To connect to a Windows VPS with Remote Desktop, you need four things: a running, network-reachable VPS; Remote Desktop enabled on the Windows host; an account permitted to sign in remotely; and firewall rules that allow the configured RDP traffic. Collect the VPS public IP address or hostname and the supplied username and password, then connect with the Remote Desktop client for your device. Keep Network Level Authentication (NLA) enabled unless you are making a short-term compatibility repair.
What must be ready before an RDP connection can work
Remote Desktop is not a single switch. The connection succeeds only when the server, account, and network path are all configured correctly.

| Requirement | What to verify | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| VPS state | The virtual machine is powered on and has network connectivity. | Your hosting provider’s control panel or console |
| Windows host | Remote Desktop is enabled and the operating-system edition can accept incoming RDP sessions. | Windows Settings or Windows Server configuration |
| User account | The account is an administrator or is listed in Remote Desktop Users, and its password and status are valid. | Windows account and local or domain policy |
| Network controls | The provider firewall, cloud security group, and Windows Defender Firewall allow the configured RDP traffic. | Provider networking controls and Windows Firewall |
| Client | Your computer or mobile device has a current Remote Desktop client and an internet path to the VPS. | Windows, macOS, iOS/iPadOS, or Android device |
Microsoft recommends Network Level Authentication (NLA). NLA authenticates the user before Windows creates a remote session, reducing exposure from unauthenticated connection attempts. Microsoft describes it as adding “an extra layer of security to Remote Desktop connections.”
Collect the VPS address and credentials
Start with the information supplied by the VPS provider. You normally need:

- The public IPv4 address or public hostname of the VPS. Use the public address, not a private address shown inside the server.
- The Windows username, in exactly the format supplied by the provider or administrator.
- The initial password or other credential, unless the server uses a different sign-in method.
- The RDP port if the administrator changed it from the default.
Do not substitute your hosting account email for the Windows account unless the provider explicitly says they are the same. If a hostname and an IP address are both supplied, record both. The IP is useful for separating a DNS problem from an RDP problem later.
Enable Remote Desktop on the Windows VPS
Windows desktop editions
Sign in through the provider’s web console or another available administrative method. Open Settings > System > Remote Desktop, turn on Remote Desktop, and confirm the setting. Windows may ask you to confirm the change and show the computer name. Keep NLA enabled in the option that requires devices to use Network Level Authentication.
Windows Professional, Enterprise, and Education can host incoming Remote Desktop connections. Windows Server editions can also act as RDP hosts. Windows Home cannot host incoming Remote Desktop sessions, although a Home computer can be used as the client connecting to another Windows host. If the VPS is running Home, changing firewall rules will not make it an RDP host; the operating system must be changed or replaced.

Windows Server
On Windows Server, enable Remote Desktop through the server’s configuration tools or system settings, then apply the requested restart or policy changes. A server administrator can also verify that the Remote Desktop service is running and that the configured listener is present. If you cannot reach the graphical settings, use the provider’s console access to repair the configuration locally.

Permit the account to sign in remotely
An enabled RDP service does not automatically authorize every Windows user. The account must be an administrator or be added to the Remote Desktop Users group. Check that the account is not disabled, locked, expired, or restricted by a policy that denies remote sign-in.
Use the exact username format that the provider or administrator gave you. A local account and a domain account can require different formats, so do not add a domain prefix, computer-name prefix, or email suffix unless it is part of the documented credential. If the password was generated during VPS creation, copy it carefully; an extra space or a keyboard-layout difference can look like an invalid password.
When NLA is enabled, credentials are checked before a full desktop session is created. This is the preferred configuration. If an old client cannot negotiate NLA, disabling the requirement can be a temporary diagnostic measure, but it should be restored immediately after the client or server is corrected.

Provider firewall and cloud security group
Many VPS platforms place a firewall or security group outside Windows. Add an inbound rule for the VPS’s configured RDP port and restrict the source to trusted public IP addresses where possible. If your provider has separate controls for the virtual network and the individual VPS, check both. A rule in Windows cannot compensate for a provider-level rule that drops the traffic first.

Windows Defender Firewall
Windows normally creates Remote Desktop inbound rules when you enable the feature. Confirm that the rules for the active network profile are enabled. If you are repairing the server from a console, an administrator can enable the built-in rule group with PowerShell:
Enable-NetFirewallRule -DisplayGroup "Remote Desktop"
Use the command only after confirming that Remote Desktop is intended to be exposed and that the provider firewall is also restricted appropriately. If the administrator configured a non-default port, the Windows and provider rules must allow that port rather than assuming the default.
Does RDP require port 3389?
RDP uses TCP port 3389 by default, and current Windows clients commonly connect to that port when you enter only an address. Administrators may configure another port. In that case, enter the address and port in the client’s computer field in the form hostname:port or IP-address:port, and allow the same port through every intervening firewall. Changing a port is not a substitute for strong authentication and source-IP restrictions.

- Open the Start menu and search for Remote Desktop Connection.
- Launch the app and enter the VPS public hostname or IP address in the Computer field. Include
:portif the administrator supplied a non-default port. - Select Connect.
- When prompted, enter the Windows username and password supplied for the VPS. If the client offers to save credentials, save them only on a device you control and protect.
- Review any identity or certificate warning before accepting it. Verify that the address is the VPS you intended to reach and confirm the certificate context with the provider or administrator.
- After sign-in, wait for the Windows desktop to load. A successful desktop confirms that the network path, RDP listener, account authorization, and authentication method all worked together.
The first connection can display a certificate warning when the VPS hostname does not match a certificate trusted by your device. That warning is common on newly provisioned servers, but it is not permission to click through blindly. Stop and verify the address and certificate details if they do not match the information supplied by the administrator.

Connect from macOS, iPhone, iPad, or Android
Microsoft documents Windows App or the Remote Desktop client for macOS and iOS/iPadOS, and a Remote Desktop app for Android. Names and capabilities can change as Microsoft updates clients, so install the current client for your platform and follow its connection workflow.
| Device | Client path | Connection information |
|---|---|---|
| Windows PC | Remote Desktop Connection from Start search | Public hostname or IP, optional port, then Windows credentials |
| macOS | Windows App or the current Remote Desktop client | Add a PC or workspace using the VPS address and credentials |
| iPhone or iPad | Windows App or the current Remote Desktop client | Create a PC entry, supply the address and sign-in account, then connect |
| Android | Microsoft’s Remote Desktop app | Add a PC with the VPS address and the supplied Windows credentials |
Client features differ by platform and version. Depending on the client, connection settings can include multiple monitors, device or clipboard redirection, and single sign-on for Remote Desktop Services. Review each redirection option before enabling it: forwarding local drives, microphones, cameras, or clipboards increases convenience but also increases what the remote session can access. Browser-based access is dependent on the particular service and client deployment; it is not a universal property of every Windows VPS.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot a failed connection in the right order
Change one variable at a time. The sequence below moves from failures that prevent any network handshake to failures that occur after the server has recognized your account.
Immediate refusal or timeout
- Check the provider panel to confirm that the VPS is running and has not been suspended or stopped.
- Compare the address in the client with the current public IP or hostname. VPS addresses can change after reprovisioning or a networking change.
- Check the provider firewall and cloud security group for an inbound rule covering the configured RDP port and your current source IP.
- On the VPS console, verify that Remote Desktop is enabled and that the Windows Defender Firewall Remote Desktop inbound rules are active.
- If you are using a custom port, confirm that the client includes it and that every firewall uses the same port.
A timeout usually means that packets are being dropped or the host is unreachable. An immediate refusal can indicate that the address is reachable but no service is listening on that port. Both symptoms still require checking the VPS state and firewall layers before changing credentials.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.

The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
“Credentials did not work” or repeated password prompts
- Re-enter the username exactly as supplied, without adding a domain or computer prefix that was not documented.
- Reset or unlock the Windows account if it is expired, disabled, or locked.
- Confirm that the account is an administrator or a member of Remote Desktop Users.
- Check the keyboard layout and paste the password into a secure local field first if special characters may be changing.
- Verify that a local security policy or domain policy does not deny that account the right to log on through Remote Desktop Services.
NLA or sign-in error
An NLA error can result from an old client, an unreachable domain controller, an incorrect account, or a damaged server configuration. Use the provider’s local or console access to repair domain reachability and credentials. If you must disable NLA to regain access, treat that as a short-lived compatibility step: connect, update or replace the client, correct the underlying authentication issue, and re-enable NLA.
The hostname fails but the IP address works
This pattern points to DNS or hostname configuration rather than the RDP service itself. Use the verified public IP temporarily, then correct the hostname’s DNS record or the provider’s assigned name. Do not permanently rely on an IP if the VPS uses a changing address; update the record or obtain a stable address from the provider.
The address and credentials are correct, but the session still will not open
Use console access to verify the RDP listener and the Remote Desktop service. Check for an intervening office, VPN, or local firewall that blocks outbound RDP. Microsoft troubleshooting guidance also covers enabling the Remote Desktop firewall rule group with PowerShell. If the listener is absent or the service will not start, repair Windows locally before testing the external connection again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSecurity settings to apply after the first login
- Replace any provider-generated or temporary password with a strong, unique password and store it in a secure password manager.
- Keep NLA enabled and install current Windows security updates.
- Restrict the provider firewall and cloud security group to trusted source addresses or a VPN where feasible instead of allowing the entire internet.
- Permit only the RDP port and other services the VPS actually needs. Remove temporary troubleshooting rules after access is restored.
- Review Remote Desktop Users membership regularly and remove accounts that no longer need access.
- Use device redirection selectively. Disable drive, clipboard, camera, or microphone redirection when the session does not require it.
- Record the VPS address, custom port, account owner, and recovery-console method so another administrator can regain access without weakening the firewall.
Microsoft warns that enabling Remote Desktop opens a listening port. Treat the VPS as an internet-facing server: expose as little as practical, use strong credentials, and prefer trusted networks or a VPN for administration.
Client choices and session features
The best client is usually the current application for the device you already use. The underlying VPS configuration is the same, but the controls available for monitors, peripherals, and sign-in can differ.
| Decision point | What to expect | Practical choice |
|---|---|---|
| Operating-system support | Windows has the built-in Remote Desktop Connection app; macOS and iOS/iPadOS use Windows App or the current Remote Desktop client; Android uses Microsoft’s Remote Desktop app. | Use the client Microsoft currently documents for your device. |
| Credentials | All clients require the VPS address and an account authorized for remote sign-in; saved-credential behavior varies. | Save credentials only on a trusted, protected device. |
| Certificate handling | A first connection can show an identity warning when the VPS name is not covered by a trusted certificate. | Verify the address and certificate context before accepting. |
| Multiple monitors | Availability and controls depend on the client and version. | Enable only when the remote workload benefits from it. |
| Device redirection | Clients may offer clipboard, drive, audio, camera, or other redirection options. | Allow the minimum devices required for the task. |
| Single sign-on | Support depends on the Remote Desktop Services environment and client. | Use the provider’s documented account method rather than assuming SSO is available. |
| Browser access | Not every Windows VPS or client deployment includes a browser-based RDP gateway. | Use a native client unless the provider explicitly supplies a browser gateway. |
A repeatable recovery checklist
- Open the provider console and confirm the VPS is powered on and network-connected.
- Copy the current public IP or hostname and verify the RDP port.
- Confirm the Windows edition can host RDP and that Remote Desktop is enabled.
- Confirm the account is permitted for remote sign-in and that its password is valid.
- Check provider firewall, cloud security group, and Windows Defender Firewall rules in that order.
- Test from the native client using the address, optional port, and exact credentials.
- If the name fails, test the verified IP; if NLA fails, use console access for a temporary repair rather than leaving NLA disabled.
- After access returns, remove temporary rules, restore NLA, restrict source addresses, and document the working configuration.
This process isolates the four dependencies—host availability, Windows configuration, authorization, and network access—without weakening the server permanently.
