A maintained feed-control plugin is the least risky route: it can return a 404 or redirect feed requests to the matching HTML page. Removing the RSS icon or autodiscovery links from your theme is a separate task.

WordPress has more than one feed endpoint. The WordPress Developer Resources feeds handbook identifies RSS 2.0, RSS 0.92, RDF, and Atom feeds as feeds of recent site updates. A separate comments feed publishes comments rather than new posts. A site can therefore continue exposing content through another feed format or through a comments, category, archive, search, or per-post endpoint if you block only the main URL.
| Feed family | What it contains | Typical reason to retain or disable it |
|---|---|---|
| RSS 2.0 | Recent site content updates | Retain it for feed readers or disable it when the site does not publish through feeds. |
| RSS 0.92 | Recent site content updates in an older RSS format | Disable it when you want all legacy feed formats closed. |
| RDF | Recent site content updates | Include it in an all-feeds block; a single RSS 2.0 rule does not cover every format. |
| Atom | Recent site content updates | Include it in an all-feeds block unless an integration still needs Atom. |
| Comments feed | Comments published on the site | Keep it only when readers or a workflow intentionally consumes comment updates. |
The main post feed is commonly requested at /feed/. WordPress can also generate feeds for categories, archives, searches, individual posts, and comments. Exact URLs vary with permalink and feed settings, which is why testing more than one endpoint matters.
#1 Best Overall
Decide the scope before changing anything
Block every WordPress feed
Choose this when the site has no feed readers, syndication process, podcast or forum integration, or other service that relies on feed output. An all-feeds configuration should cover post feeds, comment feeds, and the alternate RSS, RDF, and Atom formats.
Keep the global post feed
A selective configuration can leave the main post feed available while disabling narrower feeds. This is useful when subscribers should receive normal site updates but should not receive separate category, archive, search, per-post comment, or similar feeds.
Keep global post and comment feeds
Some sites want a single post feed and one comments feed while closing every more-specific feed. Both Disable Feeds WP and Disable RSS, RDF, and Atom Feeds document controls for allowing global post and comment feeds while disabling narrower feeds.
Close only comments or only a narrow feed
Use a selective configuration rather than an all-or-nothing rule when a particular feed creates a privacy, moderation, or duplication concern. Confirm the plugin’s current options in WordPress.org before relying on a specific per-feed switch, because plugin interfaces change.
Choose a 404 or a redirect
| Response | What a feed request receives | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| 404 | The endpoint reports that the feed is unavailable. | Use this when the feed should be treated as intentionally absent and no alternative page is useful. |
| Redirect | The request is sent to the corresponding HTML content page. | Use this when a browser-friendly destination is preferable to an error response. |
Both documented feed-control plugins provide a redirect-versus-404 choice. A redirect does not preserve feed functionality: a feed reader receives an HTML destination instead of feed XML. A 404 clearly tells clients that the endpoint is no longer available. Pick one behavior deliberately, then test the actual HTTP result rather than judging only by what a browser displays.
Recommended no-code method: Disable Feeds WP
Check the plugin listing first
Plugin versions and tested WordPress versions are volatile. The Disable Feeds WP listing showed more than 10,000 active installations when accessed on October 15, 2026. Its changelog listed version 1.8 as tested with WordPress 7.0 in a 2026 listing. Treat those figures as a dated snapshot, not a guarantee for your installation: open the current WordPress.org page, review the latest update date, tested version, compatibility notices, and support activity before installing.
Install and open its settings
- Sign in to the WordPress administrator account.
- Open Plugins → Add New.
- Search for Disable Feeds WP, verify the author and current listing, and select Install Now.
- Select Activate after installation completes.
- Open Settings → Reading. The plugin adds its feed controls there.
Make a note of the existing feed behavior before changing settings. If the site has a newsletter, mobile app, analytics process, forum, or import job that reads a feed, identify that dependency first. A feed block can look like a broken site to an external service even when normal pages continue working.
Configure the response
In the plugin’s Reading settings, choose whether blocked requests should redirect to the corresponding HTML content or return a 404. Then choose the scope controls that match your decision:
- For a complete shutdown, disable global post and comment feeds and the narrower feed types exposed by the plugin.
- For a main-post-feed-only setup, allow the global post feed and disable category, archive, search, per-post, and other narrower feeds shown in the settings.
- For global posts plus global comments, allow both global feeds and disable the narrower comment and archive variants.
Save the settings, then test before announcing the change. If a required integration stops receiving updates, return to the same screen and restore only the feed it needs rather than reopening every feed.
Alternative for bbPress or different selective-feed needs
Disable RSS, RDF, and Atom Feeds documents the same fundamental choices: redirect blocked requests or return a 404, and optionally keep global post and comment feeds while disabling more-specific feeds. Its documentation also covers integration with bbPress forum, topic, and reply feeds. That integration makes it the more relevant option when a WordPress site uses bbPress and you need to decide separately what happens to forum-related feeds.
- From Plugins → Add New, search for the exact plugin name.
- Check the current WordPress.org listing, author, update history, and compatibility information.
- Install and activate it.
- Open its settings and select the redirect or 404 behavior.
- Review the controls for global posts, global comments, and bbPress forum, topic, and reply feeds.
- Save, then test a normal post feed and each forum feed that your site exposes.
Do not run two feed-blocking plugins at the same time while diagnosing behavior. Two plugins can apply different responses to the same request, making it unclear which setting is active. Deactivate the first plugin before evaluating the alternative.
A lightweight all-feeds option
Disable RSS Feeds – Lite & Clean blocks RSS, RSS2, Atom, and RDF feeds. Its documented limitation is important: it does not currently provide a selective keep-list. Choose it only when an all-feeds block is acceptable and you do not need to preserve a global post or comment feed. Check its current WordPress.org listing before installation because availability, compatibility, and maintenance status can change.
Removing RSS links from your theme is a separate job
Blocking feed endpoints does not automatically remove every visible RSS link. Disable Feeds WP states that its endpoint handling does not control links generated by the theme. A theme, widget, menu, or template can continue to display an RSS icon even after requests to the feed return a 404 or redirect.
Remove a classic RSS widget icon
The WordPress Developer Resources hook reference documents this filter for removing the icon link generated by the classic RSS widget:
Rank #3
add_filter( 'rss_widget_feed_link', '__return_empty_string' );
Add the code in a child theme’s functions.php file or through a site-specific code-management method that survives parent-theme updates. Do not edit a parent theme directly if you expect to update that theme; an update can overwrite the change. After adding the filter, remove any separate RSS block, navigation item, footer link, or custom template link that your theme adds independently.
Check the page source, not just the visible page
Browsers and feed readers can discover feeds through HTML <link> elements in the document head. View the source of the home page and representative posts, then search for rss, atom, and alternate. If those elements remain, identify whether they come from the theme, a widget, or another plugin and remove them at that layer. Hiding an icon with CSS does not remove the underlying link or feed discovery metadata.
How to disable only category, archive, search, or comment feeds
Selective blocking is useful when the main feed is part of your publishing workflow but narrower feeds are unnecessary. Configure it in this order:
- Decide which global feeds must remain: normal posts, comments, or both.
- Enable those global feeds in the plugin’s keep or allow controls.
- Disable category and archive feeds if you do not want a separate feed for each taxonomy or date view.
- Disable search feeds if search-result URLs should not produce feed output.
- Disable per-post comment feeds when comments should not be distributed individually.
- If bbPress is installed, decide separately whether forum, topic, and reply feeds remain available.
- Save the settings and test every retained feed as well as every blocked class.
Do not infer that disabling a category link in a menu disables the category feed. Navigation and endpoint behavior are independent. Likewise, removing an RSS icon does not stop a client that already knows the feed URL.

Verification checklist after saving
This checklist is designed to catch incomplete blocks and accidental loss of an intentionally retained feed:
- Request the main post feed at the site’s
/feed/URL. - Request a category or archive feed that exists on the site.
- Request a comment feed, including a per-post comment feed if comments are enabled.
- If the site uses bbPress, request a forum, topic, and reply feed.
- Confirm that each blocked endpoint returns the response you selected: a redirect to the corresponding HTML page or a 404.
- Confirm that every intentionally retained global post or comment feed still returns feed content rather than an HTML page or error.
- View page source and check for RSS or Atom
<link>elements. - Inspect the theme’s widgets, menus, footer, and templates for visible RSS links that remain.
Use a browser for a quick check, but verify the status behavior with an HTTP inspection tool or browser developer tools. A redirect can look like a successful page load while still proving that no feed XML is being served.

The RSS icon is still visible
The plugin controls feed requests, not theme-generated links. Remove the related widget or template link, and use the documented rss_widget_feed_link filter for the classic RSS widget. Recheck both the rendered page and its source because a theme can expose a link in the head without showing an icon.

/feed/ is blocked but another feed still works
WordPress supports multiple formats and feed scopes. Review the plugin’s controls for RSS 2.0, RSS 0.92, RDF, Atom, comments, categories, archives, searches, and per-post feeds. Test the exact URL that remains available; blocking one pattern does not prove that every feed family is closed.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A feed reader reports an error after the change
First determine whether that reader needs the feed. If it is an intentional dependency, restore only the required global or narrow feed. If the feed should remain disabled, the error is the expected result; communicate the replacement HTML page or another approved update channel to that reader’s users.
A redirect produces an ordinary web page
That is the documented purpose of the redirect option. It preserves a useful destination for browsers but does not provide machine-readable feed data. Select a 404 instead if clients must clearly recognize that the feed endpoint is unavailable.
bbPress feeds behave differently from post feeds
Forum, topic, and reply feeds are separate from ordinary post feeds. Use a plugin with documented bbPress integration, review its forum-specific controls, and test each type after saving. Do not assume that a global post-feed setting covers forum content.
The setting appears correct but old output remains
Repeat the test in a private browser window and inspect the actual response. If a proxy or page cache sits in front of WordPress, purge or bypass that cache according to its normal procedure, then test again. Also confirm that only one feed-control plugin is active.

When custom code is appropriate
Use a plugin when you need maintained handling for multiple feed formats, selective scopes, redirect-versus-404 behavior, or bbPress. Custom code is most useful for theme-level cleanup, such as removing a widget icon with the documented filter. A bespoke endpoint-blocking implementation must account for every feed type and request scope; an incomplete rule can leave RSS, RDF, Atom, or comment feeds available. If you write custom endpoint logic, test it against the full verification checklist and keep it in a child theme or site-specific code layer rather than a parent theme.
Safely reversing the change
If you need to restore feeds, record the current plugin settings first, then deactivate the feed-blocking plugin and test the same URLs. Restore any theme filter or widget change separately. Recheck the page source for autodiscovery links and confirm that the feed reader or integration that prompted the rollback receives valid feed content. If you only need one feed back, prefer a selective allow setting over removing the entire block.
Which approach fits your site?
| Approach | Endpoint scope | Response choices | Theme-link cleanup | bbPress support |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Disable Feeds WP | All feeds or selective global and narrow feeds | Redirect or 404 | Separate theme or widget work required | Not documented as its defining integration |
| Disable RSS, RDF, and Atom Feeds | Global and narrower feeds, with bbPress-specific controls documented | Redirect or 404 | Separate theme or widget work required | Forum, topic, and reply feeds documented |
| Disable RSS Feeds – Lite & Clean | All RSS, RSS2, Atom, and RDF feeds | All-feeds blocking | Separate theme or widget work required | No selective keep-list documented |
| Theme filter | Visible RSS widget link only | Removes the classic widget icon link | Code change is the method | Does not disable endpoints |
For most site owners, start with Disable Feeds WP, select the narrowest scope that meets your goal, and decide explicitly between a redirect and a 404. Use the bbPress-focused alternative when forum feeds need their own policy. Use the lightweight option only when every listed feed format can be closed. Whichever method you choose, remove theme links separately and verify both the HTTP response and the page source.
