdomain-based WordPress Multisite network needs two matching layers: a wildcard DNS record that sends every subdomain to your server, and web-server routing that sends those hostnames to the same WordPress installation. After both are working, enable Multisite, choose the subdomain option in Network Setup, apply WordPress’s generated configuration, and verify the installer can resolve a random hostname before creating production sites.

What wildcard subdomains do in WordPress Multisite
WordPress Multisite can identify each site by either a path or a hostname. In a domain-based network, sites use hostnames such as site1.example.com, store.example.com, or community.example.com instead of paths such as example.com/site1.

A wildcard subdomain is a catch-all DNS rule for names below your main domain. The usual record is *.example.com. It tells DNS where an otherwise unlisted subdomain should go. Your web server must then accept that hostname and serve the same directory that contains WordPress. DNS alone is not enough: if Apache, Nginx, or your hosting panel does not recognize the hostname, the request can still produce a default-site page, a 404, or a certificate error.
Wildcard subdomains matter when sites must be created on demand. WordPress Developer Resources describes them as useful for allowing end users of a domain-based network to create new sites, and the WordPress documentation says that on-demand domain-based sites require the wildcard-subdomains method. A network with a fixed, small set of subdomains can sometimes be configured individually, but that is not the same as supporting arbitrary new sites.

Check these requirements before changing WordPress
- DNS control: You need access to the authoritative DNS provider for
example.com, or to the control panel that manages its zone. - Web-server control: You must be able to add a wildcard virtual-host alias or use a host that exposes an equivalent setting.
- A root installation: WordPress’s documented subdomain setup assumes WordPress is served from the web-folder root. A non-root installation can work, but it needs deliberate virtual-host and redirect configuration.
- Rewrite support: On Apache,
mod_rewrite,.htaccesssupport, and suitableAllowOverridepermissions must be available. - HTTPS planning: The primary domain needs a certificate, and every additional hostname or mapped domain must be covered by an appropriate certificate and SNI configuration.
- A test hostname: Plan to use WordPress’s random-hostname check during Network Setup rather than assuming the wildcard works.
Make a backup of the existing wp-config.php and server configuration before applying generated rules. Keep a record of the current document root and rewrite settings so a failed change can be reversed without changing site URLs or database values.
Subdomains or subdirectories?
Choose the address model before enabling the network. WordPress does not treat a later switch between models as a casual setting change; migration can require URL updates, redirects, and careful handling of existing content.

| Decision point | Subdomain network | Subdirectory network |
|---|---|---|
| URL format | https://site1.example.com |
https://example.com/site1 |
| DNS | Requires a wildcard entry such as *.example.com for on-demand sites. |
No wildcard DNS is needed because every site stays under the main hostname. |
| On-demand site creation | Supported when wildcard DNS and wildcard server routing both work. | Works without wildcard hostnames. |
| Hosting compatibility | Requires a host or panel that accepts wildcard virtual-host routing and points it at the WordPress directory. | Usually simpler on hosts that provide only one web root and limited DNS control. |
| Migration complexity | Hostname changes, redirects, cookies, certificates, and DNS must be coordinated. | Path changes still require redirects and URL work, but there are no per-site hostnames to route. |
| SSL and domain mapping | Plan certificate coverage for the main domain and its subdomains; mapped external domains add separate DNS and SNI work. | The main domain’s certificate normally covers the site paths; mapped external domains still need their own DNS and certificate planning. |
Use subdomains when each site should look like its own hostname and you control DNS and server routing. Use subdirectories when wildcard DNS is unavailable, the host will not accept wildcard aliases, or a shared hostname is preferable.
Configure wildcard DNS
1. Add the wildcard record at the authoritative provider
Create a DNS record for the subdomain wildcard. The official WordPress example is:
*.example.com A 192.0.2.1
Replace 192.0.2.1 with the address of the server that serves WordPress. The value above is a documentation example, not an address to copy into production. If your provider uses a separate record editor, set the host/name to *, the type to A, and the value to your server’s IPv4 address. Add the equivalent IPv6 record only when your web server is correctly configured for IPv6.

The wildcard must exist at the authoritative DNS service, not merely in a local hosts file. A local override can make one computer appear to work while visitors and WordPress’s installer still fail. Keep the main domain’s existing records intact; the wildcard handles names below the domain and does not replace the apex record.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2. Allow time for DNS changes to be visible
After saving the record, test from a resolver or network outside your administration workstation. Check a name that does not yet have its own record, such as random-check.example.com. It should resolve to the same server address as the main site. If it does not, verify that you edited the authoritative zone, that the record name was entered as * rather than a literal subdomain, and that an existing more-specific record is not sending the test name elsewhere.
Route wildcard hostnames in the web server
Apache
In the virtual host that serves the main WordPress installation, add the wildcard alias:
ServerAlias *.example.com
The alias must be attached to the same virtual host and document root as the primary domain. A DNS lookup can succeed while Apache still selects a different default virtual host, so verify the complete request path: the hostname reaches the server, Apache selects the WordPress virtual host, and that virtual host serves the WordPress directory.
Apache also needs mod_rewrite, permission to read the network’s .htaccess, and an AllowOverride setting that permits the required rewrite directives. If the server ignores .htaccess, the main site may load while subsites return 404 errors.

Nginx and hosting panels
For Nginx, configure the server block’s wildcard name and point its document root at the existing WordPress directory. The exact syntax and reload process depend on the host’s layout, so do not copy an Apache directive into Nginx. cPanel, Plesk, and DirectAdmin may expose equivalent wildcard-domain or virtual-host fields; use those fields to select the same document root rather than creating a second, empty site.
On managed hosting, ask specifically whether the plan supports wildcard DNS, wildcard virtual-host routing, and WordPress Multisite. A panel that lets you create individual subdomains but cannot route arbitrary names will not satisfy the on-demand requirement.
Enable the WordPress network
1. Turn on the Multisite setup screen
Open the root installation’s wp-config.php and add:
define( 'WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE', true );
Place the definition in the configuration file where WordPress loads it, then sign in to the administrator dashboard. The network setup screen will become available under Tools → Network Setup.

2. Select the subdomain address model
In Network Setup, choose the Sub-domains option rather than sub-directories. WordPress may display a warning when the installation is not at the web-folder root. Treat that warning as a routing problem to solve, not as a prompt to continue blindly.

3. Apply every generated configuration change
WordPress displays constants for wp-config.php and rewrite rules for the server configuration. Copy the generated values exactly into the indicated files. Do not substitute a subdirectory rule set for a subdomain rule set, and do not omit a constant because the dashboard appears to load.
After saving the changes, sign out and back in if WordPress requests it. Clear any server or proxy cache that could preserve the pre-Multisite response, then open the Network Admin area and confirm that the network address uses your intended primary domain.
4. Use WP-CLI when the installation is managed from the shell
WP-CLI provides a subdomain installation option:
wp core multisite-install --subdomains ...
Use the command only after the database, primary URL, web root, and server routing are ready. The ellipsis represents the remaining arguments required by your installation; it is not a literal value to paste. The same wildcard DNS and virtual-host requirements apply to a command-line installation.
Verify the random-hostname test before creating sites
The Network screen tests a randomly generated hostname. This is a meaningful prerequisite check: it exercises DNS and web-server routing before you depend on a newly created site. If the random hostname does not resolve or does not reach WordPress, stop and fix the infrastructure rather than changing site URLs or editing the database.
- Confirm the random hostname is below the domain covered by your wildcard record.
- Resolve it from an external DNS resolver and confirm that it returns the intended server address.
- Request the hostname over HTTP and verify that the same WordPress installation, not a hosting-provider placeholder, answers.
- Check that the virtual host serves the directory containing
wp-config.phpandwp-admin. - Return to Network Setup and rerun the check after DNS propagation or server changes are complete.
Once the check passes, create a test subsite and visit its full URL. Confirm that the dashboard, front end, login redirect, and HTTPS behavior all use the new hostname before inviting users or importing content.

How HTTPS and mapped domains change the plan
Wildcard subdomains on the primary domain
Every HTTPS hostname must be covered by a certificate that browsers trust. A certificate for only example.com does not automatically cover site1.example.com. Plan certificate coverage for the primary domain and the subdomain names your network will serve. A wildcard certificate can cover many subdomains when its scope matches the names you use, but the certificate still must be installed on the server that terminates HTTPS.
Mapped custom domains
A mapped site such as https://customer-domain.example adds another DNS and TLS boundary. Point that domain to the network’s server, configure the mapping in the Multisite environment, and obtain certificate coverage for the mapped hostname. The primary domain’s certificate does not cover unrelated domains. Server Name Indication (SNI) is required when one HTTPS server presents different certificates for multiple domains, so verify that the host supports SNI and that each certificate is selected for the correct hostname.

Troubleshoot DNS errors, 404s, and wrong sites
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The random hostname does not resolve. | The wildcard record is missing, was added at the wrong DNS provider, or is not visible yet. | Check the authoritative zone, the wildcard name, the server address, and DNS visibility from outside your local network. |
| DNS resolves, but a hosting placeholder or unrelated site appears. | The web server does not accept the wildcard hostname or selects the wrong virtual host. | Verify Apache’s ServerAlias *.example.com, the equivalent Nginx server name, and the document-root mapping. |
| The main site works but a new subsite returns 404. | Multisite rewrite rules are missing or ignored. | Confirm the generated rules were applied, Apache has mod_rewrite, and .htaccess is allowed by AllowOverride. |
| The network setup warns about a non-root installation. | The web root and the URL path do not match the assumptions of the subdomain configuration. | Review the virtual-host root and redirects, or use a subdirectory network if the host cannot support the required routing. |
| HTTPS shows a certificate warning on a subsite. | The certificate covers the main domain but not the requested subdomain, or the wrong certificate is selected. | Check certificate names, wildcard scope, certificate installation, and SNI selection. |
| A mapped external domain fails while native subdomains work. | The mapped domain has separate DNS, certificate, or SNI requirements. | Resolve the external hostname, confirm it reaches the server, and verify certificate coverage for that exact name. |
- Do not edit database URLs to compensate for a hostname that does not resolve.
- Do not create dozens of individual DNS records when the requirement is on-demand subsite creation; fix the wildcard path instead.
- Do not test only from a cached browser session. Use a new hostname and an external resolver so that stale DNS or redirects are less likely to hide the fault.
- When changing both DNS and the virtual host, test each layer separately: DNS address first, HTTP host routing second, WordPress rewrites third, and HTTPS last.
Operating a wildcard Multisite network safely
Document the primary domain, DNS provider, server document root, virtual-host definition, certificate coverage, and the exact generated WordPress rules. That record makes future migrations easier and prevents an administrator from recreating the network with a different address model by accident.
Whenever you add a new server, proxy, CDN, or HTTPS terminator, repeat the random-hostname test. The requirement is architectural: every layer in front of WordPress must preserve the requested hostname and send it to the same installation. A change that leaves the main domain working can still break newly created subsites.
For a fixed group of known sites, explicitly configured hostnames may be manageable. For a network where administrators or users create sites whenever needed, the wildcard DNS record, wildcard virtual host, Multisite rewrite rules, and certificate strategy should be treated as one system. Removing any one of those pieces turns a valid site address into a DNS error, wrong-site response, 404, or HTTPS warning.

Decision checklist
- Choose subdomains only if you need hostname-based URLs and control DNS and server routing.
- Choose subdirectories when wildcard DNS is unavailable or your host cannot route arbitrary subdomains.
- For subdomains, create
*.example.comat the authoritative DNS provider. - Route that wildcard to the same WordPress document root as the primary domain.
- Enable
WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE, select Sub-domains in Tools → Network Setup, and apply every generated rule. - Pass the random-hostname test before relying on on-demand site creation.
- Plan certificate coverage and SNI before publishing HTTPS subsites or mapped custom domains.
Bottom line
Wildcard subdomains are not a single WordPress switch. They are the combination of authoritative wildcard DNS, a wildcard-aware web server pointing to the WordPress root, Multisite’s subdomain configuration, working rewrite rules, and HTTPS coverage for the names you will serve. Build and test those layers in that order. If your host cannot provide them, a subdirectory network is the safer architecture.
