How to Connect Two or More Nintendo Switch Consoles for Local Wireless Play

Start a supported game’s local multiplayer mode on each console, have one player host, and let the others join. Player limits and game-copy rules vary by title.

To play locally, start a game that supports local wireless on each Nintendo Switch, open that game’s local multiplayer mode, and have one player create a room or host a session. The other players then join the host’s room or session. Menu names, player limits, and whether each person needs a game copy depend on the title, so check its Nintendo Support guide before you start.

How do you connect Switch consoles for local wireless play?

  1. Check the game’s requirements. Confirm that the exact game and edition supports local wireless, then check its player limit and game-copy requirements.
  2. Start the game on each console. Use the game or compatible guest software specified by its instructions.
  3. Have one player host. On that console, open the game’s local multiplayer menu—often called Local Play, Local Wireless, or Wireless Play—and choose the option to create a room or session.
  4. Have the others join. On each other console, open the same local mode and choose its join or search option. Select the host’s room when it appears.
  5. Start the game. Once the expected players have joined, the host confirms or starts the session if the game requires it.

This is a general pattern, not a universal sequence: each game supplies its own menus and joining process. For example, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has players create a room and select the host’s name; in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the host opens the gate at the Airport through Orville.

Does everyone need a copy of the game?

It depends on the game and mode. Do not assume that one copy can be shared across all consoles: some games require a copy for every player, while others offer a guest route with specific conditions.

How many players can join?

Limits are game- and mode-specific. Check both the total player limit and any limit on how many people can use each console. For example, Nintendo’s Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Wireless Play guide describes two to eight players, with up to two players per console in that wireless mode. Do not apply that limit to other games or to LAN Play.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

Which connection mode should you choose?

Mode What it means What to check
Local wireless Nearby consoles connect through a game’s local multiplayer mode. Whether the title supports it, its joining steps, player limit, and game-copy requirements.
LAN Play A separate wired local-network mode offered by certain games. The game’s hardware and network requirements. Nintendo Switch Sports has dedicated LAN instructions and lists a USB LAN adapter for Switch Lite use.
Online play Players connect over the internet rather than using local wireless. The game’s online requirements; a Nintendo Switch Online membership may be required depending on the title.
GameShare A Nintendo Switch 2 feature for compatible software, with its own setup and supported modes. A Switch 2 must host. Switch and Switch 2 consoles can join locally when the software supports it, and Nintendo says participating consoles need the latest system update.

These modes are not interchangeable. In particular, LAN Play is not another name for local wireless, and online play is not local play. Use the mode named in the game’s own instructions.

Why can’t my Switch find the other console?

Start with the game’s session setup rather than assuming a system-wide connection problem. Nintendo’s game guides show that creating a room, opening an island gate, or creating a lobby may be required before other players can join.

Nintendo Switch with Neon Blue and Neon Red Joy-Con - Handheld Gaming Console
  • 6.2” LCD screen
  • Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
  • Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
  • Detachable Joy-Con controllers
  • Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
  • Confirm that every player opened the same local multiplayer mode in the correct game and edition.
  • Check that the host actually created the room or opened the session.
  • Verify the title’s player limit, per-console limit, and software or game-copy requirements.
  • Follow any game-specific joining instructions; some titles use a lobby list, while others use an in-game place or host name.

Nintendo’s support pages do not establish one troubleshooting sequence that applies to every local wireless game. For GameShare specifically, Nintendo requires all participating consoles to have the latest system update installed; that requirement should not be assumed for every local wireless title.
